Penalty analysis (PA) is a common sensory data analysis method used to develop and improve consumer products. This technique identifies the factors that lead to the greatest reduction in product satisfaction with the largest agreement among participants. Here, we apply PA to a usability study with 51 representative users comparing two different notebook computers with different key travel (1mm vs. 1.5mm). Participants completed a typing task followed by a usability survey. While traditional t-tests revealed limited differences between keyboards, PA identified additional ways to optimize the keyboard by adjusting attributes such as key travel and force. Overall, PA may be a useful complement to usability studies. Recommendations for adapting PA to usability studies will be discussed including advantages and limitations.

Technology development makes influences the way to access the internet, which generally uses Desktop and Notebook computers, giving to other alternatives, namely accessing the internet using Tablets and Smartphones. The problem is that the majority of web layout designs cannot adjust the layout size automatically for these devices, because the resolution size of each device is different. To overcome the existing problems, we need a responsive web design method and technique in order to produce web layouts that can adjust the size of screen resolution automatically. The method used by applying the concept of Responsive Web Design (RWD), so that web layouts can adapt to screen size. Responsive web design techniques can be done in several ways, including using manual techniques using CSS Media Query and implementing CSS Frameworks such as Bootstrap CSS. The test results showed that the implementation of responsive web layouts using Bootstrap was very effective and efficient because web designers only needed the main library from Bootstrap, which was then combined by modifying according to the wishes of the user.

AC power adapters for battery-operated systems, such as smartphones and notebook computers, not only supply run-time power to operate the devices but also charge the built-in batteries. The capacity of the adapter is optimized for the average power demand rather than the maximum power demand to reduce the size and weight of the adapter. Such a reduced capacity adapter may cause the battery to age even when the device is operated with the power adapter while under higher power demand, which is different from the expectation of most users. A recent study proposed a supercapacitor assist architecture to reduce the battery aging when the battery is powered by the adapter. However, the previous work only shows the potential of the architecture. In this work, we propose a design methodology to find the optimal setup for the supercapacitor hybrid architecture considering supercapacitor array structure and power conversion efficiency. The results show that a supercapacitor having 17.5 mF capacity and 20 V withstand voltage is enough to supply the deficient energy of a reduced capacity power adapter.

In recent years, owing to the improvements in technologies and the rapid changes in market demands, the life-cycle of consumer electronic products has been shortened and new products are being released constantly. With rising environmental awareness, product value, and cost are not the only factors defining consumer value; the impact of the product to the environment has become another new factor to affect consumers purchase decisions. A key concept to transform unsustainable to sustainable development is eco-efficiency, a concept that uses less energy and resource to make a product, producing less waste and pollution. However, there has been very little discussion on how beneficial these environmentally friendly products actually are to the consumer. In view of this, the present study proposes a set of methods for consumer value and ecological benefit evaluation from the perspective of consumers. A model for determining the most suitable time to make a purchase is developed with the inclusion of the time factor, and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is used to find the suggested order of purchase at different times on the model. Finally, factors such as different groups of consumers and different types of products are considered in investigating the most appropriate time to make a purchase under different circumstances. This study focused on notebook computers, which are having high variety and easily get obsolete. As for the investigation of different consumer groups, this study found that there is a relatively good product selection order of Ultrabooks for price-conscious and environmentally conscious consumer groups. Business Notebooks are the most suitable option for general consumer groups. Being able to know optimal time to purchase and to evaluate the product ecological benefit would be beneficial to both consumers and the environment nowadays.
