Public spaces are essential for any city as they define place character; they are the meeting point for social and cultural actions. Place attachment is moulded by the tie between individuals and places. The research examines the historic streets, which are remainders of their period when the pedestrian flow was predominant and had exceptional qualities that supported social action. The changed settings nowadays might have changed people’s views and the investigation was made to question and check individual’s common memory and their sensitive ties to the historic streets. The four streets from the Walled City of Lahore were selected upon their significance of history and usage. The questionnaires were prepared and the fieldwork analysis was conducted face to face and selected streets were investigated in the terms of, place attachment, identity, and memory. The outcome proved that there is a promising feeling of attachment towards the selected streets and lacking qualities of a street can be improved if look closely at the worthy streets. The study addressed an important issue of marginalization and the results from the Shah-Almi street shows that their act will create the walled city streets to lose their identity as it is formed by its users.

This study explores the relationship between offline and online contexts in social movement discourse. We test whether local place character—the cultural reputations, values, and ideals associated with a particular location—predict support for feminism expressed on Twitter. Applying topic modeling to a unique corpus describing cities’ cultural reputations, we identify five cultural attributes of U.S. cities that constitute their place character. Then, we use these measures to predict the percentage of tweets that are positive toward feminism in each location. The results indicate that while social media may connect people from geographically distant areas, online discourse is still heavily influenced by the local spaces where users reside. Cities with a place character of Revitalization have more positive Twitter sentiment toward feminism, while areas known as Local Hubs for shopping and leisure are more negative. These findings contribute to social movement scholarship by highlighting one way that offline and online contexts are connected. Far from transcending local geographies, social movement discourse taking place online remains shaped by the cultural environment where it originates.

How does culture influence the political and economic processes shaping cities? Socially rich but unprofitable land uses, such as community gardens, create a trade–off between maintaining local character and increasing exchange value. To understand how less profitable land uses can prevail in development conflicts, I examined documents and interviewed advocates for Seattle's P–Patch program, which has secured virtual permanence for its publicly owned garden sites. My historical analysis shows that the P–Patch advocates, endowed with significant cultural capital, appealed to notions of Seattle's place character and leveraged the city's legal–policy infrastructure to institutionalize community gardens within Seattle's urban planning framework. The gardens serve a wide constituency, including many low–income and minority residents, but as neighborhood amenities signifying urban sustainability, they also contribute to gentrification. My findings suggest that residents can leverage culture and local character to protect use value, but equity is far from inherent to this process and therefore requires deliberate consideration.

In addition to Barbara Kopple’s recognized contributions to documentary filmmaking, she directed several fictional works for both television broadcast and theatrical release. Although she often refers to herself as a director of both non-fiction and fiction, since both are important to her, very little critical attention has been paid to her fictional work such as the television episodes she directed for Homicide: Life on the Street, the PBS production Keeping On (1983), based on a screenplay by Horton Foote, and the independent feature Havoc (2005). This chapter examines the ways that she uses documentary techniques associated with cinema verite to establish a sense of place, character, realism, and social engagement within fictional stories. Rather than see her fictional work as an addendum to her acclaimed documentaries, the chapter argues that there is a continuum in which dramatic form and documentary practice inform one another as part of her style and approach to filmmaking.

The street as a public space plays an essential role in representing the character of a city. Therefore, it is vital to create streets that are pedestrian friendly. However, rapid urbanisation has increased reliance on motorised modes of transport, especially in developing countries. This has created urban street environments unfriendly for walking, which diminishes the place character. This study thus aims to determine the ground-level building opening design concepts of the traditional street that promote street interaction via a case study of Jalan Tukang Besi, Jalan Tukang Emas, and Jalan Tokong in Melaka Historic City. The study applies a mixed-method approach with a survey, in-depth interviews of street users, observation, and review of historical documents to identify the character of the traditional street within the design of ground-level building opening. The findings reveal that the building opening design concept should correspond to the building function. The design concept for a commercial use building should be more transparent compared to a residential building, which is more private in character. The findings inform designers and planners on the importance of referring to our traditional street design and to apply the concepts in the design of new or existing streets, thereby preserving the local character.

This paper presents an on-going progress of a study on landscape elements in the context of culture. The study has sought to discover people’s perception, experience and responses towards their surroundings based on elements that relate to their culture and norms. Eventually, new developments do not seem to recognize and respect the importance of cultural aspects resulting disoriented buildings. An extensive reviewed of the literature was conducted to rediscover the fundamental notions of place, perception and experience. Therefore, the background review to structure the work concluded places that add value contribute to establish the urban setting and place context. eISSN 2514-751X © 2018. The Authors.
