Trichinellosis is a worldwide zoonotic food-borne disease that causes public health problems. The present study investigated the role of domestic ducks (Muscovy) and catfish (Clarias lazera) in transmitting Trichinella spiralis infection in Egypt. Ducks, fish, and rats were inoculated by high doses of Trichinella spiralis (T. Spiralis) larvae in naturally infected muscles of pigs and by free larvae extracted from artificial digestion. Both methods failed to develop an infection in ducks. No worms or cysts could be detected in ducks slaughtered 10, 25, and 45 days after inoculation. Moreover, there was no significant increase in the mean ELISA optical density (OD) value, compared to the control non-inoculated ducks. Inoculation of fish resulted in a significant increase in the mean ELISA OD value, compared to the control non-inoculated fish. This elevation was associated with the temporary detection of a few adult worms in the intestine of these fish which decreased with time till disappeared 45 days after inoculation but a non-significant increase was observed, compared to that obtained in the inoculated rats at the same stages. A large number of T. spiralis adult worms and cysts associated with a significant increase in the mean ELISA OD were recorded in the inoculated rats. Infection of rats (xenodiagnosis) by muscles collected from the inoculated ducks or fish failed to induce infection or elevation in the level of anti-T. spiralis antibodies (ATs-Ab) in their sera. In conclusion, Muscovy ducks and Clarias lazera could not be infected by T. spiralis in their muscles and the consumption of their meat could not transmit this infection to consumers in Egypt. However, proper cooking of meat is still necessary to avoid infection with other species.

Trichinellosis in a zoonotic parasitism of worldwide distribution caused by nematodes of the genus Trichinella. Argentina is considered an endemic country for this zoonosis and so far four species have been identified, spiralis, patagoniensis, britovi and pseudospiralis. It can affect both domestic animals such as pigs, dogs, horses, or wild animals such as cougars, armadillos, wild boars, and wild pigs. With the aim of knowing if any species of Trichinella circulates among the wild fauna of the province of Santa Fe, 22 samples of muscle from pigs between wild and wild boars were analyzed by Artificial Digestion, five from aguará guazú (Chrysocyon brachiurus), one of cat wild (Leopardus geoffroyi), one of weasel (Didelphis albiventris) and one of an equine (Equus caballus). All samples were negative.

The occurrence of health-relevant contaminants in water has become a severe global problem. For treating heavy-metal-polluted water, the use of zeolite materials has been extended over the last decades, due to their excellent features of high ion exchange capacity and absorbency. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of heavy metal uptake of one purified (PCT) and two non-purified clinoptilolite tuffs (NPCT1 and NPCT2) in aqueous solutions on monovalent ions Ni+, Cd+, Cs+, Ba+, Tl+, and Pb+. Experiments were furthermore carried out in artificial gastric and intestinal fluids to mimic human digestion and compare removal efficiencies of the adsorbent materials as well as release characteristics in synthetic gastric (SGF) and intestinal fluids (SIF). Batch experiments show low sorption capacities for Ni+ and Cd+ for all studied materials; highest affinities were found for Ba+ (99–100%), Pb+ (98–100%), Cs+ (97–98%), and Tl+ (96%), depending on the experimental setup for the PCT. For the adsorption experiments with SGF, highest adsorption was observed for the PCT for Pb+, with an uptake of 99% of the lead content. During artificial digestion, it was proven that the PCT did not release Ba+ cations into solution, whereas 13574 ng·g−1 and 4839 ng·g−1 of Ba+ were measured in the solutions with NPCT1 and NPCT2, respectively. It was demonstrated that the purified clinoptilolite tuff is most effective in remediating heavy-metal-polluted water, particularly during artificial digestion (99% of Pb+, 95% of Tl+, 93% of Ba+). In addition, it was shown that the released amount of bound heavy metal ions (e.g., barium) from the non-purified clinoptilolite tuffs into the intestinal fluids was significantly higher compared to the purified product.

Abstract Recently, there have been more reports and concerns about microplastics from various media and journals in the world. Except for land and water pollutions, much attention has been given to the impact of microplastics on animal and human health. However, previous studies have shown that digestion could not affect the particles of various microplastics due to their stable behavior. This work focuses on the impact of artificial digestion on the surface microstructures of microplastics from well recognized popular sources such as PP, PE, PET, PS and PVC. SEM and AFM were used to study the impact of artificial digestion on the surface morphologies of microplastics; while ATR-FTIR and XPS were used to investigate the impact of artificial digestion on the chemical properties of the surface of the microplastics. There were no physical differences observed by both SEM and AFM. There were no significant chemical differences detected by both FTIR and XPS after treatment. The slight differences of resolved C1s spectra for PS and PET samples detected by XPS should be further investigated. The study results show that the digestion system could not decompose the microplastics. Generally, plastic particles are widely considered to be inert due to their low chemical reactivity.

