Malcolm X : Pengaruh dan Konflik Internal dalam Gerakan Nation of Islam (NOI) di Amerika Serikat (1952-1965)

This research aim to analyze the influence of Malcom X in the movement of NOI, and how it ignite internal conflict within this organization. The analyze focused on library research by using history research method. History research method requires certain procedures for instance heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography. As a result, there are three significant factors that triggered the violence againt Malcolm X performed by NOI perpetrators. The first factor was assumed on the popularity of Malcolm X whom gained more attention than Elijah Muhammad did. The consequences of Malcolm X’s fame initiated the jelaousy toward him. As a result there was rumour produced by Elijah Muhammad followers on the agenda of coup d’etat against the leadership of the legal chief of NOI. The next cause of the internal conflict within NOI was the scandal of Elijah Muhammad with his female secretary. The last factor was the Malcolm X opinion on mass media toward the homicide of President Kennedy. Keywords : Influence, Internal Conflict, Malcolm X, NOI. Abstrak: Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk menjelaskan pengaruh Malcolm X dan konflik internal dalam gerakan NOI. Penelitian ini dipusatkan pada kajian pustaka dengan menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah. Langkah yang dilakukan peneliti yaitu heuristik, kritik sumber, interpretasi dan historiografi. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah setidaknya ada tiga faktor utama yang menyebabkan konflik Malcolm X dari NOI. Pertama, Malcolm X lebih terkenal dan menjadi tokoh besar dalam gerakan NOI daripada Elijah Muhammad. Ketenarannya merangsang rasa iri dan rumor bahwa dia akan mengambil alih gerakan serta dia ingin lebih berhasil dari Elijah Muhammad. Kedua, kehidupan pribadi Elijah Muhammad yang terguncang oleh skandal perempuan. Ressignificando as raças: os deuses pretos e os demônios brancos no discurso nacionalista preto da Nação do Islã nos Estados Unidos da América

O presente artigo faz uma análise dos textos sagrados da Nação do Islã, que buscou reformular os sentidos das relações inter-raciais. Discutirei como as representações acerca do marcador social da diferença raça foram ressignificados pelo discurso de Elijah Muhammad, visando a uma reestruturação da situação social da população preta dos Estados Unidos da América.

Kebijakan Elijah Muhammad pada Gerakan Nation of Islam (NoI) dalam Memperjuangkan Etnis Afro-Amerika di Amerika Serikat

The US people had discriminated Afro-Americans in various spheres. In the midst of the discrimination as well as the racism experienced by the blacks, a mysterious merchant called Fard emerged in 1930. As a form of existence and resistance toward the wide-spread discrimination and racism as well as to raise the voice of the citizens who did not get their rights and justice, he founded the Nation of Islam (NOI). One of Fard's disciples, Elijah Muhammad, then led and developed NOI in 1934-1975. The purpose of this research is to explain Elijah Muhammad's struggle in dignifying the Afro-American ethnic and his influence in the NOI movement. Focusing on literary research, the method used in this research is historical analysis, while the activities carried out in the analysis include topic selection, heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results obtained from this research are descriptions of Elijah Muhammad's policies in uplifting the identity of the Afro-American ethnic. In this case, Elijah Muhammad at least took two measures in the movement that he led, namely recovering the Black identity to be respectfully recognized and developing economic independence.

The Royal Family

This chapter examines the complicated Royal Family, Elijah and Clara Muhammad and their daughters, Ethel Sharrieff and Lottie Muhammad. By the 1960s the Nation of Islam had blossomed into a financially rich organization with an expansive membership. Elijah Muhammad secretaries were central to the organizations communication efforts. Some of the secretaries, Evelyn Williams, Lucile Rosary and Tynnetta Deanar, for example, were also the secret wives of Elijah Muhammad. The tensions produced by these relationships and Minister Malcolm X’s role in exposing Elijah Muhammad’s personal life beyond the membership signal the difficulties in maintaining a patriarchal movement. How polygamy impacted rank and file women, and Mrs. Clara Muhammad, conclude the chapter.

Flexing a New Womanhood

This chapter details the Muslim Girls Training and General Civilization Class (MGT-GCC) instruction for women. The role of Sister Captain Burnsteen Sharrieff is highlighted along with Lottie and Ethel Muhammad, the daughters of Clara and Elijah Muhammad. Sister Thelma X, a vocal member of the Nation of Islam and her publication, Truth, are examined for both its pro-black and anti-Jewish rhetoric. Sisters Louise Dunlap and Ernestine Scott, two Nation women who defied Jim Crow laws by sitting in a “White Only” section of a railroad station, bring Minister Malcolm X and his future wife, Sister Betty X into the narrative.

The Promise of Patriarchy

The patriarchal structure of the Nation of Islam (NOI) promised black women the prospect of finding a provider and a protector among the organization’s men, who were fiercely committed to these masculine roles. Black women’s experience in the NOI, however, has largely remained on the periphery of scholarship. This book documents their struggle to escape the devaluation of black womanhood while also clinging to the empowering promises of patriarchy. The author shows how, despite being relegated to a lifestyle that did not encourage working outside of the home, NOI women found freedom in being able to bypass the degrading experiences connected to labor performed largely by working-class black women and in raising and educating their children in racially affirming environments. Telling the stories of women like Clara Poole (wife of Elijah Muhammad) and Burnsteen Sharrieff (secretary to W. D. Fard, founder of the Allah Temple of Islam), the author offers a compelling narrative that explains how their decision to join a homegrown, male-controlled Islamic movement was a complicated act of self-preservation and self-love in Jim Crow America.

The method that used is hirostical method that divided into four steps, those are: heuristics, critique, interpretation and historiography as the tools to collecting data the researcher doing the study techniques with literature review that are relevant to the theme of this research. Based on the results of the study can be explained that Malcolm X or Ell-Haj Malik Ell-Shabbazz is the civil right struggle of blackcs who are quite notable, beside from being a struggler from the black civil rights, he also transformed as an Islamic figure of USA. So many ways that was struggled by Malcolm X to get the civil right of blacks, those are: created the relationship with another leader in the other country such as Kasem Gulick the leader of the Turkish parliament, and make the organization African American unity, attended in Asian African Conferenced in Bandung, make the Malcolm X Foundation. The struggles by Malcolm X are influenced from some prominent figure such as W.E.B Du Bois and Elijah Muhammad. The life of blacks is being well after struggling the civil right that was achieved by Malcolm X, the life of blacks began to rise after the struggles of the civil right by Malcolm X, the level of blacks began to increase, the various employment be able for blacks, the social facilities are not be differentianted, and the rights of election strated evenness.
