ABSTRACT The hospital stay of children is unfortunately common and is associated with regression in behaviors, aggression, lack of cooperation, withdrawal, difficulty in recovering, excessive crying, and decreased communication and / or activity, so The nursing care process needs not only a biological perspective, but also includes the psychological and social spheres. The role of the nursing staff, being the main care references within the healthcare context, is essential since they are perceived as the greatest source of support and information from parents and patients. The document provides some guidelines, aimed at health personnel, to increase comprehensive well-being through concrete and easy-to-implement actions. Keywords: hospitalization, nursing staff, humanization of care.

Cancer remains a major public health threat. The mitigation of the associated morbidity and mortality remains a major research focus. From a molecular biological perspective, cancer is defined as uncontrolled cell division and abnormal cell growth caused by various gene mutations. Therefore, there remains an urgent need to develop safe and effective antitumor drugs. The antitumor effect of plant extracts, which are characterized by relatively low toxicity and adverse effect, has attracted significant attention. For example, increasing attention has been paid to the antitumor effects of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), the active component of the Chinese medicine Chuanqiong, which can affect tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis, as well as reverse chemotherapeutic resistance in neoplasms, thereby triggering antitumor effects. Moreover, TMP can be used in combination with chemotherapeutic agents to enhance their effects and reduce the side effect associated with chemotherapy. Herein, we review the antitumor effects of TMP to provide a theoretical basis and foundation for the further exploration of its underlying antitumor mechanisms and promoting its clinical application.

Many biological functions allow for grades. For example, secretion of a specific hormone in an organism can be on a higher or lower level, compared to the same organism at another occasion or compared to other organisms. What levels of functioning constitute instances of dysfunction; where should we draw the line? This is the quantitative problem for theories of dysfunction and disease. I aim to defend a version of biological theories of dysfunction to tackle this problem. However, I will also allow evaluative considerations to enter into a theory of disease. My argument is based on a distinction between a biological and a clinical perspective. Disease, according to my reasoning, is restricted to instances that fall within the boundaries of biological dysfunctions. Responding to the quantitative problem does not require arbitrary decisions or social value-judgements. Hence, I argue for a non-arbitrary, fact-based method to address the quantitative problem. Still, not all biological dysfunctions are instances of disease. Adding a clinical perspective allows us to prevent the potential over-inclusiveness of the biological perspective, because it restricts the boundaries of disease even further.

AbstractThis article is the first one to offer an investigation, from a biological perspective, of “natural philia” or “kin-based” philia (commonly translated as “friendship”) in Aristotle’s practical philosophy. After some preliminary considerations about its place in Aristotle’s ethical treatises, the discussion focuses on Aristotle’s biology. Here we learn that natural philia, couched in terms of a biological praxis rather than a trait of character, is widespread in the animal kingdom, although in different ways and to varying degrees. To account for such differences, Aristotle establishes a Scala Philiae in two different biological texts—Historia Animalium and Generation of Animals—where natural bonds in animals are classified in view of their strength and duration. Each level of Aristotle’s Scala is examined. Finally, the argument returns to Aristotle’s ethical and political texts, drawing greater attention to the biological mechanisms that underlie natural philia in human beings. I conclude that natural philia provides one fundamental biological building-block of Aristotle’s ethics and politics.

The aim of this article is to characterize the cognitive development of a preschool child on the basis of selected theoretical concepts in relation to moderate and severe intellectual disability. These considerations will serve as a guideline for further theoretical analyses and practical activities supporting the development of children with intellectual disabilities. From a biological perspective, intellectual disability is a typical medical problem. In the developmental context, it means “a failure in the process of development” (Kościelska 1995; Speck, 2015). I assume that the determinant for planning and implementing the content, forms and methods of teaching in special kindergarten should be the level of cognitive development of each child. In the study I refer to selected concepts of development in the terms of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, which, as I assume, can be a field for analysis of the development of children who require multi-profile support.

From a biological perspective, ageing is generally considered as a downhill phase of life, with a progressive decline in physiological functionality and an increase in the chances of chronic diseases and death. The onset of this phase of life does not start with birth because the early phase of life is a constructive phase of growth, development, maturation, and reproduction. Ageing sets in and happens progressively, exponentially, and intrinsically in the period of survival beyond the naturally evolved essential lifespan of a species. Ageing can be defined as a progressive shrinkage of the homeodynamic space having the fundamental characteristics of stress tolerance, damage control, and constant remodelling. Biologically successful ageing thus implies maintaining, recovering, or even enhancing those abilities that support survival and health in the framework of homeodynamic space.

AbstractWhen clonal plasma cells grow at anatomic sites distant from the bone marrow or grows contiguous from osseous lesions that break through the cortical bone, it is referred to as extramedullary multiple myeloma (EMD). EMD remains challenging from a therapeutic and biological perspective. The pathogenetic mechanisms are not completely understood and it is generally associated with high-risk cytogenetics which portends poor outcomes. There is a rising incidence of EMD in the era of novel agents, likely a reflection of longer OS, with no standard treatment approach. Patients benefit from aggressive chemotherapy-based approaches, but the OS and prognosis remains poor. RT has been used for palliative care. There is a need for large prospective trials for development of treatment approaches for treatment of EMD.
