Background: Neurodegenerative disorders belong to different classes of progressive/chronic conditions that affect the peripheral/central nervous system. It has been shown through studies that athletes who play sports involving repeated head trauma and sub-concussive impacts are more likely to experience neurological impairments and neurodegenerative disorders in the long run. Aims: The aim of the current narrative review article is to provide a summary of various nutraceuticals that offer promise in the prevention or management of sports-related injuries, especially concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries. Methods: This article reviews the various potential nutraceutical agents and their possible mechanisms in providing a beneficial effect in the injury recovery process. A thorough survey of the literature was carried out in the relevant databases to identify studies published in recent years. In the present article, we have also highlighted the major neurological disorders along with the associated nutraceutical(s) therapy in the management of disorders. Results: The exact pathological mechanism behind neurodegenerative conditions is complex as well as idiopathic. However, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress as well as intracellular calcium overload are some common reasons responsible for the progression of these neurodegenerative disorders. Owing to the multifaceted effects of nutraceuticals (complementary medicine), these supplements have gained importance as neuroprotective. These diet-based approaches inhibit different pathways in a physiological manner without eliciting adverse effects. Food habits and lifestyle of an individual also affect neurodegeneration. Conclusion: Studies have shown nutraceuticals (such as resveratrol, omega-3-fatty acids) to be efficacious in terms of their neuroprotection against several neurodegenerative disorders and to be used as supplements in the management of traumatic brain injuries. Protection prior to injuries is needed since concussions or sub-concussive impacts may trigger several pathophysiological responses or cascades that can lead to long-term complications associated with CNS. Thus, the use of nutraceuticals as prophylactic treatment for neurological interventions has been proposed.

Abstract Hip fractures are common among older women and can have a devastating impact on their ability to remain independent. Many women who were high functioning before the hip fracture do not return to their pre-fracture level of function, have persistent weakness and mobility impairments, and may require ongoing supportive services. Age-associated androgen deficiency may contribute to deficits in muscle mass, strength and power that are common in older female hip fracture patients. The Starting a Testosterone and Exercise Program after Hip Injury (STEP-HI ) Study is a three-group, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled Phase III clinical trial designed to evaluate a multi-modal intervention aimed at improving functional outcomes in older female hip fracture patients. 168 female hip fracture patients, age 65 yrs. and older are being recruited from 6 clinical sites in the USA. Participants are being assigned to one of three groups: supervised exercise (EX) plus 1% testosterone topical gel; EX plus placebo gel; or enhanced usual care. The primary outcome is six-minute walk distance. This symposium will present information related to key aspects of the design of the STEP-HI trial, including recruitment of a frail patient population during a period of injury recovery, the testosterone and exercise interventions and related fidelity procedures, and implementation challenges for this multi-modal intervention prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the underlying mechanisms by which testosterone and exercise are expected to have a synergistic effect on muscle strength and function will be discussed.

Treatment protocols do not specify an appropriate weight for rehabilitating the shoulder joint. The purpose of this study was to establish normative values for the shoulder abduction range of motion and recommended weights to be used in the rehabilitation process after injury to the supraspinatus muscle. Fifty-eight volunteers were assessed using the DyCare system. A test was conducted by lifting the arm to a 90° angle and having the participants lift different weights. The range of motion was similar for both sexes, suggesting that sex had no influence on this variable. Regarding the use of weights, men did not show as much stability in their movement execution, with a high dispersion seen in values between zero and three kilograms of weight, reaching a maximum weight of six kilograms. However, women showed good joint stability from the beginning of the test, with values that remained constant as weight increased up to a maximum of five kilograms. In conclusion, no major differences were observed in supraspinatus muscle injury recovery according to sex. However, differences were observed in the amount of weight that was necessary and appropriate to allow the participants to recover their muscular strength and avoid relapses.

