Abstract Background The prevalence of sickness absence is particularly high among employees in health and social care, where psychosocial work stressors are pertinent. Managerial leadership is known to affect sickness absence rates, but the role leadership plays in relation to sickness absence is not fully understood; that is, whether poor leadership (i) is associated with sickness absence directly, (ii) is associated with sickness absence indirectly through the establishment of poor psychosocial working conditions, or (iii) whether good leadership rather has a buffering role in the association between work stressors and sickness absence. Methods Four biennial waves from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH, 2010–2016, N=2333) were used. Autoregressive cross-lagged analyses within a multilevel structural equation modelling (MSEM) framework were conducted to test hypotheses i)–iii), targeting managerial leadership, register-based sickness absence and psychosocial work stressors (high psychological demands, poor decision authority and exposure to workplace violence). Results A direct association was found between poor leadership and sickness absence two years later, but no associations were found between leadership and the psychosocial work stressors. Finally, only in cases of poor leadership was there a statistically significant association between workplace violence and sickness absence. Conclusions Poor managerial leadership may increase the risk of sickness absence among health and social care workers in two ways: first, directly and, second, by increasing the link between workplace violence and sickness absence.

<p>Over past decade, there has been increased use of results-based management in Vietnam and other countries, but little empirical research exists on results-based planning (RBP) in the planning functions of public organizations. Some experiences suggest that managerial leadership may be among the determinants of success, affecting whether and how RBP is used. This thesis answers the following question: What is the impact of leadership styles by public managers on the practices of RBP?  Using empirical observations of current RBP in Vietnamese public organizations and a multiphase mixed method design, this study finds that transformational, transactional, and autocratic leadership styles are often concurrent among public managers (but in varying intensities), and these ‘combined’ leadership styles have a direct, positive, and strong effect on the use and outcomes of RBP practices. This study also finds that leadership effects on RBP are stronger than other organizational factors examined (RBP-related training, bureaucratic culture, funding). Furthermore, among three components of these combined leadership styles, transformational leadership has the greatest contribution to the higher performance of RBP practices. The findings of this research also show the specific leadership behaviors by public managers that are most associated with the increased RBP.  This study contributes to the literature by offering empirical evidence of the role of leadership in deploying reforms such as results-based planning in a context of a developing country. It also provides public organizations with knowledge of leadership styles for implementing such reforms.</p>

This article investigates whether women managers possess any specific leadership attributes which will enable them to be promoted to leadership positions on merit grounds. It also examines whether women encounter barriers, which impede their progress to the top. Data for our study were collected from a sample of 372 managers in leadership positions across India, half of whom were women and the other half were men. The survey was done through the administration of a 21-item questionnaire developed by the authors. Through the application of decision tree analysis, logistic regression analysis and discriminant analysis, we arrived at findings that have reasonable predictive accuracy. Our results suggest that women managers in leadership positions are significantly more likely to get reticent team members to participate at meetings than their male counterparts. This is our principal finding. This is significant, given that contemporary leadership emphasizes inclusivity and distributed leadership. This is because, as our data shows, while women managers are as good as men, they additionally possess an attribute which makes them better suited than men as leaders. Another finding is that many women leaders differ from men in that they often struggle with work–life balance challenges. The suggestion is that companies could offer more options to women to achieve work–life balance. The third finding is that women leaders are perceived as more empathetic than men. The implication is that all of these constitute business arguments favouring organizational support for competent women managers advancing to leadership positions. Data are from India, focussing on Indian managerial leadership.

Education in confinement contexts is a little studied and even invisibilized topic; teachers and management teams do not have enough specific support to carry out their work, which is subject to a series of conditions and demands very different from those of the free environment. A qualitative research in progress, in which data have been collected from 70% of the participants, whose purpose is to map the meaning of educational projects with young people and adults in confinement contexts in the R.M. of Chile, yields relevant information on managerial leadership. In all cases, the principles guiding the educational projects are part of the "pedagogical dream" of the teams leading the schools or programs, who are characterized by a strong ethical commitment and by decision-making that favors the development of the inmates' capacities. Consequently, the management teams do not hesitate to go beyond their responsibilities and seek self-managed alternatives to carry out their work. This makes it possible for non-formal projects and schools to become a symbolic space that is very different from the prison space, moving away from the logic of surveillance and punishment.

The use of quantitative and causal methods is the basis of this study supported by the population in the form of a state-owned enterprise company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the 2015-2019 and purposive sampling period as the basis for determining the sample. Multiple linear regression and moderated regression analysis are selected as data analysis techniques. Based on the results of statistical tests show that partially, financial distress and the size of the company have a significant negative effect on earnings management. Furthermore, Financial Distress moderated by managerial leadership has a significant negative effect on earnings management, as well as the size of the company moderated by managerial ownership has a significant positive effect on earnings management.
