Depicting Fat Bodies: Wimmelbook Logic and Fat Temporality in Kristin Roskifte’s Everybody Counts In this article we analyze how fat bodies are written into Kristin Roskifte’s picturebook Alle sammen teller ('Everybody counts', 2018). The book strives to depict a diversity of bodies and unlike contemporary Nordic picturebooks in general, fat bodies are included. Alle sammen teller is a wimmelbook built around the concept of counting people and the book’s form is central to our analysis. The wimmelbook structure entails a reading act where linearity and chronology are broken, creating particular effects in relation to the depiction of fat bodies. Introducing the queer theoretical concept fat temporality in Swedish children’s book research, we analyze how manifestations of fat express temporality in Roskifte’s picturebook. The analysis shows that fat bodies within the wimmelbook logic encompass fat temporality which in turn serves a body positivistic purpose. The book thus goes against traditional notions of fat and time, resulting in a multifaceted depic-tion of fat bodies. However, the stigma of fat prevails in the thin normativity expressed in the depictions of children’s bodies.

This paper described the interconnection model of morals-reasoning-research in the curriculum of Tarbiyatul Muallimien al-Islamiyah (known as TMI) Al-Amien Prenduan. It also examined the supporting and inhibiting factors for the implementation of the interconnected-curriculum. It is a case study employing observation, interviews and documentation, and the data were analyzed using qualitative analysis. Two conclusions were drawn. First, TMI uses multidisciplinary approaches in its curriculum by interconnecting morals, reason and research. Morals are instilled through reading and learning the morals books such as Ta‘lîm al-Muta‘allim and Iḥyâ’ ‘Ulûm al-Dîn. The reasoning skills are taught through school subjects such as logic, Islamic jurisprudence and the science of hadith. In contrast, the research skills are taught through research subjects and a compulsory program called writing a research paper. Second, the class classification model, which takes students’ talent and interest into account, and other research-related programs such as book review and fatḥ al-kutub (classical book research) are the supporting factors for the writing program. They are accommodating for students in completing their writing. Meanwhile, there are also numbers of inhibiting factors such as student’s lacking motivation, the prohibition of internet use, unsuitable supervisor expertise, and the minimum role of Islamic Study Center (Pusdilam).

Adolescents on Music foregrounds the voices of 30 American adolescent musicians, ages 12–18. Adolescent singer-songwriters, studio and solo musicians, rappers, composers and arrangers, and band, choir, and orchestra members tell about their musical development and what it is like to make music by themselves and others. Situated in these 30 adolescents’ experiences is a theory of adolescent musical development—a theory that will help music educators support adolescents in their lives. The book is structured in three parts: Part I focuses on “who I am” with an in-depth look at musical identities; Part II explores “the social self” by investigating adolescent experiences of belonging, community, and social identity; Part III looks toward “a future vision” focusing on adolescent perspectives on their future and their advice for music educators. In the last chapter, Parker proposes one philosophy of adolescent music-making. Throughout the book, research from the arts, social and natural sciences, humanities, and education dimensionalize adolescent perspectives. Special features of this book include “Step Back” locations, reflective spaces for the reader to draw connections with adolescents’ experience and their own experiences. At the end of each chapter, the “Wrap Up” allows additional spaces for topics, questions, and possibilities for effective teaching interactions. Between each chapter are “Interludes” written by one or more of the 30 adolescent contributors.
