The microscopic origin of friction is an important topic in science and technology. To date, noteworthy aspects of it remain unsolved. In an effort to shed some light on the possible mechanisms that could give rise to the macroscopic emergence of friction, a very simple 1D system of two particles is considered, one of them is free but moving with an initial velocity, and the other confined by a harmonic potential. The two particles interact via a repulsive Gaussian potential. While it represents in a straightforward manner a tip substrate system in the real world, no analytic solutions can be found for its motion. Because of the interaction, the free particle (tip) may overcome the bound particle (substrate) losing part of its kinetic energy. We solve Newton’s equations of the two particles numerically and calculate the net exchange of energy in the asymptotic state in terms of the relevant parameters of the problem. The effective dissipation that emerges from this simple, classical model with no ad hoc terms shows, surprisingly, a range of rich, nontrivial, behavior. We give theoretical reasoning which provides a satisfactory qualitative description. The essential ingredient of that reasoning is that the transfer of energy from the incoming particle to the confined one can be regarded as the source of the emergent dissipation force the friction experienced by the incoming particle.

Anisotropy parabolic potential (APP) effects on ground state (GS) energy [Formula: see text] and the vibration frequency (VF) [Formula: see text] of weak-coupled magnetopolaron (MP) in asymmetric Gaussian quantum wells (AGQWs) were investigated using the linear combination operator and unitary transformation method. The obtained results showed that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] were increased by increasing the barrier height [Formula: see text] of AGQWs as well as transverse and longitudinal confined strengths [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of APP and decreased with increase in the asymmetric Gaussian confinement potential (AGCP) range [Formula: see text] and transverse and longitudinal effective confined lengths [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of APP. Thus, the GS energy and VF of MP could be changed by adjusting the confinement parameters of the APP and AGCP. The study of quantum wells’ semiconductor materials has broad potential applications in semiconductor lasers, optoelectronic devices and quantum information.

AbstractThis contribution provides information about correlations among the neutron-proton (np) elastic scattering observables. The most basic prerequisite for this study is existence of models of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) force, for which a covariance matrix of potential parameters is available. Using the covariance matrices for the chiral SMS NN potential from the Bochum-Bonn group and the one for the OPE-Gaussian potential proposed by the Granada group, we performed a systematic analysis of the correlation coefficients between the differential cross section and the depolarization R, as well as between R and the polarization P.

In this article, we provide an expansion (up to the fourth order of the coupling constant) of the energy of the ground state of the Hamiltonian of a quantum mechanical particle moving inside a parabolic well in the x-direction and constrained by the presence of a two-dimensional impurity, modelled by an attractive two-dimensional isotropic Gaussian potential. By investigating the associated Birman–Schwinger operator and exploiting the fact that such an integral operator is Hilbert–Schmidt, we use the modified Fredholm determinant in order to compute the energy of the ground state created by the impurity.

Abstract In this paper, the effects of external electric, magnetic and non-resonant intense laser fields on the nonlinear optical rectification (NOR), second-harmonic (SH), and third-harmonic (TH) generation in a GaAs quantum well with asymmetrical Gaussian potential are theoretically investigated. Firstly, the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a single electron confined in the structure are obtained by using the diagonalization method within the framework of the effective-mass and parabolic band approaches. Then, using these energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, expressions derived within the compact density matrix approximation has been employed to calculate the coefficients of the nonlinear optical response in the structure. The obtained simulation results show that the influence of the external fields leads to significant changes in the coefficients of nonlinear optical rectification, second and third harmonic generation in the system. As a result, it has been seen that the amplitude and position of the peaks of nonlinear optical rectification, second and third harmonic coefficients can be controlled by changing the applied external fields.
