This paper critically examines the representation of gender and race in the biographical drama film Hidden Figures (2016), directed by Theodore Melfi. The film is based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s nonfiction book of the same title, which spotlights previously hidden figures in US history: the black female mathematicians who worked in the early US space program. The movie was released to critical acclaim and embraced by audiences as empowering African American girls. At the same time, the film was criticized for including a ‘white savior’ scene in which the black female protagonists are marginalized. After providing background information on Shetterly’s book and the film’s critical reception, this paper conducts a close formal analysis of a pivotal sequence in the film, which is compared to the events told in the nonfiction book. To shed light on the power structures that the film sequence projects, the results of this analysis are, subsequently, related to critical theoretical approaches to Hollywood cinema, as well as to Sara Ahmed’s concept of ‘affective economies.’ In conclusion, we argue that Hollywood filmmakers’ expectations about the desires of ‘mainstream’ audiences work to perpetuate the repression of previously repressed herstory on the ‘silver screen.’

Liberty Brought Us Here: The True Story of American Slaves Who Migrated to Liberia is a narrative nonfiction book that tells the compelling story of four adults and twelve children from southwestern Kentucky who, after being freed from slavery, migrated to Liberia. It is also the tale of Ben Major, the white man who freed them. The Majors and their former neighbors, the Harlans, were sixteen of the 16,000 black people who left the United States under the auspices of the American Colonization Society. It was the largest out-migration in the country’s history. The emigrants were of African ancestry, but they were not Africans, and were unprepared for the deprivation, disease, and disasters that awaited them. Unlike many former slave owners, Ben stayed in touch with the people he had freed. He sent them much-needed items, such as seeds, tools, books, medicine, and other supplies to help them survive and flourish. In return, they sent coffee, peanuts, and other items to Ben. Liberty Brought Us Here explores this unusual relationship between former slaves and their former owner in the context of the debate over slavery, the controversial colonization movement, and the establishment of the Republic of Liberia.

How do contemporary Jewish traditions respond to the fraught activity of eating animals, especially in an ethical register? This chapter sketches a partial answer to this question by considering two stories: The first is told by contemporary Jewish novelist Jonathan Safran Foer in his 2009 nonfiction book critiquing the meat industry, Eating Animals. Moving from the contemporary to the canonical, the second story is the biblical narrative about eating animals found in Genesis 1 and 9. Taken together, these two stories straddle an immense territory from the oldest strata of Jewish texts ever to address the question of eating animals to among the most recent texts to do so, from the popular appeal of contemporary nonfiction to the authoritative density of the Bible. These stories provide the reader a feel for how Jews find distinct ways to explore ethical questions, in this case about eating animals, through sharing and interpreting stories.

This essay examines the sporting failures and racial iconicity of James “Boobie” Miles, whose athletic performance of defeat on the gridiron is chronicled in H. G. Bissinger’s bestselling nonfiction book Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, A Dream (1990), Peter Berg’s film adaptation Friday Night Lights (2004), and Big K.R.I.T.’s songs and music videos “Hometown Hero” from his album K.R.I.T. Wuz Here (2010) and “Boobie Miles” from his album 4eva N a Day (2012). Examining how the film displaces defeat, locating its effects and affects in the injured running back, I unpack the ways (Black) popular culture reclaims Boobie’s embodied failures on screen as a site of rhetorical agency and oppositional theorizing.

This chapter reads Baldwin’s award-winning essay, “Atlanta: The Evidence of Things Not Seen” and elaborated final nonfiction book, The Evidence of Things Not Seen, as a corrective to sensationalist media accounts of the Atlanta child murders and simplistic gloss-overs of the New South. This chapter argues that while Evidence is perhaps Baldwin’s most neglected work (both upon publication and today), it offers one of the most penetrating examinations of the paradoxes, hypocrisies, and illusions of the Reagan era. It also presciently anticipates the “post-racial” violence that continues in the Obama era, from Trayvon Martin to Mike Brown, from Sandra Bland to the Charleston Nine.
