Economics has been trying to understand market functioning for a long time. However, the neoclassical approach does not satisfy the understanding of the mechanisms that operate in the construction, stabilization, and transformation of markets. For this reason, economic sociology proposes to provide subsidies from causal pluralism, rejecting explanatory theories of purely rational choices. Therefore, the use of sociological theories in the understanding of agri-food markets is also necessary. In this sense, this work aimed to compare the market for agri-food products with a geographical indication (GI) between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, based on the performance of brands and supermarkets in both regions. For this, we used a data survey of thousands of products and respective GI registrations in the most prominent online markets of countries in both regions. We applied analyses that differentiated the economic blocs and used field theory to explain the phenomena found in the findings. The results indicated the formation of relevant bands in the GI market, a little voluminous, but capable of crossing borders, a second, with the majority of GIs found that are only commercialized locally, and a third invisible, where most products are located, which do not exist in these markets. Furthermore, supermarkets’ own brands have great relevance and are decisive in building the market.

Abstract Bitcoin and similar cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly popular as a payment method in both legitimate and illegitimate online markets. Such markets usually deploy a review system that allows users to rate their purchases and help others to determine reliable vendors. Consequently, vendors are interested into accumulating as many positive reviews (likes) as possible and to make these public. However, we present an attack that exploits these publicly available information to identify cryptocurrency addresses potentially belonging to vendors. In its basic variant, it focuses on vendors that reuse their addresses. We also show an extended variant that copes with the case that addresses are used only once. We demonstrate the applicability of the attack by modeling Bitcoin transactions based on vendor reviews of two separate darknet markets and retrieve matching transactions from the blockchain. By doing so, we can identify Bitcoin addresses likely belonging to darknet market vendors.

This chapter discusses the morality of online price discrimination. Price discrimination is a widespread type of market behaviour and it occurs, roughly, when a seller systematically charges different prices for the same product when it is offered to different groups of customers. Price discrimination occurs both online and offline, but some find the practice particularly suspicious when deployed in online markets. This asymmetry, we argue, calls for an explanation. In the chapter, we define price discrimination and review a number of explanations of why, and when, price discrimination is morally objectionable. We argue that online price discrimination will often prove more problematic than its offline counterpart, but also that neither practice is necessarily morally wrong.

We conduct a field experiment with sellers of home improvement services on two German online markets. We take the role of consumers and vary whether we request an invoice for the delivery of the service. In a market that allows anyone to sell anonymously, a willingness to evade is prevalent. In a market that keeps track of credentials, sellers are only willing to evade when a willingness to collude is signaled. The evasion discount is in most estimates not larger than the tax subsidy for legal demand. Evasion is unlikely to be beneficial for many consumers in our setting. (JEL C93, H25, H26, L84)

Information and communication technology has had an impact on the food and drug online market. However, not all food and drugs in the online market have permits and other requirements that can threaten public health. Against something that is detrimental to society and requires protection from the government, it requires public policy to overcome. In the implementation, public policy requires the role of the bureaucracy, the private sector, and community groups. This paper examines efforts to protect public health against online markets of food and drug from the perspective of the roles of the government, the private sector, and the community. The research approach used is qualitative with a descriptive analysis method. The data collection technique was carried out by means of a literature study. The government has limited resources in monitoring online markets that do not recognize geographic boundaries. The private sector has a role in creating integrated programs that support policies and pay attention to consumer rights. The community also plays a role in increasing awareness and reporting to the marketplace and BPOM on illegal products. Several suggestions, among others, need to increase the socialization of regulations; making technical regulations and pharmaceutical service standards in the online market of drugs; improvement of communication, information, and education; increasing The National of Drug and Food Control resources and increasing the role of the marketplace in filtering every product sold. In addition, it will accelerate the discussion of the drug and food control draft which is included in the Prolegnas 2021.
