Allowable Cracks Related to Penetration for Part-Through Cracks in Pipes Subjected to Bending Stresses

Fully plastic collapse stresses for circumferentially part-through cracked pipes subjected to bending stresses are estimated by Limit Load Criteria provided by the ASME Code Section XI. Allowable crack depths were determined by using the Limit Load Criteria and that are tabulated in the ASME Code Section XI for different plant service level conditions. On the other hand, crack penetration bending stresses for part-through cracked pipes were estimated by using the Local Approach of Limit Load Criteria. By using these Criteria, the study presented in this paper obtained allowable crack depths at penetration for circumferentially part-through cracked pipes. Comparing the allowable crack depths obtained by both methods for each service level, it is evident that the allowable crack depths at penetration calculated by the Local Approach of Limit Load Criteria are almost always smaller than those at fully plastic collapse stresses calculated by the Limit Load Criteria. It was found that the allowable crack depths provided by the ASME Code Section XI are less conservative for crack penetrations.

Case Report: Vasculitis Triggered by SIRT in a Patient With Previously Untreated Cholangiocarcinoma

Arising from the biliary tract, cholangiocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive epithelial cancer. According to the primary site, it can be further classified into intrahepatic, perihilar and distal types. Due to the lack of symptoms early in the disease course, most patients are diagnosed at advanced stages. Being not candidates for curative surgical management, these patients are treated with palliative systemic chemotherapy, and their prognosis remains poor. Using radioisotopes like yttrium-90 -labeled microspheres (90Y), radioembolization represents a local approach to treat primary and secondary liver tumors. In the case of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, radioembolization can be used as a primary treatment, as an adjunct to chemotherapy or after failing chemotherapy. An 88-year-old man underwent radioembolization for a previously untreated stage II intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. One week later, he presented to our clinic with a non-pruritic maculopapular rash of the lower extremities and abdomen, worsening fatigue and low-grade fever. Laboratory exams, including hepatitis screening, were within normal limits. Showing positive immunofluorescence staining for immunoglobulin M (IgM) and complement 3 (C3) in vessel walls without IgA involvement, the skin biopsy results were compatible with leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Apart from the anticancer intervention, there have been no recent medication changes which could explain this complication. Notably, we did not observe any side effects during or after the perfusion scan with technetium-99m macroaggregated albumin (MAA) performed prior to radioembolization. The symptoms resolved quickly after a short course of colchicine and did not reappear at cholangiocarcinoma progression. In the absence of other evident causes, we conclude that the onset of leukocytoclastic vasculitis in our patient was directly linked to the administration of yttrium-90 -labeled microspheres. Our report therefore demonstrates that this condition can be a rare but manageable complication of 90Y liver radioembolization.

Local Brain-Age: A U-Net Model

We propose a new framework for estimating neuroimaging-derived “brain-age” at a local level within the brain, using deep learning. The local approach, contrary to existing global methods, provides spatial information on anatomical patterns of brain ageing. We trained a U-Net model using brain MRI scans from n = 3,463 healthy people (aged 18–90 years) to produce individualised 3D maps of brain-predicted age. When testing on n = 692 healthy people, we found a median (across participant) mean absolute error (within participant) of 9.5 years. Performance was more accurate (MAE around 7 years) in the prefrontal cortex and periventricular areas. We also introduce a new voxelwise method to reduce the age-bias when predicting local brain-age “gaps.” To validate local brain-age predictions, we tested the model in people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia using data from OASIS3 (n = 267). Different local brain-age patterns were evident between healthy controls and people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, particularly in subcortical regions such as the accumbens, putamen, pallidum, hippocampus, and amygdala. Comparing groups based on mean local brain-age over regions-of-interest resulted in large effects sizes, with Cohen's d values >1.5, for example when comparing people with stable and progressive mild cognitive impairment. Our local brain-age framework has the potential to provide spatial information leading to a more mechanistic understanding of individual differences in patterns of brain ageing in health and disease.