AbstractAcute kidney injury (AKI) is a risk factor for new AKI episodes, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular events and death, as renal repair may be deficient and maladaptive, and activate proinflammatory and profibrotic signals. AKI and AKI recovery definitions are based on changes in plasma creatinine, a parameter mostly associated to glomerular filtration, but largely uncoupled from renal tissue damage. The evolution of structural and functional repair has been incompletely described. We thus aimed at identifying subclinical sequelae persisting after recovery from cisplatin-induced AKI in rats. Compared to controls, after plasma creatinine recovery, post-AKI kidneys showed histological alterations and attendant susceptibility to new AKI episodes. Tubular function (assessed by the furosemide stress test, FST) also remained affected. Lingering parenchymal and functional subclinical alterations were paralleled by tapering, but abnormally high levels of urinary albumin, transferrin, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP7), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2) and, especially, the [TIMP-2]*[IGFBP7] product. As subclinical surrogates of incomplete renal recovery, the FST and the urinary [TIMP-2]*[IGFBP7] product provide two potential diagnostic tools to monitor the sequelae and kidney vulnerability after the apparent recovery from AKI.

Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to cell and tissue impairment, as well as functional deficits. Stem cells promote structural and functional recovery and thus are considered as a promising therapy for various nerve injuries. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of ectoderm-derived frontal bone mesenchymal stem cells (FbMSCs) in promoting cerebral repair and functional recovery in a murine TBI model. FbMSCs showed fibroblast like morphology and osteogenic differentiation capacity. FbMSCs were CD105, CD29 positive and CD45, CD31 negative. Different from mesoderm-derived MSCs, FbMSCs highly expressed ectoderm-specific transcription factor Tfap2β and growth factor FGF1. FbMSC application significantly ameliorated the behavioral deficits of TBI mice and promoted neural regeneration. Immunofluorescence staining and qRT-PCR data revealed that microglial activation and astrocyte polarization to the A1 phenotype were suppressed by FbMSC application. In addition, FGF1 secreted from FbMSCs enhanced glutamate transportation by astrocytes and alleviated the cytotoxic effect of excessive glutamate on neurons. Therefore, MSCs with characteristics of FbMSCs might be good candidates for TBI therapy.

Abstract Neurodevelopmental symptoms (NS) including attention and behavioral problems, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities and learning problems are prevalent in children with burn injuries. The presence of NS may predispose children to poorer burn injury recovery outcomes compared to children without these symptoms (non-NS). The Multi-Center Benchmarking Study (MCBS) monitored recovery outcomes in children with burn injuries in real time utilizing the Burn Outcomes Questionnaire (BOQ). The objective of this study was to retrospectively assess the long term burn recovery outcomes in NS patients versus non-NS patients from the MCBS population. This study assessed parent-reported BOQ outcomes in a sample of 563 patients aged 5 to 18 years who were admitted for burn injuries to a pediatric burn center. A subsample of patients had reported NS (n=181). Analyses compared BOQ outcomes within the NS subsample and the non-NS subsample (n=382) across three longitudinal points post-discharge. The prevalence rate of NS was 32.1% in the full sample. Findings revealed statistically significant improvement in the recovery curves in all five BOQ subscales for the non-NS group and all subscales except for Compliance for the NS group across all longitudinal points. When compared to non-NS patients, NS patients had significantly poorer burn recovery outcomes on the Satisfaction and Compliance subscales. Although it is important to educate all clinicians, parents, and children on burn prevention efforts, targeted education is necessary for children with NS since they may be at greater risk for burn injury as well as worse recovery outcomes.

Athlete’s injury recovery is related to the athlete’s personal value. A scientific and effective rehabilitation program will help athletes overcome their illnesses and return to the game as soon as possible. Based on the literature review and the internal environment perspective, this paper constructs a model of factors affecting athletes’ injury rehabilitation. Through the empirical analysis of 129 questionnaires, we have verified the research hypothesis of each factor. The research results show that psychological adjustment, rehabilitation learning, and video reflection have a significant positive impact on athletes’ injury rehabilitation, while imagery has no significant impact. This research provides a reference plan for athletes to adopt effective injury rehabilitation training methods. At the same time, we have also enriched the research literature on athletes’ injury rehabilitation solutions.
