Sea urchin (Echinometra mathaei) is one of the marine biota that contains high flavonoid and phenolic compounds that are potent as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. This study aimed to measure the anti-inflammatory activity of the 70% ethanol extract of sea urchins in male white rats induced by carrageenan. Anti-inflammatory activity test using 5 groups of rats selected randomly, each group consists of 5 rats. Negative control group, positive control group, and 3 groups of extracts (doses of 100, 200, and 400mg/kgBW). Each group was induced using 1% carrageenan subplantarly and the volume of edema was measured using a mercury plethysmometer every 30 minutes for 3 hours. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way Anova. The results showed that the percentage of inflammatory inhibition in the positive control group, and the Echinometra mathaei ethanol extract group (dose of 100, 200, and 400 mg/KgBW) showed a significant difference (P0.05) with the negative control group with a percentage value of Inflammation inhibition was 61.11%, 85.19%, 85.19%, and 74.07%, respectively. The administration of sea urchin ethanol extract at all doses had a higher percentage of anti-inflammatory than diclofenac sodium, but increasing the extract dose did not significant increase inflammatory inhibition. This research concluded that 70% ethanol extract of Echinometra mathaei at doses of 100, 200, 400 mg/KgBW has strong anti-inflammatory activity potential.

Abstract : Sea urchin (Echinometra mathaei) contains a compound of Echinochrome A, which is a polyhydroxy naphthoquinone that is known to be potential antioxidant. The antioxidant effect correlated with the antidiabetic activity that associated with oxidative stress conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 70% Ethanol Extract of sea urchin (Echinometra mathaei) on blood glucose levels in alloxan induced rats. This research was an experimental study using 30 male white rats, divided into 6 groups, i.e the negative control group (normal rat were only given CMC Na 0,5%), Positive control group (hyperglycemic rats were only treated with CMC Na 0,5%), metformin group as a refference standard group (hyperglycemic rats that treated with metformin) and the treatment group (hyperglycemic rats were treated with ethanol extract 70% of Echinometra mathaei dose of 100 mg/kgBW, 200 mg/kgBW and 400 mg/kgBW). Alloxan monohidrat 120 mg/KgBW was used as diabetogen agent. The parameters examined in this study were blood glucose levels of rats after 7 days of treatment. The observational data were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA (P < 0.05) and continued with LSD. The results of this study showed that all doses of ethanol extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels in rats compared to the control group. The most effective dose in reducing blood glucose levels and compared to metformin was 400 mg / kgBW. Key word: alloxan induced, Echinometra mathaei, ethanol 70%, hiperglycemia, marine product.

Echinometra mathaei sea urchins are known to contain chemical compounds that can be used to overcome health problems, one of which has antioxidant activity. Some previous studies have explained the benefits of sea urchins but to ensure the quality assurance of sea urchins extracts, efforts should be made to determine the quality standards of sea urchins extract. This study aims to standardize specific parameters and non-specific parameters on Echinometra mathaei sea urchins extract to ensure the quality of 96% ethanol extract. Samples were obtained from Rongkang Beach, Kwanyar District, Bangkalan District, Madura which were then extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. The results of the study for specific parameters showed that organoleptically and macroscopically the extracts were thick, blackish brown in color and characteristic of sea urchins; levels of dissolved compounds in ethanol of 78.37%; levels of dissolved compounds in water of 93.09%; and chemical content tests showed that the extract contained steroid compounds, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids and terpenoids. Determination of non-specific parameters showed that Echinometra mathaei sea urchin extract had a drying shrinkage of 3.03%; specific gravity of 0.8411 g/mL; water content of 5.32%; Pb heavy metal contamination was 7.28 mg/kg, Cd was <0.0024 mg/kg, Hg was <0.0002 mg / kg, Mg was 347.83 mg / kg; microbial contamination of <10 colonies / mL; and yeast mold contamination of <10 colonies/mL. The conclusion is Echinometra mathaei sea urchin extract has the potential to be developed into a medicinal preparation. Echinoidea has found in many marine defferences. This invertebrates were usually live in individualisia or in groups. They are live in rough substrate like rock and coastal but there are small group of  echinoidea has live in sandy and muddy subtrate. The purpose of  this research was to obtain the diversity ofechinoideain pulau merah shore Banyuwangi this research has been done in july 2016. This research used transek quadrat methode, divide 3 station. Station 1 lie down in side bouder of cea water, station 2 lie down in the middle of sea water and station 3 lie down prorude from sea water. In each station divide in 3 transeks and every transecs there were 3 plot. The result of this research showed there were 4 luind of echinoidea, Trineustes gratilla, Echinometra mathaei, Diadema sitosum, Sea urchin. the most many quantities of echinoidea species that found al most in all of the station was Echinometra mathaei the most hig herst diversity indees was Trineustes gratilla in station 2 (H’=1) in station 3(H’=1). In station 3 (H’=1). The most highast dominancy andecs was Echinometra mathaei in station 2 (D=0,664)

