Abstract Dropcast films produced from blends solutions of phenazine 1,2,3-triazole molecules in very low concentrations in a 1,3-Bis (N-carbazolyl) benzene (mCP) matrix were investigated at room temperature. The mCP acts as an optically inert matrix, having no influence on the emission properties of the guest molecules. Its conductive properties also ensure that blend films, within a completely organic character, are formed as truly active layers. The fluorescent and phosphorescent emission properties of the phenazine molecules, depending on their conformational states, allowed relatively intense emissions in blue, green, red and also in white, without the need to mix different materials. Although the results of absorption of the blended films have shown no characteristics of the guest molecules, due to their relatively low concentrations, the excitation of them occurs directly by the incident laser beam. The steady-state spectroscopy for the monomer and dimer singlet fluorescence states of respective blue and green emissions of the films were investigated. The analysis of their temporal decays were done using a different approach based on the Exponentially Modified Gaussian (EMG) function. The phosphorescent emissions of the triplet steady-states, occurring in the orange or in the red wavelength regions, were observed to be correlated, respectively, to the formation of guest monomers or to the guest dimers singlet states.

Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of formulation factors on in vitro release of ketoprofen from sustained release inert matrix tablets. Materials and methods. Laboratory scale, Ketoprofen sustained release inert matrix tablets were manufactured using Kollidon® SR as matrix formator, by direct tableting of powder blends. The influence of the formulation factors (X1 – matrix formator excipient and X2 – diluent type) on in vitro release of ketoprofen from sustained release tablets was studied by using a full factorial 23 experimental plan. Outcomes. Pharmacotechnical characterization of manufactured laboratory scale batches was performed and all 12 batches fulfilled European Pharmacopeia requests. In vitro release showed a sustained release profile in all cases. Variance analysis (ANOVA) showed a good correlation between experimental conditions and answers. In vitro release testing was performed in phosphate buffer pH = 7.4. Percentage release was determined spectrophotometrically at 258 nm. A decrease in the rate of in vitro release was registered, up to 4 h and 6 h when lactose DC and mannitol DC were used as diluents, respectively. Isomalt DC has increased the rate of in vitro release up to 6 h. Conclusions. In vitro release data, corresponding to formulation N1 shoed a good fitting with Weitbull, Korshmeyer-Peppas and Higuchi models while in vitro release data corresponding to formulation N8 presented a good fitting with Weitbull and Korsmeyer-Peppas. In case of formulations N1 and N8 a non-Fickian diff usion mechanism seems to be involved in drug release from the matrix tablets.

An experimental study of hydrogen sulfide adsorption on a fixed bed for biogas purification is proposed. The adsorbent investigated was powdered hematite, synthesized by a wet-chemical precipitation method and further activated with copper (II) oxide, used both as produced and after pelletization with polyvinyl alcohol as a binder. The pelletization procedure aims at optimizing the mechanical properties of the pellet without reducing the specific surface area. The active substrate has been characterized in its chemical composition and physical properties by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N2 physisorption/desorption for the determination of surface area. Both powders and pellets have been tested as sorbents for biogas purification in a fixed bed of a steady-state adsorption column and the relevant breakthrough curves were determined for different operating conditions. The performance was critically analyzed and compared with that typical of other commercial sorbents based on zinc oxide or relying upon specific compounds supported on a chemically inert matrix (SulfaTreat®). The technique proposed may represent a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to commercial sorbents in conventional desulphurization processes.

Polymer composites are widely used modern-day materials, specially designed to combine good mechanical properties and low density, resulting in a high tensile strength-to-weight ratio. However, materials for outdoor use suffer from the negative effects of environmental factors, loosing properties in various degrees. In particular, natural fillers (particulates or fibers) or components induce biodegradability in the otherwise bio inert matrix of usual commodity plastics. Here we present some aspects found in recent literature related to the effect of aggressive factors such as temperature, mechanical forces, solar radiation, humidity, and biological attack on the properties of plastic composites containing natural fillers.

AbstractBurnet moths (Zygaena spp.) are day-flying Lepidoptera considered indicative of species-rich grasslands. In the present study, our aim was to clarify whether clear-cuts are habitat, supporting habitat or matrix for three species of Zygaena. We did so by sampling these species with sex pheromones on 48 clear-cuts, varying in amount of host and nectar plants, in southern Sweden. To compare the efficiency of such sampling, we also conducted transect walks on these clearcuts. Overall, host-plants on clear-cuts best explained the abundance of Zygaena spp. recorded, better than nectar-plants or connectivity with nearby grasslands. These results indicate that clear-cuts with an abundance of host plants are used as a fully functional habitat, and not a supporting habitat in the sense of only providing nectar. There is no support in these results for considering clear-cuts as an inert matrix. With about half the work-effort, pheromone traps recorded 100 times more Zygaena spp. as transect walks. The poor correspondence between observations during transects walks and pheromone trap catches suggest Zygaena spp. being difficult to monitor by transect walks. In contrast to grasslands, clear-cuts are short-term in nature requiring repeated recolonization, indicating the importance of permanent grasslands. However, clear-cuts are important temporary insect habitats due to their great acreage, and suitable management can increase the time they remain a habitat.