Selecting Milk Spectra to Develop Equations to Predict Milk Technological Traits

Including all available data when developing equations to relate midinfrared spectra to a phenotype may be suboptimal for poorly represented spectra. Here, an alternative local changepoint approach was developed to predict six milk technological traits from midinfrared spectra. Neighbours were objectively identified for each predictand as those most similar to the predictand using the Mahalanobis distances between the spectral principal components, and subsequently used in partial least square regression (PLSR) analyses. The performance of the local changepoint approach was compared to that of PLSR using all spectra (global PLSR) and another LOCAL approach, whereby a fixed number of neighbours was used in the prediction according to the correlation between the predictand and the available spectra. Global PLSR had the lowest RMSEV for five traits. The local changepoint approach had the lowest RMSEV for one trait; however, it outperformed the LOCAL approach for four traits. When the 5% of the spectra with the greatest Mahalanobis distance from the centre of the global principal component space were analysed, the local changepoint approach outperformed the global PLSR and the LOCAL approach in two and five traits, respectively. The objective selection of neighbours improved the prediction performance compared to utilising a fixed number of neighbours; however, it generally did not outperform the global PLSR.

Local Approach of Ductile Rupture Under Cyclic Loading Conditions

Experiments have shown that ductile failure occurs sooner under cyclic loading conditions than under monotone ones. This reduction of ductility probably arises from an effect called "ratcheting of the porosity" that consists of a continued increase of the mean porosity during each cycle with the number of cycles. Improved micromechanical simulations confirmed this interpretation. The same work also contained a proof that Gurson's classical model for porous ductile materials does not predict any ratcheting of the porosity. In a recent work [6], the authors proposed a Gurson-type "layer model" better fit than Gurson's original one for the description of the ductile behavior under cyclic loading conditions, using the theory of sequential limit analysis. A very good agreement was obtained between the model predictions and the results of the micromechanical simulations for a rigid-hardenable material. However, the ratcheting of the porosity is a consequence of both hardening and elasticity, and sequential limit analysis [14, 15] is strictly applicable in the absence of elasticity. In this work, a proposal is made to take into account elasticity in the layer model through the definition of a new objective stress rate leading to an accurate expression of the porosity rate accounting for both elasticity and plasticity. This proposal is assessed through comparison of its predictions with the results of some new micromechanical simulations performed for matrices exhibiting both elasticity and all types of hardening. Finally, a comparison of the predictions regarding finite element modeling of pipes loaded cyclically is proposed.

The Relationship Between Shape Perception Accuracy and Drawing Ability.

Accurate shape perception is critical for object perception, identification, manipulation, and recreation. Humans are capable of making judgements of both objective (physical) and projective (retinal) shape. Objective judgements benefit from a global approach by incorporating context to overcome the effects of viewing angle on an object’s shape, whereas projective judgements benefit from a local approach to filter out contextual information. Realistic drawing skill requires projective judgements of 3D targets to accurately depict 3D shape on a 2D surface, thus benefiting from a local approach. The current study used a shape perception task that comprehensively tests the effects of context on shape perception, in conjunction with a drawing task and several measures of local processing bias, to show that the perceptual basis of drawing skill in neurotypical adults is not due to a local processing bias but to perceptual flexibility, the ability to process local or global information as needed.

Transcultural brand communication: Disneyland’s social media posts from USA to Hong Kong and Shanghai

The paper attends to the increasingly heated debate on the local, the global versus the glocal approaches in transcultural brand communication with an examination of how Disneyland performs emotional branding on social media across US to Hong Kong and Shanghai. Integrating insights from brand communication with linguistics, the present study develops a framework to examine how Disneyland builds emotional attachment of the public to the brand via brand personality appeals and use of interactional features. It is found that on a global-local continuum, brand personality traits exhibit strong globalization propensity whereas interactional features demonstrate strong localization tendency in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Variations also exist in the means of emotional branding between Hong Kong and Shanghai. Finally, the paper provides an account for the differences between Hong Kong and Shanghai and concludes that neither the local approach nor the global approach but the glocal approach can tackle the challenge of transcultural brand communication and that future studies in this area should be oriented further to uncovering the global-local nexus in the process.