Summary The European polecat (Mustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758) is in decline in Romania, often living near human settlements, from mountains to lowlands. They feed on a wide variety of small animals, including rodents, such as mice or rats. The occurrence of this parasite in polecats from Romania was mentioned only once in 1991, but the parasite species was not confirmed by molecular biology. The study aimed to investigate the occurrence of Trichinella spp. in European polecats from Romania and to identify the parasite species by molecular tools. A total of 75 wild European polecats were examined by trichinoscopy and artificial digestion. A large number of animals were examined because of their wide distribution in Romanian territory and their presence near human settlements. For species determination, the positive muscle samples and the larvae recovered from artificial digestion were collected for DNA isolation and further processed by means of Multiplex PCR. Only two polecats from southern Romania tested positive for Trichinella spp. infection. During trichinoscopy examination, 48 (in a polecat from Giurgiu County) and 78 (in a polecat from Ialomița County) cysts were found in the tested (56 samples/animal) tissue samples. Artificial digestion revealed infection with 2466 larvae/100 g of muscle in the polecat from Ialomița and 254/100 g in the polecat from Giurgiu. The Multiplex PCR indicated the occurrence of Trichinella spiralis in the polecat from Giurgiu and a co-infection with T. spiralis and T. britovi in the polecat from Ialomița. The current study confirms through molecular biology, the occurrence of T. spiralis and T. britovi, as well as the occurrence of co-infection with these two Trichinella species in European polecats from Romania.

The infection status of zoonotic trematode metacercariae (ZTM) was investigated in total 568 freshwater fishes (19 species) from the irrigation canal of Togyo-jeosuji (Reservoir) in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, the Republic of Korea for 3 years (2018-2020). All fishes were examined using the artificial digestion method. The metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis (CsMc) were detected in 180 (43.8%) out of 411 fish of positive species, and their infection intensity was 38 per fish infected (PFI). Especially, in 2 fish species, i.e., Pseudorasbora parva and Puntungia herzi, the prevalence was 82.1% and 31.3%, and the infection intensity with CsMc was 88 and 290 PFI, respectively. Metagonimus spp. metacercariae (MsMc) were found in 403 (74.1%) out of 544 fish of positive species, and their infection intensity was 62 PFI. In the pale chub, Zacco platypus, the prevalence of MsMc was 98.6%, and their infection intensity was 144 PFI. Centrocestus armatus metacercariae were detected in 171 (38.9%) out of 440 fish of positive species, and their infection intensity was 1,844 PFI. Echinostoma spp. metacercariae were found in 94 (19.6%) out of 479 fish of positive species, and their infection intensity was 3 PFI. Metorchis orientalis metacercariae were detected in 43 (29.3%) out of 147 fish of positive species, and their infection intensity was 4 PFI. By the present study, it has been confirmed that some species of ZTM, including CsMc and MsMc, are prevalent in fishes from the irrigation canal of Togyo-jeosuji in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of model (alcohol, sugar, salt, protein and acid) and real foods and beverages on the viability of probiotics during incubation and artificial digestion. Viability of monocultures Lactobacillus acidophilus CCM4833 and Bifidobacterium breve CCM7825T, and a commercial mixture of 9 probiotic bacterial strains, was tested by cultivation assay and flow cytometry. In model foods, the best viability was determined in the presence of 0.2 g/L glucose, 10% albumin and 10% ethanol. As the most suitable real food for probiotic survival, complex protein and carbohydrate substrates were found, such as beef broth, potato salad with pork, chicken with rice, chocolate spread, porridge and yoghurt. The best liquid was milk and meat broth, followed by Coca-Cola, beer and coffee. Viability of probiotics was higher when consumed with meals than with beverages only. Addition of prebiotics increased the viability of probiotics, especially in presence of instant and fast foods. Generally, the highest viability of probiotics during artificial digestion was observed in mixed culture in the presence of protein, sugar and fat, or their combination. The increase of cell viability observed in such foods during model digestion may further contribute to the positive effect of probiotics on human health.

We surveyed on the infection status of zoonotic trematode metacercariae (ZTM) in freshwater fishes from Soyang-cheon (a branch stream of Mangyeong-gang) in Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, the Republic of Korea. A total of 927 fishes were individually examined with the artificial digestion method during 2013-2015 (462 fish in 15 spp.) and 2018-2019 (465 fish in 25 spp.). Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae were detected in 207 (31.4%) out of 659 fishes in 14 positive fish species (PFS), and their mean intensity was 114 per fish infected (PFI). Metagonimus spp. metacercariae were found in 302 (37.4%) out of 808 fishes in 21 PFS, and their mean intensity was 12 PFI. Centrocestus armatus metacercariae were detected in 222 (59.0%) out of 376 fishes in 12 PFS, and their mean intensity was 383 PFI. Echinostoma spp. metacercariae were found in 139 (22.1%) out of 628 fishes in 10 PFS, and their mean intensity was 7 PFI. Clinostomum complanatum metacercariae were detected in 14 (6.5%) out of 214 fishes in 4 PFS, and their mean intensity was 2.4 PFI. Metorchis orientalis metacercariae were detected in 36 (13.5%) out of 267 fishes in 5 PFS, and their mean intensity was 4.3 PFI. Conclusively, the prevalence and infection intensity of ZTM is generally not so high in fishes from Soyang-cheon. However, those of C. sinensis metacercariae are more or less higher in 2 fish species, Pungtungia herzi and Sarcocheilichthys variegatus wakiyae.
