Ideas within student’s scientific works must meet scientific conditions, one of which is written in a good and correct paragraph. Ironically, international students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang still make some mistakes upon writing papers even though they have been equipped with Indonesian language competence since the first semester. The current study aims to identify the problems on international students’ paragraphs, to find their factors, and to spot alternative solutions. It employed a qualitative approach with a text analysis or discourse analysis. The data were the in the form of linguistic practices within students’ papers. They were collected, classified, and analyzed according to the research focus. Three kinds of issues were found in the papers of international students at UIN Maliki Malang: not meeting the elements of cohesion and coherence, incomplete paragraph development, and unsequential paragraph development. Each form of the error supported one another

This book shows the transformative power of placing translanguaging at the center of teaching and learning. It shows how the centering of racialized Latinx bilingual students, including their knowledge systems and cultural and linguistic practices, transforms the monolingual-white supremacy ideology of many educational spaces.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the conditions and factors influencing the transmission of the Azerbaijani language in the Azerbaijani community in Moscow among well-integrated and socially successful migrants of the first and second generation. The research complies with the problem of linguistic contacts in the city in the aspect of the sociolinguistic dynamics of maintaining and preserving the language. The choice of the Azerbaijani community was due to the complexity of its social structure, developed connections within the community, the presence of linguistic environment in various domains, a complex sociolinguistic configuration of the languages used, including the relationship between the literary and dialectal forms of the Azerbaijani language and the Russian language. The use and transmission of the language by young Azerbaijanis was considered taking into account symbolic and instrumental dimensions of the language situation. The analysis of both real linguistic practices and linguistic representations of native speakers of the idiom made it possible to solve two problems: to identify the directions of the dynamics of the use and transmission of the Azerbaijani language in conditions of migration and to analyze how the desires of native speakers, their attitudes and linguistic representations correspond to their real efforts to support and preserve the language. The research methodology involved a sociolinguistic questionnaire (70 questionnaires in total) and a series of research interviews with community representatives (6 interviews). Interest in the level of language proficiency and transmission in the younger generation led to the division of informants according to the age criterion into two cohorts: from 18 to 29 years old and from 30 to 65+ years old. Further, we analyzed and compared the language practices of these cohorts. The results of the study show a high preservation and level of language transmission, strong loyalty of its speakers and a positive type of representations in both cohorts. Meanwhile, among the younger generation we observe the dynamics of linguistic practices towards increasing the role of the Russian language and a shift in the use of dialectal and literary forms of the Azerbaijani language; symbolic representations and overvaluation of the affective type prevail in the social image of the language.

Emilie Taylor-Pirie

AbstractIn this chapter Taylor-Pirie examines how parasitologists invoked myths of British nationhood in their professional self-fashioning to frame themselves as knights of science fighting on behalf of Imperial Britain. Analysing scientific lectures, political speeches, letter correspondence, obituaries, medical biographies, and journalistic essays, she draws attention to the prominence of Arthurian legend and Greco-Roman mythology in conceptualisations of parasitology, arguing that such literary-linguistic practices sought to reimagine the relationship between medicine and empire by adapting historical and poetic models of chivalry. In this way, individual researchers were lionised as national heroes and their research framed as labour that could command the longevity of legendary stories like those recounted in Homeric poems and medieval romance. In acclimatisation debates, the tropics were frequently conceptualised in relation to the Greek Underworld, a suite of references that together with dragon slaying and the quest narrative helped to position parasitology as a type of ‘crusading fiction’ in the context of the Victorian medieval revival.

The article presents a sociolinguistic analysis of the communication style of users in social networks and messengers. Based on the methods of sociolinguistics and indirect analysis methods of discourse, the usual moments of exchanging messages between users of a certain social group in Viber are compared with their interactions using the same environment in social networks during the occurrence of non-standard situations. The combination of case studies and the study of key moments when relevant offline moments affect the linguistic practices of a particular community can influence the understanding of current semi-social online communication. Accordingly, stylistic and linguistic practices of communication in social networks and messengers bear the imprint of the communication process and are directly related to the topic of the issues discussed. If, outside of a critical situation, such communication will receive an impression of ease and be confirmed by the usage of colloquial words, impulsive abbreviations, named sentences and a significant number of emojis.

Political communication often aims at establishing a community. By participating in a discourse, the discourse actors position themselves not only on the given topic, but also with other participants in the discourse; they are often actors and/or representatives of specific communities of practice (cf. Eckert & McConnel-Ginet 1992). Based on these considerations, the contribution examines linguistic practices with an effect of creating or denying community at the example of the German migration discourse. Applying a discourse analytical approach, the analysis of a corpus of plenary debates focuses on the linguistic realisation of self- and other-positioning.

In this special issue of Toronto Working Papers in Linguistics, we engage in this productive and growing conversation by bringing together ongoing work on gender-inclusive language as well as the linguistic practices among trans and non-binary communities. Each of these papers offers a unique perspective on the ever-diversifying nuances of language, and together challenge established norms of language use and research practices.
