A viscoelastic model is proposed in this approach to determine the sound transmission loss coefficient of a sandwich shell system with double curvature. The structure is composed of a double-walled composite shell subjected to a viscoelastic core. Investigating the efficient impresses of rotary inertia and shear deformation, vibration equations of both outer and inner shells are extracted within the framework of shear deformation shallow shell theory. Besides, the Zener mathematical model is used for viscoelastic material, which is based on a spring connected in series with a parallel mixture of spring and dashpot. This model presents the dynamic response in the whole frequency domain at which shear modulus and bulk complex modulus are frequency dependent. Since the performed studies on the sound transmission loss of this kind of structures are insignificant, the outcomes of plate models with a viscoelastic core are used to provide a reliable sound transmission loss comparison. The results show that the applied strategy can improve the acoustic characteristics of the system at high frequencies compared to that of a single-layer one with the same mass. This issue is more highlighted while the thickness of the viscoelastic layer enhances, which confirms the positive performance of the viscoelastic materials in this range of frequency, particularly in the resonant frequency. In addition to the curvature effect on acoustic features, the vibration response of the system is configured based on various frequencies and materials.

In the present work, the nonlinear vibration behavior of elastic-viscoelastic-elastic sandwich (EVES) beams is studied. A finite element (FE) equation taking intoaccount the transverse compression deformation of the viscoelastic core for the EVES beams is derived. In order toaccurately characterize the frequency-dependent feature of the viscoelastic materials layer, athird-order seven-parameter Biot model isused. A 2-node 8-DOF element is established to discretize the EVES beams. The experimental testing onEVES beams validates the numerical predication of the FE model. Numerical and analytical investigations are carried on a series of EVES beams with different thicknesses. The results indicate that the presented FE model has better accuracy in predicting the natural frequency of the sandwich beams, and in predicting damping, the accuracy is related to the thickness of each layer. The results of this paper have important reference values for the design and optimization of the viscoelastic sandwich structure.

The current study presents a vibration investigation of a laminated plate considering a viscoelastic core with embedded magnetostrictive layers. The simply-supported plate is supported via Pasternak’s substrate medium. Based on different plate theories and employing Hamilton’s principle, the system of governing differential equations is derived. The mechanical properties of the viscoelastic core are described depend on the time varies based on Kelvin–Voigt model. Actuating magnetostrictive layers are utilized to control the vibration damping process of the system with the assistance of feedback and constant gain distributed control. The analytical solution is obtained to investigate the influence of half wave numbers, thickness ratios, core thickness, aspect ratios, lamination schemes, elastic foundation parameters, damping coefficient, feedback coefficient magnitude, magnetostrictive layers location, on the vibrational behavior of laminated plate. Some observations about the vibration damping process of the present plate are displayed. The results refer to that the vibration suppression rate depends on the thickness of the plate, the feedback control value, the foundation constants, and the viscoelastic structural damping significantly. Moreover, the study can be providing benchmark tests to validate future contributions on the viscoelastic smart structural issues and developing the design of smart viscoelastic structures and control of their vibrations.

This work presents a finite-element-based numerical formulation to evaluate the nonlinear deflections of magneto-electro-elastic sandwich skew plates with a viscoelastic core and functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced magneto-electro-elastic face sheets. Meanwhile, the proposed formulation accommodates the geometrical skewness as well. The magneto-electro-elastic sandwich skew plate is operated in the thermal environment and subjected to various multiphysics loads, including electric and magnetic loads. The viscoelastic core is modelled via the complex modulus approach. Two different forms of viscoelastic cores, such as Dyad 606 and EC 2216, are considered in this study. Also, different thickness configurations of core and facing arrangements are taken into account. The plate kinematics is presumed through higher-order shear deformation theory, and von Karman's nonlinear strain displacement relations are incorporated. The global equations of motion are arrived at through the total potential energy principle and solved via the direct iterative method. Special attention is paid to assessing the influence of pyroeffects, coupling fields and electromagnetic boundary conditions on the nonlinear deflections of magneto-electro-elastic sandwich plates working in the thermal environment and subjected to electromagnetic loads, which is the first of its kind. Also, parametric studies dealing with the skew angles, carbon nanotube distributions and volume fractions, thickness ratio, and aspect ratio have been discussed. The results of this work are believed to be unique and serve as a guide for the design engineers towards developing sophisticated smart structures for various engineering applications.
