Discovery of a new population of Rhithrogena delphinensis Sowa & Degrange, 1987, in the Arves Massif, and additions to the morphological description of the larva (Ephemeroptera, Heptageniidae). Rhithrogena delphinensis, described originally on the basis of four larvae from the Western Alps, south of the Arves Massif and from the northern flank of the Ecrins Massif, had not been captured again since 1986. Here, we report the discovery of a new population from river Arvan, whose drainage basin is located between the Grandes Rousses Massif and the northern flank of the Arves Massif. This newly discovered population seems abundant in numbers, and reveals the particular ecological requirements of the species as well as its dependence on glacier fed or nival streams. The morphological characteristics of the larvae are described in detail, and illustrated by photographs. The variability of some of the proposed identification criteria is discussed, and a key to the identification of the Rhithrogena species from the alpestris group of the Western Alps, to which R. delphinensis belongs, is provided. Finally, a portion of 658 base pairs of the COI gene of R. delphinensis is sequenced for the first time and compared to already existing data on the alpestris group in the Western Alps.

Background. Some papers describing the deposits and prospects in the Baimka ore zone (Baimka Trend), the Chukotka Autonomous Region have been recently published. It should be noted that those publications concern with the large Peschanka porphyry copper-molybdenum-gold deposit and Nakhodka ore field. At the same time, some copper prospects were found at the zone flanks and their nature is not clear. There are no data available in the literature that would clarify the mineralogy of hydrothermal alteration and ores at those prospects, including Top and Luchik located at the northern flank. To understand the nature of these prospects, we studied in depth mineralogy of hydrothermal alteration and ores.Aim. This study aims to describe mineralogy of metasomatic rocks and ores from the Top and Luchik prospects in the northern part of the Baimka zone, Western Chukotka.Materials and methods. Several dozen polished thin sections were microscopic studied at the Department of Mineralogy of Moscow State University using an optical microscope. The chemical composition of minerals was determined using electron microprobe at the Laboratory of Analytical Techniques of High Spatial Resolution, Department of Petrology and Volcanology, Moscow State University.Results. It was found that propylitic is the major hydrothermal alteration at the prospects studied here. Metasomatic rocks are cut by mineralized quartz and carbonate-quartz veins. Chalcopyrite and pyrite are the major ore minerals; galena, sphalerite, pyrite enriched in As and Sb, and marcasite are minor; Hg-bearing tetrahedrite-(Zn), native gold with the fineness of ~830, petzite, hessite, and acanthite are rare.Conclusions. The data obtained suggest that mineralization at the Top and Luchik prospect is attributed to the epithermal intermediate sulfidation type. Considering the occurrence of the epithermal mineralization in the upper part of the hydrothermal column and the porphyry mineralization in the Baimka zone, the porphyry mineralization is possible at depth at the Top and Luchik prospects.

Detailed structural and stratigraphic field mapping is used to reconstruct the Jurassic to Late Cretaceous diapiric and tectonic evolution of the Toulon Fault Zone, eastern Beausset Syncline and Toulon Belt, southern France, which represents the easternmost vestige of the Pyrenean orogen in Provence. This complex salt-rich area records a complete history from Jurassic-early Cretaceous subsidence and Aptian-Albian oblique rifting to Late Cretaceous Pyrenean-Provençal shortening. Halokinetic sequences and geometries were preserved principally on the northern flank of the Mont Caume salt diapir sourced from the Upper Triassic Keuper unit. Our field observations are best explained by a model where halokinetic activity interacted with regional deviatoric stresses from early-Jurassic to Santonian/Campanian times. Halokinetic wedges of Jurassic and Early Cretaceous carbonates thin toward the diapir, recording early salt mobilisation. Inverted relics of Apto-Albian rift depocenters are aligned along the northern margin of the Toulon Belt and the adjacent Bandol belt that lies to the west. The Turonian-Coniacian Revest depocenter developed due to localized strong asymmetrical growth of the Mont Caume diapir. The three-dimensional form and growth of the diapir controlled lateral migration of the Revest depocenter, thickness variations, progressive unconformities, and the westward increase in stratal overturning of a flap. A component of N-S compression with related accelerated halokinetic activity can explain our observations and can be considered as the earliest expression of N-S convergence in the Provencal fold belt. Further west, the overturned Beausset klippe can be interpreted as the remnant of a megaflap on the northern flank of the Bandol diapir. The Toulon belt salt structures are excellent field analogues to others observed in the external Alps and Pyrenees.

Abstract Soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) were identified in proglacial lacustrine (glaciolacustrine) sediments dated to 25–24 ka in the Buivydžiai outcrop, situated 30 km north of Vilnius in east Lithuania. These sediments accumulated in front of the last Weichselian glaciation maximum. The SSDS originated due to sandy silt liquefaction that disrupted the decimeter-thick silty sand interlayer. A NW-SE trending Buivydžiai fault was mapped in the proximity (8 km) of the Buivydžiai outcrop. The fault is well traced by a dense drilling in the sediments of the preglacial Daumantai Formation in the basal part of the Quaternary cover and attributed to the earliest Pleistocene. Depth difference of the formation along the fault is ~5–8 m; the northern flank is relatively uplifted with respect to the southern flank. The Buivydžiai earthquake was most likely induced by formation of an elastic forebulge flexure of the Earth's crust in front of the ice sheet. The magnitude was evaluated ~M = 6.0–6.5 and was most likely of shallow hypocenter depth. Furthermore, the Bystritsa (Belarus) earthquake of magnitude M = 3.5–4.0 was registered in December 1908 to the east (12 km) of the Buivydžiai outcrop along the Buivydžiai fault, which points to recurrent seismic activity of this fault.

