In this paper, we consider a tritrophic food chain model with Holling functional response types III and IV for the predator and superpredator, respectively. The main attention is focused on the stability and bifurcation of equilibria when the prey has a linear growth. Coexistence of different species is shown in the food chain, demonstrating bistable phenomenon. Hopf bifurcation is studied to show complex dynamics due to multiple limit cycles bifurcation. In particular, normal form theory is applied to prove that three limit cycles can bifurcate from an equilibrium in the vicinity of a Hopf critical point, yielding a new bistable phenomenon which involves two stable limit cycles.

In this paper, a class of predator-prey systems with fear effect is investigated, the integrability conditions of the origin and the positive equilibrium are obtained, and the fact that three limit cycles can be bifurcated from the positive equilibrium is proved, so bistable phenomenon can occur for this system.

The deployment of a cylinder based on origami with Kresling pattern, whose basic mechanisms are formed by the buckling of a thin cylindrical shell under torsional loading, is studied in this paper. The model consists of identical triangular panels with cyclic symmetry and has a small displacement internal inextensional mechanism. First, geometric formulation of the design problem is presented. Then, assuming that the deployment and folding process is uniform, the bistable behavior of the cylinder is discussed. It can be found that, during the deployment, the dimensionless strain energy increases first and then reduces to zero but followed by another sharp increase. Moreover, the limit condition of geometry parameters for the bistable phenomenon is also discussed. Finally, the bistable behavior is also studied by using numerical simulations for simple and more complex case of the cylinder with multistory. The numerical results agree well with the analytical predictions. Therefore, comparisons with finite element predictions have shown that the analytical solutions given in this paper are accurate and have validated the assumptions made in the derivations.

Information plays an important role in modern society. In this paper, we presented a mathematical model of information spreading with isolation. It was found that such a model has rich dynamics including Hopf bifurcation. The results showed that, for a wide range of parameters, there is a bistable phenomenon in the process of information spreading and thus the information cannot be well controlled. Moreover, the model has a limit cycle which implies that the information exhibits periodic outbreak which is consistent with the observations in the real world.

Granular materials are ubiquitous in industrial, mining and pharmaceutical processes. In this paper, we study the flow pattern and optimization of granular chute flow with two bottlenecks. The dependence of flux on channel width show dilute to dense flow transition. A remarkable bistable phenomenon appears near the transition point. Base on this discovery, one can optimize the flow rate along such channels.

The flow around a finite-length square prism with aspect ratio of 5 is numerical investigated using LES at Red = 3900. The prism is mounted on a flat wall, with one end free. Based on the simulation results, it is found that the near wake is highly three dimensional under the effects of free-end downwash flow. The shear layers from prism side walls and free end form an arch-type structure. There are two typical flow modes presence in the near wake: first, the spanwise vortices are staggered arranged similar to that in 2D cylinder wake; second, the spanwise vortices are quasi-symmetrically arranged. These two modes occur alternately and intermittently. When the first mode occurs, the pressure on the prism side surface fluctuates periodically, corresponding to large values of drag and fluctuating lift coefficients; when the second modes occurs, there is no obvious pressure fluctuation on prism side surfaces, and the correspond drag and fluctuation life coefficients are significantly smaller than those for the first mode.

A novel deterministic SEIS model for the transmission of email viruses in growing communication networks is formulated. Interestingly, the model is different from classical SEIS models not only in the form, but also in the dynamical features. We study the equilibria and their stability and analyse the bifurcation dynamics of the model. In particular, we find that the virus-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable for any parameter values, which may attribute to the absence of the basic reproduction number. It is shown that the model undergoes a saddle-node bifurcation and admits the bistable phenomenon. Moreover, on the basis of the Lyapunov function, the domains of attraction of equilibria are estimated by solving an LMI optimization problem. Based on the above theoretical results, some effective strategies are also provided to control the propagation of the email viruses. Additionally, our results are confirmed by numerical simulations.