Pantai Sepanjang memiliki karakteristik pantai dengan substrat berupa pasir dan hamparan karang mati yang banyak ditumbuhi makroalga, merupakan habitat berbagai jenis biota, salah satunya bulu babi. Biota tersebut memiliki fungsi ekologi sebagai pemakan detritus dan pengendali populasi makroalga di ekosistem terumbu karang. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui jenis, morfologi, anatomi, dan kelimpahan bulu babi serta hubungannya dengan parameter lingkungan. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan November 2019 di Pantai Sepanjang, Kabupaten Gunungkidul. Metode sampling menggunakan stratified random sampling dengan membagi lokasi pengamatan menjadi 3 stasiun (A, B, C) berdasarkan perbedaan tutupan substrat dasar perairan. Pengamatan dilakukan terhadap jenis, morfologi, anatomi, kelimpahan dan parameter lingkungan. Hasil penelitian ditemukan 6 jenis Bulu Babi yaitu Echinometra mathaei, Echinometra oblonga, Echinothrix calamaris, Heterocentrotus trigonarius, Diadema setosum dan Stomopneustes variolaris. Enam Jenis Bulu Babi tersebut memiliki karakteristik morfologi dan anatomi yang berbeda. Kelimpahan bulu babi pada stasiun A sebesar 474 ind/ 15m2, stasiun B sebesar 611 ind/ 15m2 dan stasiun C sebesar 81 ind/ 15m2. Berdasarkan Uji korelasi  menunjukkan bahan organik sedimen berkorelasi positif, sedangkan tekstur sedimen, suhu, salinitas berkorelasi negatif  dengan kelimpahan bulu babi. Sepanjang Beach has the characteristics of sand substrates and covered by dead corals, which are overgrown by macroalgae, and is a habitat for various types of biota, one of them sea urchins. This biota has an ecological function as a detritus feeder and macroalgae population controller in a coral reef ecosystem. The aims of the study is to determine the type, morphology, anatomy, and the linkage between the abundance of sea urchins to environmental parameters. The study was conducted in November 2019 at Sepanjang Beach, Gunungkidul Regency. The stratified random sampling was applied as sampling method, by dividing the observation location into 3 stations (A, B, C) based on the difference coverage of substrate. The observation covers the type, morphology, anatomy, abundance, and the environmental parameter. There were 6 sea urchins species namely Echinometra mathaei, Echinometra oblonga, Echinothrix calamaris, Heterocentrotus trigonarius, Diadema setosum and Stomopneustes variolaris, which have different characteristics of morphology and anatomy. The abundance of sea urchins at station A is 474 ind/ 15m2, station B is 611 ind/ 15m2, and station C is 81 ind/ 15m2. The sediment organic material and the abundance of sea urchins showed a significant correlation, while sediment texture, temperature, salinity have an insignificant correlation to the abundance of sea urchins.