The northern flank of the North China Craton (NCC) hosts a linear zone of gold, molybdenum, silver, lead, and zinc polymetallic ore deposits. Among these, the Yingfang Pb-Zn-Ag deposit is located in the central part of the Yanshan–Liaoxi metallogenic belt (YLMB) which extends for approximately 1000 km and forms part of the major mineralized zone. In this study, we characterize the mineralization and trace the ore genesis based on new sulfur and lead isotopic geochemistry and evaluate the timing of mineralization from Rb-Sr isotope dating of sulfides. The pyrite δ34S values range from +3.2‰ to +5.8‰ with a mean at +4.07‰, close to the values of mantle and meteorite sulfur. The 206Pb/204Pb values range from 16.833 to 18.956, 207Pb/204Pb from 15.374 to 15.522, and 208Pb/204Pb from 37.448 to 37.928. Five samples of sulfide, from the Yingfang deposit, yield a Rb-Sr isochron age of 135.7 ± 4.1 Ma. This age is close to the age of the adjacent Niujuan Ag-Au deposit and the associated Er’daogou granite, suggesting a close relationship between magmatism and metallogeny in this region. The S and Pb isotopes of the regional silver polymetallic deposits show similar sources of ore-forming materials. According to a compilation of the available age data on the Mesozoic ore deposits in the northern flank of the NCC, we divide the mineralization into the following four periods: 240–205 Ma, 190–160 Ma, 155–135 Ma, and 135–100 Ma. Mesozoic magmatism and mineralization in the Yingfang deposit mainly took place at 245 Ma and 145–135 Ma. We correlate the Pb-Zn-Ag mineralization to metallogeny associated with large-scale inhomogeneous lithosphere thinning beneath the NCC.

<p>The architecture of volcanic systems is essential to know as (1) it yields knowledge on evolution of the volcanic system, thus improving our capability to project future behaviour; (2) as it provides insights regarding geohazards (such as seismic activity, landslides, increased outgassing), crucial for mitigating risk to human population; (3) as it contributes to the assessment of potential for renewable energy resources. High electrical conductivity values are typically associated with volcanic-hydrothermal systems and the magnetotelluric (MT) method has proven to be successful in mapping such conductivity contrasts and constraining volcanic processses.</p><p>The Azores archipelago (Portugal) is formed by nine volcanic islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean where the American, Eurasian, and African plates meet at a triple junction. São Miguel Island is the largest of the archipelago and<span> hosts</span> three trachytic polygenetic volcanoes: Sete Cidades, Fogo (Água de Pau) and Furnas. Following our earlier MT studies at Furnas, 44 high-quality (to ~1000s) broadband MT sites were collected during 2018 across Fogo Volcano and the adjacent Congro region that is prone to seismic swarm activity.</p><p>Our MT studies comprised two avenues: generating geoelectrical models that provided new insights into this unique setting, and investigating and assessing new tools for the MT community.</p><p>(1) Fogo has a resistive core and we do not see a magma chamber beneath.</p><p>(2) Shallow conductive channels are observed beneath Congro and their presence have been tested and validated through forward modelling and additional sensitivity tests.</p><p>(3) The MT results can be used to map clay alteration, with the highly conductive zone on the northern flank of Fogo corresponding to the smectite zone. The alteration temperature distribution is consistent with the formation temperature recorded within the area.</p><p>(4) A potential new geothermal resource has been identified. An area north of Ribeira Cha, on the southern flank of Fogo has very similar characteristics of the Ribeira Grande geothermal system that is located on the northern flank. This area may be key in increasing the energy self-sufficiency of the island. <br><br>Depth slices through the final 3-D MT inversion volume will be presented.</p><p>The new MT processing code of University of Frankfurt was compared against two long-standing codes commonly used in the MT community and it proved to yield superior responses for every site and examples will be presented. See presentation in this session “FFproc - an improved multivariate robust statistical data processing code for the estimation of MT transfer functions” (Castro et al).</p><p>A novel approach exploiting the Jacobian matrix elements for the 3-D MT inversion strategy will be presented. The Jacobian matrix elements map the relationship between the model and model responses, thus portions of the model with low sensitivities infer that the sensitivity structure is algorithmically influenced more strongly by the regularisation term than by the data-fitting term. Our results will show that the computation of the Jacobian matrix (albeit computationally expensive) is a powerful tool in aiding interpretation.</p>

Most fossil feather stars are known only from the centrodorsal often connected to the radial circlet. This is the case for Discometra rhodanica (Fontannes, 1877), the type species of the genus Discometra, collected from the Late Burdigalian of the Miocene Rhône-Provence basin (southeastern France). The quarries operating in this area have exposed layers from the Late Burdigalian on the northern flank of the Lubéron anticline near Ménerbes (basin of Apt, Vaucluse, southeastern France). These layers contain exceptionally well-preserved echinoderms, among which are three specimens of a feather star with cirri and arms still connected to the centrodorsal. They are attributed to a new species: Discometra luberonensis sp. nov. (Himerometridae). The number of arms can reach 60, as in extant species of the genus Himerometra, but the pattern of arm divisions is closer to that of the genus Heterometra, which has no more than 45 arms in extant species. Discometra luberonensis sp. nov. differs from D. rhodanica by the characters of its centrodorsal. Here we redescribe the centrodorsal and radial circlets of D. rhodanica based on previously and newly collected specimens. We designate a neotype for D. rhodanica, because the holotype is considered lost. Affinities between Discometra, Himerometra and Heterometra are discussed.
