This present study would like to examine how women are oppressed by the patriarchal society in the selected poems written by one of the contemporary American female writers, Marge Piercy. Marge Piercy is particularly known as a female writer as well as a feminist activist. She has written numerous works, including novels and poetry books, which explore issues about women. Piercy’s poems are mostly known to be simple and vivid.  Observing the use of figurative language and the diction in Piercy’s selected poems, entitled “A Work of Artifice” and  “Barbie Doll”, in the light of feminist criticism,  this article would like to show how oppression is done towards women and how it results in the silencing, shaping, and subordinating of women. In the poems, the oppression is mostly operated subtly and systematically through various cultural institutions, such as education, family, and media. Women, as a result, are trained to believe in the voice of the patriarchal society and to behave following what the patriarchal society demands. The long-practiced oppression has hindered women to develop to their fullest as human beings. The poems can be read as a medium to voice women’s experiences and to criticize the established patriarchal system and its oppression towards women.

This paper addresses issues about how the Barbie doll can provide an unrealistic vision of how women should look and what marketers can do about it. Barbie is a well-known doll that has become a role model for girls. However,  Barbie dolls have attracted much criticism. Studies found that Barbie shapes the body image of young girls and possibly creates body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem among girls. Body dissatisfaction can lead to eating disorders and low self-esteem can lead to depressive behavior. Answering that phenomenon, Barbie launched Barbie Fashionista that has a diverse body type. However, Girls still tend to choose thinner Barbie. Barbie’s marketer should encourage girls to play more with a more realistic body image Barbie such as curvy, tall, and petite, and encourage the children to feel good about their bodies.

Even though the content received positive and negative comments from followers, Kumalasari was able to gain popularity. In fact, she was given the title “Ratu Halu” because she identified herself with a Barbie doll as a form of strong personal brand. The personal brand that is attached to Kumalasari is a unique and different identity in the minds of followers, society, and media, which leads to the creation of popularity. In this study, the authors interpreted the new concept of Kumalasari as a 'Halu Barbie'

The effective facilitation of discourses about diverse youth literature (DYL) is dependent on teachers' application of vital instructional approaches. This has implications for how pre-service teachers (PSTs) are prepared to involve their students in relevant dialogues that critically examine how DYL mirror authentic life experiences. Hence, the author undertook this action research to execute a methodology model which illustrated instructional processes that may be employed in training PSTs to make conscious decisions about planning, designing, and guiding discussions in a lesson. The participants were 20 PSTs who pursued a literature methods course at a teacher training institution in Jamaica, and studied the texts “Bright Thursdays” by Olive Senior and “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy. The application of the model provided insights into the benefits and considerations for training PSTs to practice how to facilitate discussions about DYL during lessons and how to use their literature classes as opportunities for developing social responsibility among their students.

This research was done to check the influence of Barbie movies among youth. As most of the time the portrayal of women, even in the face of Barbie is feeble, submissive, oppressed and dependent. Feminism and the presentation of women is a vast perspective. The study revealed that there is women empowerment through Barbie movies and Barbie and women itself is not a symbol of sexism but a pronounced and considerable character of our life with broader ascendancy. For all the three questions of women empowerment the total percentage were more towards agreement i.e.; 45%, moderate 26%, disagree 13%, strongly agree 7.6%, while strongly disagree 5.3%. Youth is leaner towards its positive aspect rather than negativity. Some other aspects like, content analysis of those Barbie movies can be done, which are presenting more independent and empowered Barbies, or scenes can analyze that content is related to feminism.
