An experiment was conducted at Fruit Tree Improvement Project, Fruit Tree Improvement Programme, Bangladesh Agricultural University-Germplasm Center (FTIP, BAU-GPC), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period of April 2020 to June 2020 to study the performance of selected mango rootstocks for the saline area. The two-factor experiment consisted of four mango rootstock varieties such as V1 = BAU Aam-9, V2 = BAU Aam-6, V3 = BAU Aam-4 and V4 = Amropali and six salinity treatments namely control S1 = 0 dSm-1, S2 = 4 dSm-1, S3 = 8 dSm-1, S4 = 10 dSm-1, S5 = 12 dSm-1 and S6 = 14 dSm-1. The experiment was conducted following randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that rootstock line and salinity levels had significant influences on various rootstock characters viz. length of rootstocks, number of leaves and percent rootstocks success and survivability. In case of varietal effect, the highest number of leaves (32.44) found in BAU Aam-6 and the lowest number of leaves was recorded in Amropali (22.55) at 90 days after transplanting. The longest rootstock length observed in 90 DAT which (54.83 cm) found in BAU Aam-9and shortest rootstock recorded in Amropali (47.94 cm). The highest survivability (51.44%) was recorded in BAU Aam-9 and the lowest survivability recorded in Amropali (33.88%). In case of salinity treatments, the highest survivability (95.83%) was recorded in control and the lowest survivability (0.00%) recorded in 14 dsm-1 at 90 DAT. Interaction of rootstock varieties and different salinity treatments showed significant variation on the length leave and survivability of rootstocks at 90 DAT. The maximum number of rootstock leaves recorded in V2S2 (46.33) and lowest number of leave recorded in V4S6 (7.66). The highest rootstock length was found in V1S3 (78.00 cm) and lowest in V1S2 (21.66 cm). The highest Survivability (100 %) observed in V1S1, V1S2, V2S1, V2S2 and V4S1. From the above mentioned it can be said BAU Aam - 9 and BAU Aam – 6 rootstock varieties performed best from 0-8 dSm-1 salinity. The overall salinity tolerance was graded as follows: BAU Aam - 9>BAU Aam – 6> BAU Aam-4>Amropali rootstock line. SAARC J. Agric., 19(1): 93-102 (2021)

One of the major restrictions influencing crop production in Bangladesh's coastal districts is salinity. In order to better understand the specific conditions in the south-western region of Bangladesh, where significant salinity and problems in crop production prevail, this study took place in two districts, namely Satkhira and Khulna. Six upazila were selected for the current study: Satkhira Sadar, Kaligonj, and Dumuria in Satkhira, and Batiaghata and Dacope in Khulna. Among the selected farmers, about sixty six percent of farmers were small farmers. The average farm size was 0.83 ha. Most of the land of the saline area was covered by a single crop with T. Aman. Ninety percent of the farmer of Satkhira Sadar upazila cover T. Aman-mustard-boro, which was the main cropping pattern. T. Aman-mustard, T. Aman-wheat, T. Aman-grasspea etc., were the major existing cropping pattern. Different vegetables and other field crops such as bottle gourd, bitter gourd, ladies finger, garden pea, potato, sweet potato, maize, chili etc., were cultivated in the study area sporadically. Most of the cost involved for labor cost in T. Aman rice cultivation. If the farmer cultivates the land by sharecropping from the owner, then farmer gives half of the crop to his landowner. The highest total rice equivalent yield (TREY) was T. Aman-mustard-boro cropping pattern and it was 13.23 t ha-1. Most of the farmers eager to cultivate more new crops. Saline water, water stagnant, insufficient irrigation water, late harvest of T. Aman rice, late ‘joe’ condition etc., were the main constraints to develop a new cropping pattern.

