We study a scheme of thermal management where a three-qubit system assisted with a coherent auxiliary bath (CAB) is employed to implement heat management on a target thermal bath (TTB). We consider the CAB/TTB being ensemble of coherent/thermal two-level atoms (TLAs), and within the framework of collision model investigate the characteristics of steady heat current (also called target heat current (THC)) between the system and the TTB. It demonstrates that with the help of the quantum coherence of ancillae the magnitude and direction of heat current can be controlled only by adjusting the coupling strength of system-CAB. Meanwhile, we also show that the influences of quantum coherence of ancillae on the heat current strongly depend on the coupling strength of system—CAB, and the THC becomes positively/negatively correlated with the coherence magnitude of ancillae when the coupling strength below/over some critical value. Besides, the system with the CAB could serve as a multifunctional device integrating the thermal functions of heat amplifier, suppressor, switcher and refrigerator, while with thermal auxiliary bath it can only work as a thermal suppressor. Our work provides a new perspective for the design of multifunctional thermal device utilizing the resource of quantum coherence from the CAB.

Soft bioelectronic systems with a unique mechanical property, namely modulus matching between human skin (or tissue) and the device, have gained widespread attention. This is because of their closed-loop strain-insensitive electrical performance ranging from application in the long-term stable measurements of physiological signals and feedback modulation to human skin (or organs). Various materials and integration/fabrication strategies such as buckled, rigid islands, and wavy designs addressed for soft bioelectronic systems require complex device fabrication with time-consuming packaging and integration processes. In this study, we developed a soft bio-integrated multifunctional device (SBMD) fabricated through the simple thermal evaporation and transfer processes. The intrinsically stretchable Au–SEBS film composed of thermally evaporated gold (Au) nanomembranes and an elastomeric substrate was applied to various functional modules that are capable of sensing the strain (up to ~300%), temperature (with a thermal sensitivity of ~0.6 Ω/°C), chemicals (at a concentration of NaCl of~0.5 wt%), and even electrophysiological cardiac/muscle signals and showing thermal actuations (80 °C at 9 V). Specifically, such multifunctions of the SBMD were stably performed even on skin. Thus, we believe the SBMD would be a promising candidate for realizing soft bioelectronic systems.

The purpose of the research is to substantiate the technology and process parameters of protein-vitamin products of liquid and xerogel physical form. Object of research: the process of preparing a substitute for dairy feed in the form of a protein-vitamin extract for young farm animals using a multifunctional device in the form of a chopper-extractor-separator (CES) – three-module design. The authors of the article developed a hardware and technological scheme for the production of a substitute for dairy feed (SDF) and mixed feed concentrates (FC) based on a soy - root raw material composition. The dependences that characterize the work of the grinding and extraction device on the processes of grinding soy-root raw material composition, extracting nutrients from it into an aqueous medium and separating the pulp residue from the substitute for dairy feed are established. The technology of obtaining innovative products in the form of a substitute for dairy feed – feed concentrates based on soy-root raw material composition is justified. AbstractThe insect leg is a multifunctional device, varying tremendously in form and function within Insecta: from a common walking leg, to burrowing, swimming or jumping devices, up to spinning apparatuses or tools for prey capturing. Raptorial forelegs, as predatory striking and grasping devices, represent a prominent example for convergent evolution within insects showing strong morphological and behavioural adaptations for a lifestyle as an ambush predator. However, apart from praying mantises (Mantodea)—the most prominent example of this lifestyle—the knowledge on morphology, anatomy, and the functionality of insect raptorial forelegs, in general, is scarce. Here, we show a detailed morphological description of raptorial forelegs ofMantispa styriaca(Neuroptera), including musculature and the material composition in their cuticle; further, we will discuss the mechanism of the predatory strike. We could confirm all 15 muscles previously described for mantis lacewings, regarding extrinsic and intrinsic musculature, expanding it for one important new muscle—M24c. Combining the information from all of our results, we were able to identify a possible catapult mechanism (latch-mediated spring actuation system) as a driving force of the predatory strike, never proposed for mantis lacewings before. Our results lead to a better understanding of the biomechanical aspects of the predatory strike in Mantispidae. This study further represents a starting point for a comprehensive biomechanical investigation of the convergently evolved raptorial forelegs in insects.

Objectives Venous crural ulcer is a serious medical problem indeed, which is connected with patients’ suffering and long term treatment generating high cost. The prognosis is unfavourable in many cases, as complete treatment of ulceration, when it is profound or really extensive is difficult to achieve, and sometimes impossible altogether. The aim of the study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of treatment of venous crural ulcers with the use of multifunctional device LASEROBARIA–S, designed for combined physical therapy procedures. Method 147 succeeding patients (67 women and 80 men) diagnosed with venous crural ulcer participated in the study, with age varied between 41 and 79 years (average age – 70.2 years). The patients underwent a 60 day cycle of combined physical therapy, with the use of multifunctional device LASEROBARIA–S, during which therapy the lower extremity of the patient was placed in the therapeutic chamber and simultaneously subjected to the action of: local oxygen hyperbaria, low-frequency variable magnetic field and low energy light radiation emitted by semiconductor LED diodes. Prior to the therapeutic cycle and after its completion, planimetric measurements of the area of ulcer and the assessment of pain intensity with use of VAS scale were performed, in relation to selected factors potentially affecting therapeutic effects of applied therapy, as: sex and age of patients, as well as initial size of the ulcer and duration of the ulcer presence. Results After the completion of therapeutic cycle, statistically significant reduction of the area of treated ulcer was found, by 5.4 cm2 on the average (16.3 cm2 vs 10.5 cm2) (p < 0.05). Moreover, as a result of the combined therapy procedures performed, the statistically significant lowering of the intensity of pain sensation experienced by patients, assessed by means of VAS scale, was obtained (2.55 points vs 0.48 points) (p < 0.05). The obtained improvement was not dependent statistically significantly on any of analysed selected factors potentially affecting regenerative and analgesic effect of applied therapy. Conclusions The application of combined physical therapy with the use of LASEROBARIA–S device results in significant reduction of the area of the venous crural ulcer surface, as well as reduction of the intensity of accompanying pain complaints and this therapeutic effect was not dependent on sex and age of patients, as well as initial size of the ulcer and duration of the ulcer presence.
