AbstractThe aim of this study was to build the discriminative models for distinguishing the different cultivars of flesh of pumpkin ‘Bambino’, ‘Butternut’, ‘Uchiki Kuri’ and ‘Orange’ based on selected textures of the outer surface of images of cubes. The novelty of research involved the use of about 2000 different textures for one image. The highest total accuracy (98%) of discrimination of pumpkin ‘Bambino’, ‘Butternut’, ‘Uchiki Kuri’ and ‘Orange’ was determined for models built based on textures selected from the color space Lab and the IBk classifier and some of the individual cultivars were classified with the correctness of 100%. The total accuracy of up to 96% was observed for color space RGB and 97.5% for color space XYZ. In the case of color channels, the total accuracies reached 91% for channel b, 89.5% for channel X, 89% for channel Z.

Abstract Background The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a serious threat to date palms across the globe, causing heavy yield losses. The pest inflicts damage to palms stem and destroys vascular system; resultantly lower the vigor and affect the growth and yield. For ecological farming system, biological control of the pest is gaining increased interest due to hosts’ specificity, safety to human, animal and non-target organisms, and their compatibility to environment. Results In laboratory assay, Beauveria bassiana, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt-k) alone and in combination against sixth instar larvae and adults of four distinct populations of RPW were applied. H. bacteriophora was more effective, followed by B. bassiana and Bt-k in alone treatments. While in combined treatments, the highest mortality was recorded for H. bacteriophora + B. bassiana combination (100% for both stages), followed by H. bacteriophora + Bt-k, (larvae 100%; adults 94.24%) and B. bassiana + Bt-k treatments (larvae: 87.01%; adults: 80.53%). Maximum rate of mycosis (larvae 85.74%; adults 69.07%), sporulation (larvae 189.22 conidia ml−1; adults 164.56 conidia ml−1), cadavers affected by nematodes (larvae 92.4%; adults 81.29%) and nematode production (larvae 178.78 IJs ml−1; adults 153.44 IJs ml−1) was observed where B. bassiana or H. bacteriophora was applied alone and the lowest (larvae 122.78 IJs ml−1; adults: 103.22 IJs ml−1) was recorded for H. bacteriophora + B. bassiana combination. Conclusions Entomopathogens can be effectively used alone and/or in integration to control RPW populations. Natural capability of entomopathogens to infect and disseminate into other hosts makes them excellent biocontrol agents to be incorporated in the IPM plan of RPW and to make palm growers confident with the use of the most promising microbial control agents.

Since Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (IAHS) were launched by the FAO to protect the sustainable traditional agricultural systems around the world, their conservation has become a new difficult issue under the context of urbanization. Farmers in IAHS sites giving up small-scale traditional farming due to their low economic benefit and high labor intensity are considered as the main cause hindering effective conservation of these heritages. This study takes the Kuancheng traditional chestnut cultivation system (KTCCS) in northern China as a case to assess its economic and socio-cultural sustainability. Based on questionnaires and interviews, this study found that: the traditional ecological farming methods were still used by local farming households to plant chestnut trees; and most farmers support IAHS conservation. KTCCS performs economic and socio-cultural sustainability. For a household, the labor productivity of chestnut cultivation was 1.33 times that of their non-farm jobs because of the low labor input of chestnut cultivation. Farmers widely consider they live in a harmonious social environment but are lower than other households in economic status. Most farmers still lack an understanding of indigenous traditional knowledge and cultures. In the future, secondary and tertiary industries should be developed to provide farmers with employment opportunities in their hometowns for protecting KTCCS.

ABSTRACT Agro-ecological farming and conventional farming are two methods to food production. The word ‘agro-ecological farming’ refers to a diversity of agricultural methods that seek to provide food by using available natural and local resources rather than off-farm inputs that is sustainable, socially and environmentally acceptable. Recent debate about the advantages of agro-ecological farming over conventional systems has centred on each method’s capability to increase output in the background of several and diverse biophysical and social limitations. An appraisal of the literature suggests that agro-ecological farming can offer some benefits to small-scale farmers, but that precise methods must be tailored to soil-climatic conditions, local climate, labour availability, training as well as organic inputs availability.

The subject literature around the world puts a strong emphasis on the discrepancy between the positive attitude towards the idea of sustainability and consumer behaviour. These issues are the subject matter of this paper, which aims at both the identification and evaluation of selected aspects of knowledge, attitudes and eco-friendly behaviour of consumers connected with their choice of foods. The authors made an attempt of answering the question, to what extent do the level of knowledge and the declared eco-friendly attitudes have an impact on specific purchasing decisions. In the empirical observations, the conceptual model of the effects of the environment (knowledge, attitude, behaviour) on the customers’ ecological awareness was used. The analysis conducted on the basis of this model indicated that stimulating the demand for ecological products is implemented mainly by the processes of raising awareness, which leads to expanding the consumers’ knowledge concerning ecological farming and eco-friendly foods. In such a way the consumer awareness is built, especially by educational campaigns and promoting/endorsing the ecological foods targeted at young consumers.

Nonthermal plasma (NTP), or cold plasma, has shown many advantages in the agriculture sector as it enables removal of pesticides and contaminants from the seed surface, increases shelf life of crops, improves germination and resistance to abiotic stress. Recent studies show that plasma treatment indeed offers unique and environmentally friendly processing of different seeds, such as wheat, beans, corn, soybeans, barley, peanuts, rice and Arabidopsis thaliana, which could reduce the use of agricultural chemicals and has a high potential in ecological farming. This review covers the main concepts and underlying principles of plasma treatment techniques and their interaction with seeds. Different plasma generation methods and setups are presented and the influence of plasma treatment on DNA damage, gene expression, enzymatic activity, morphological and chemical changes, germination and resistance to stress, is explained. Important plasma treatment parameters and interactions of plasma species with the seed surface are presented and critically discussed in correlation with recent advances in this field. Although plasma agriculture is a relatively new field of research, and the complex mechanisms of interactions are not fully understood, it holds great promise for the future. This overview aims to present the advantages and limitations of different nonthermal plasma setups and discuss their possible future applications.