Compartment syndrome is one of the complications of tissue damage of various origins, the basis of which is the compression of blood vessels and disruption of blood supply to tissues due to an increased local pressure in the closed space of the fascial sheath. The consequences of compartment syndrome can be local and general. An effective treatment of compartment syndrome in burns is to perform a necrotomy, which due to decompression helps to reduce intra−tissue pressure and diminish the scale of necrotic changes in tissues. In order to morphologically evaluate the effectiveness of necrofasciotomy, as well as the one in combination with infiltration of ozonated saline area of deep circular skin burns with underlying tissues, complicated by compartment syndrome, an experimental study was conducted. Circular deep burns, complicated by the formation of compartment syndrome, were simulated in 18 WAG rats. To reduce the pressure in the burned and surrounding tissues, surgical interventions such as necrofasciotomy were performed, which provided a notable reduction in pressure. In parallel, infiltration of damaged tissues with ozonated saline was performed, which was bubbled for 15 minutes at a dissolved ozone concentration of 4.0±0.2 mg / l, which improved microcirculation and reduced tissue hypoxia. The findings indicate that the compartment syndrome is characterized by a significant severity of general pathology. Performance of necrofasciotomy of a burn wound with its infiltration by ozonated physiological solution in comparison with just necrofasciotomy has more positive medical effect, and efficiency of these medical measures increases when they are performed at early terms (day 1) of formation of a burn wound in comparison with late terms (day 3). An experiment was conducted in south-western coastal saline area of Khulna district ofBangladesh (22°35′53.463″ N latitude and 89°27′42.617″ E longitude) during the period fromDecember 2018 to March 2019. The experiment was laid out in two factor Randomized CompleteBlock (RCB) design with three replications. Factor A included two potato varieties (V1= BARI Alu-72 and V2= BARI Alu-73) and factor B consisted with three rates of rice straw mulch viz. M1= 4 tonha−1, M2= 7 ton ha−1 and M3= 10 ton ha−1. Average thickness of mulch treatments were 11 cm, 13 cmand 15 cm, respectively. Mulch rate had significant effect on different soil and crop parameters,however there was no significant effect observed in variety and variety vs mulch rate. At harvest,highest plant height (50.7 cm), stem dry weight (1.33 g plant-1) and leaf dry weight (7.29 g plant−1)were recorded from M3 treatment. In case of yield components and yield, M3 treatment gavehighest value for number of tuber per plant (7.11), individual tuber weight (59.38 g), tuber yield(15.62 t ha−1), haulm yield (2.26 t ha−1). Significantly highest moisture was conserved by M3 treatment(27.13%) at harvest as well effectively controlled salinity (ECe) increase (only 1.25% increase thaninitial). So, it is observed that rice straw @ 10 t ha-1 is most suitable for zero tillage potato cultivationin the coastal area of Bangladesh.

Crop cultivation in the coastal saline area of Bangladesh during rabi season is limited due to late harvest of Aman rice, shorter winter period, difficulty in tillage, soil salinity, lack of fresh irrigation water etc. Zero tillage potato cultivation with mulching could minimize these obstacles and thereby increase system productivity. However, selection of mulching material is crucial for higher yield and economic return. An experiment was conducted at coastal saline area of Bangladesh during rabi 2018–19 to observe zero tillage potato performance under different mulch materials. Three locally available mulch materials were employed in the trial viz. rice straw (T1), rice husk (T2) and compost (T3) as control. Additionally, treatment T1 and T2 also received same amount of compost as T3. Results from single factor randomized complete block design with three replications showed that leaf dry matter, leaf area index and number of tuber per plant did not varied significantly. Significantly highest stem and root dry matter were found from T1 (69.56 kg ha−1) and T3 (138.92 kg ha−1), respectively. Rice husk (T2) produced numerically highest leaf dry matter (372.74 kg ha−1) and significantly lowest root dry matter (87.92 kg ha−1), which ultimately produced highest tuber yield (13.99 t ha−1) followed by rice straw (T1) (11.08 t ha−1). However, weed growth was highest in rice husk (1.16 t ha−1). Mulch treatments conserved 3.5 to 7.45% more moisture and 4.3% less salinity than control. Between two mulches rice straw is suggested for its profitability since it remains unused and readily available.

Certain minerals possess structures that convey properties which improve soil quality; however, their application in coastal saline areas has been poorly studied. In this study, we explored the effects of combining mineral amendments on the improvement of wheat yield and soil properties in a two-year field experiment in mildly saline coastal soil areas of the Yellow River Delta, China. Five mineral materials were combined into the following four treatments: zeolite + rock phosphate (ZP), zeolite + silica calcium soil conditioner (ZC), vermiculite + rock phosphate (VP), and vermiculite + medical stone (VS). For all treatments, combined mineral amendments increased wheat yield compared to the control, with similar increases in yield following treatment with VP (45.7%), ZP (43.5%), and ZC (43.6%), and a significantly smaller increase following VS treatment (26.3%). These increases in grain yield were attributed to larger dry matter accumulation and higher grain numbers per ha. Compared to the control, ZP and ZC application substantially reduced soluble magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) contents, electrical conductivity (EC), and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), and increased soil organic carbon (SOC) at a soil depth of 0–20 cm. VP application increased soil available phosphorus (P) by 34.7% and soluble potassium (K) by 69.3% at a soil depth of 0–20 cm. VS application slightly increased the SOC, total nitrogen (N), available P, and soluble K compared to the control. Overall, these results indicate that combining mineral amendments significantly increases wheat yield and improves soil properties in a saline area. Thus, we recommend the use of mineral amendments in saline coastal areas.
