A fundamental goal of photochemistry is to understand how structural features of a chromophore can make specific bonds within a molecule prone to cleavage by light, or photolabile. The meta effect is an example of a regiochemical explanation for photolability, in which electron donating groups on an aromatic ring cause photolability selectively at the meta position. Here, we show, using a chromophore containing one ring with a meta-methoxy group and one ring with a para-methoxy group, that two stereoisomers of the same compounds can react with light differently, based simply on the three-dimensional positioning of a meta anisyl ring. The result is that the stereoisomers of the compound with the same configuration at both stereogenic centers are photolabile while the stereoisomers with opposite configuration do not react with light. Furthermore, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations show distinct excitation pathways for each stereoisomer.

In continuation of studies for α-MSH stimulated melanogenesis inhibitors, we have evaluated the design, synthesis, and activity of a new series of chlorogenic acid (CGA) analogues comprising pyridine, pyrimidine, and diacyl derivatives. Among nineteen synthesized compounds, most of them (fifteen) exhibited better inhibitions of melanin formation in B16 melanoma cells. The results illustrated that a pyridine analogue 6f and a diacyl derivative 13a of CGA showed superior inhibition profiles (IC50: 2.5 ± 0.7 μM and 1.1 ± 0.1 μM, respectively) of α-MSH activities than positive controls, kojic acid and arbutin (IC50: 54 ± 1.5 μM and 380 ± 9.5 μM, respectively). The SAR studies showed that both –CF3 and –Cl groups exhibited better inhibition at the meta position on benzylamine than their ortho and para positions. In addition, the stability of diacyl analogues of CGA in methanol monitored by HPLC for 28 days indicated the steric bulkiness of acyl substituents as a key factor in their stability.

Abstract We previously extracted and purified a chromene amide from Amyris texana and found this scaffold is moderately insecticidal and thus, this study aimed to test the insecticidal properties of 13 synthetically derived chromene analogs to the fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda). Microinjection of chromenes with alcohol or aldehydes substitutions at the meta position on the benzopyran moiety led to moderate toxicity that was approximately 2- to 3-fold less toxic when compared to permethrin, yet microinjection of differently substituted chromenes exhibited little to no toxicity. Similarly, chromenes with alcohol or aldehydes substitutions at the meta position on the benzopyran moiety were among the most toxic chromenes studied through ingested exposure. In addition to acute toxicity, select chromenes significantly increased the percentage of developmental defects upon eclosion that prevented adult moths from being capable of flight, suggesting these compounds alter development. Interestingly, microinjection yielded differing signs of intoxication between alcohol and aldehyde substitutions where the alcohol resulted in flaccid paralysis and lethargy whereas aldehyde led to tonic contractions and hyperactivity. These contrasting signs of intoxication were also observed in electrophysiological assays where alcohol substitutions led to the depression of central neuron firing activity and aldehyde substitutions led to hyperexcitation of central neurons. In summary, the chromene amides led to acute lethality and/or altered developmental trajectories of FAW, yet the high doses required for acute mortality suggest these scaffolds hold relatively little promise for development into FAW-directed insecticides but may represent novel growth regulators for FAW.

AbstractNew homologues series of liquid crystalline materials namely, (E)-3-methoxy-4-[(p-tolylimino)methyl]phenyl 4-alkloxybenzoates (I-n), were designed and evaluated for their mesomorphic and optical behavior. The prepared series constitutes three members that differ from each other by the terminally attached alkoxy chain group, these vary between 6 and 12 carbons. A laterally OCH3 group is incorporated into the central benzene ring in meta position with respect to the ester moiety. Mesomorphic characterizations of the prepared derivatives are conducted using differential scanning-calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical-microscopy (POM). Molecular structures were elucidated by elemental analyses and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM investigations revealed that all the synthesized derivatives are purely nematogenic exhibiting only nematic (N) mesophase, except for the longest chain derivative (I-12) that is dimorphic possesses smectic A and N phases. Moreover, all members of the group have a wide mesomorphic range with high thermal nematic stability. A comparative study was established between the present derivative (I-6) and their previously prepared isomer. The results indicated that the location exchange of the polar compact group (CH3) influences the N mesophase stability and range. The electrical measurements revealed that all synthesized series I-n show Ohmic behaviors with effective electric resistances in the GΩ range. Under white light illumination, the effective electric conductivity for the compound I-8 is five times that obtained in dark conditions. This derivative also showed two direct optical band gaps in the UV and visible light range. In addition, I-6 has band energy gaps of values 1.07 and 2.79 eV, which are suitable for solar energy applications.

