Background: A common and debilitating challenge experienced by people with TBI is gait-associated mobility impairment and persisting cognitive impairments. Cognitive and physical impairments are often addressed independently during rehabilitation, however, increasing evidence links cognitive and motor processes more closely.Objectives: (1) To determine if correlations exist between measures of cognitive and gait recovery, post-TBI. (2) To investigate the predictive power of cognition at 2-months on gait outcomes at 12-months post-TBI.Methods: In this secondary, longitudinal study of cognitive and neural recovery, data from 93 participants admitted to an inpatient neurorehabilitation program were analyzed. Spatiotemporal gait variables [velocity, step time variability (STV), step length variability (SLV)] were collected along with cognitive variables [Trail Making Test-B (TMT-B), Digit Span-Forward (DS-F)]. Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated between gait and cognitive variables. Multilinear and step wise regression analyses were calculated to determine predictive value of cognitive variables at 2-months on gait performance at 12-months-post TBI.Results: At 2-months post-injury, TMT-B was significantly correlated with gait velocity and STV; and DS-F was significantly correlated with velocity. At 12-months post-injury, TMT-B and DS-F was still significant correlated with velocity. TMT-B at 2-months was correlated with SLV and STV at 12-months; and DS-F correlated significantly with velocity. Regression models showed TMT-B at 2-months predicting STV, SLV, and velocity at 12-months.Conclusions: Significant associations and predictions between physical and cognitive recovery post-TBI were observed in this study. Future directions may consider a “neural internetwork” model as a salient rehabilitation approach in TBI that integrates physical and cognitive functions.

AbstractClark and Wells’ prominent model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) assumes that cognitive variables such as negative expectations or dysfunctional cognitions play a central role in the symptomatology of SAD. In contrast to adults, it is less clear how well the cognitive model can be applied to children and adolescents. A network analysis with seven nodes was conducted to explore the importance of cognitive variables and their interaction with symptoms of SAD based on N = 205 children and adolescents (8–18 years, M = 11.54 years). Cognitive variables had a high but differential impact within the positively connected network of SAD. Dysfunctional cognitions were most strongly connected within the network. Dysfunctional cognitions, as predicted by Clark and Wells’ model, seem to act as a hub affecting several symptoms. The association between negative expectations and avoidance indicates that negative expectations may particularly contribute to the maintenance of SAD.

Humans and other animals demonstrate a remarkable ability to generalize knowledge across distinct contexts and objects during natural behavior. We posit that this ability depends on the geometry of the neural population representations of these objects and contexts. Specifically, abstract, or disentangled, neural representations -- in which neural population activity is a linear function of the variables important for making a decision -- are known to allow for this kind of generalization. Further, recent neurophysiological studies have shown that the brain has sufficiently abstract representations of some sensory and cognitive variables to enable generalization across distinct contexts. However, it is unknown how these abstract representations emerge. Here, using feedforward neural networks, we demonstrate a simple mechanism by which these abstract representations can be produced: The learning of multiple distinct classification tasks. We demonstrate that, despite heterogeneity in the task structure, abstract representations that enable reliable generalization can be produced from a variety of different inputs -- including standard nonlinearly mixed inputs, inputs that mimic putative representations from early sensory areas, and even simple image inputs from a standard machine learning data set. Thus, we conclude that abstract representations of sensory and cognitive variables emerge from the multiple behaviors that animals exhibit in the natural world, and may be pervasive in high-level brain regions. We make several specific predictions about which variables will be represented abstractly as well as show how these representations can be detected.

Introduction: The relationship that socio-familial and non-cognitive variables have on students in regards to their academic performance is a very important element for success in Secondary Education. In this study the influence of non-cognitive variables (academic self-concept, self-efficacy and perceived family affective support) and socio-familial variables (educational level and expectations of each parent) on the academic performance of secondary school students were analysed. Method: Students were grouped according to their accumulated socio-familial risk index (at-risk students, n = 305; not-at-risk students, n = 991). To measure the variables, the scales What do you think of yourself, General Self-Efficacy and Perceived Family Support were used. Socio-family variables were measured with an ad hoc questionnaire, and academic performance with the end-of-course evaluation scores. Results: The receiver operating characteristic curve showed a decrease in students’ academic performance from three or more accumulated risks. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was performed for each group. The results showed that for at-risk students, academic performance was mainly determined by two variables: academic self-concept and self-concept; in contrast to the not-at-risk students in which self-efficacy was the one that had the greatest effect on performance. In both groups, the parents’ expectations were the family variable with the highest incidence being performance, although, for the at-risk group, the effect was greater. Conclusions: The relevance of the identification of non-cognitive and socio-familial variables on the academic performance of at-risk students in regards to secondary education due to socio-familial factors is discussed.

Objectives: Cognitive aging has been extensively investigated using both univariate and multivariate analyses. Sophisticated multivariate approaches such as graph theory could potentially capture unknown complex associations between multiple cognitive variables. The aim of this study was to assess whether cognition is organized into a structure that could be called the “cognitive connectome,” and whether such connectome differs between age groups.Methods: A total of 334 cognitively unimpaired individuals were stratified into early-middle-age (37–50 years, n = 110), late-middle-age (51–64 years, n = 106), and elderly (65–78 years, n = 118) groups. We built cognitive networks from 47 cognitive variables for each age group using graph theory and compared the groups using different global and nodal graph measures.Results: We identified a cognitive connectome characterized by five modules: verbal memory, visual memory—visuospatial abilities, procedural memory, executive—premotor functions, and processing speed. The elderly group showed reduced transitivity and average strength as well as increased global efficiency compared with the early-middle-age group. The late-middle-age group showed reduced global and local efficiency and modularity compared with the early-middle-age group. Nodal analyses showed the important role of executive functions and processing speed in explaining the differences between age groups.Conclusions: We identified a cognitive connectome that is rather stable during aging in cognitively healthy individuals, with the observed differences highlighting the important role of executive functions and processing speed. We translated the connectome concept from the neuroimaging field to cognitive data, demonstrating its potential to advance our understanding of the complexity of cognitive aging.

Most people with MS experience cognitive deficits especially in attention, memory, information processing, and executive functions, negatively impacting on their quality of life. Cognitive variables of short-term memory, logical memory, and verbal fluency in 65 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) were analysed in conjunction with sociodemographic variables such as sex, age, and educational level that might influence disease progression. We found that psychoeducational variables exerted a significant effect on the cognitive status of patients with MS. Thus, when considering sex, age, educational level, and type of MS (SPMS or RRMS), tests for between-subject effects revealed statistically significant differences in all three cognitive variables. In addition, we found that the type of MS and time since onset also generated significant cognitive differences. Our study shows that educational achievement or level is a protective factor against the disease, acting as a source of intellectual enrichment that promotes cognitive reserve in patients with MS. Further longitudinal studies assessing disease progression and prognosis in patients with MS would be useful in order to determine the specific importance of these variables in such patients and in strategies that could enhance their performance in neuropsychological assessment tasks.