A new laterally fluorinated unsymmetric liquid crystalline homologous series, based on cinnamate linkage, named 2-fluoro-4-(4-(alkoxy)phenyl)diazenyl)phenyl cinnamate (In), was synthesized and evaluated via different experimental and computational tools. The series had different terminal alkoxy-chain lengths with a lateral F atom in the meta position with respect to the azo moiety. The experimental mesomorphic and optical investigations were carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Theoretical calculations and geometrical parameter predictions were conducted using the DFT program method at B3LYP/6-311G** level of theory. The results revealed that all the designed compounds exhibited the nematic (N) mesophase enantiotropically. The nematic stability and temperature range were impacted by the terminal alkoxy chain length. Compounds with the shortest chains (I6 and I8) showed a monotropic smectic A (SmA) phase, while the longest chain derivative, I16, possessed enantiotropic Sm A phase. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) predictions were correlated with the practically observed data from the mesomorphic investigations. Data revealed that the terminal alkoxy and lateral F groups had an essential impact on the total energy of possible geometrical structures and their physical and thermal parameters.

<div> <div> <div> <p>The geometrical structures, relative Z-E energies, and second-order nonlinear responses of a collection of azobenzene molecules symmetrically substituted in meta- position with functional groups of different bulkiness are investigated using various ab initio and DFT levels of approximation. We show that RI-MP2 and RI-CC2 approximations provide very similar geometries and relative energies and evidence that London dispersion interactions existing between bulky meta-substituents stabilize the Z con- former. The !B97-X-D exchange-correlation functional provides an accurate description of these effects and gives a good account of the nonlinear optical response of the molecules. We show that density functional approximations should include no less than 50% of Hartree-Fock exchange to provide accurate hyperpolarizabilities. A property-structure analysis of the azobenzene derivatives reveals that the main contribution to the first hyperpolarizability comes from the azo bond, but phenyl meso-substituents can enhance it.</p> </div> </div> </div>

New mesomorphic series, 4-hexadecyloxy phenyl-imino-4′-(3-methoxyphenyl)-4″-alkoxybenzoates (An), were prepared and investigated with different thermal and mesomorphic techniques. The synthesized homologous series constitutes four members that differ from each other in the terminal length of flexible chain (n) attached to phenyl ester moiety, which varies between n = 6, 8, 10, and 12 carbons. A lateral CH3O group is attached to the central benzene ring in the meta position with respect to the ester moiety. Molecular structures of all newly prepared homologues were elucidated via FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Mesomorphic and thermal properties were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the mesophases identified by polarized optical microscopy (POM). DSC and POM examinations revealed that all members of the present series (An) exhibit a purely enantiotropic nematic (N) phase. Comparative evaluations and binary phase diagrams were established between the present homologues and their corresponding shorter one (Bn). The examination revealed that, the length of the flexible alkoxy chain incorporated into the phenylimino moiety is highly effective on the temperature range and stability of the mesophase observed. With respect to the binary mixtures An/Bn, the exhibited N phase showed to cover the whole composition range with eutectic behavior.

Biofilm formation is a critical health concern, involved in most human bacterial infections. Combatting this mechanism, which increases resistance to traditional antibiotics and host immune defences, requires novel therapeutic approaches. The remarkable biocide activity and the monodispersity of carbosilane metallodendrimers make them excellent platforms to evaluate the impact of different structural parameters on the biological activity. In this work, we explore the influence of iminopyridine ring substituents on the antibacterial activity against planktonic and biofilm Staphylococcus aureus. New families of first-generation Ru(II) and Cu(II) metallodendrimers were synthesised and analysed, in comparison to the non-substituted counterparts. The results showed that the presence of methyl or methoxy groups in meta position to the imine bond decreased the overall positive charge on the metal ion and, subsequently, the activity against planktonic bacteria. However, it seemed a relevant parameter to consider for the prevention of biofilm formation, if they contribute to increasing the overall lipophilicity. An optimum balance of the charge and lipophilicity of the metallodrug, accomplished through structural design, will provide effective biocide agents against bacteria biofilms.

Abstract The development of graphene oxide/rare earth complexes luminescent materials is limited due to the strong quenching ability of graphene oxide. However, the hybrid materials with pyromellitic acid (PMA) as ligand not only have better performance, but also have stronger luminescence intensity. Herein we tested the effect of the carboxylic acid structure of PMA on the luminescence intensity of graphene oxide/rare earth complexes hybrid materials. Phthalic acid (PA), Isophthalic acid (i-PA) and Terephthalic acid (p-PA) are selected as test ligand, representing the o-position, meta-position and para-position effects of PMA. By comparing the luminescence intensity, we found that o-position effect is helpful for the ligand to sensitize rare earth ions, and meta-position and para-position effects are helpful for the graphene oxide sheets (GOSs) to improve the luminescence intensity of hybrid materials and inhibit the quenching effect of the GOSs. Furthermore, we speculate on the relationship between the distance of π-π stacking of GOSs and rare earth complexes and luminescence intensity of hybrid materials. This work provides an important reference for the design of graphene oxide/rare-earth aromatic carboxylic acid hybrid luminescent materials.
