Carbon-based reinforcements have been widely reported in improving mechanical properties of polymers. However, still few studies exist on the incorporation of the interphase as a result of the interfacial interactions into analytical prediction tools. To better understand the effect of interfacial interphase, this study compares and correlates the experimental mechanical response of polyester based composites filled with carbon black (CB) with the elastic behavior obtained from the micromechanical models. Mold cast composites of polyester reinforced with 0 wt%–10 wt% of CB were fabricated. To determine the length of cooperative rearranging region (CRR) as a measure of the interphase, thermal studies focusing on the variations in the specific heat capacity or the relaxation strength of the composites around the glass transition temperature ( Tg) range were performed using a thermodynamical model. Micromechanical models such as the Halpin-Tsai and Tandon-Weng were used to determine the Young’s modulus with respect to the CB wt% and diameter as well as the interphase thickness and modulus. The results exhibited the sensitivity of the models to the existence of the interphase as a secondary mechanism, which was correlated to the cross-link density and interfacial bonding. The impact results showed the decrease in the impact resistance upon the addition of higher filler loadings ascribed to the destroyed bonding at the interface and CBs agglomeration confirmed by morphological studies. The research results can be further utilized in the explanation of the changes in the elastic response of carbon-based reinforced thermosetting composites emphasizing the key role of interphase.

Structural performance of unidirectional composites (UD) is directly dependent on its ingredient’s properties, ply configurations and the manufacturing effects. Prediction of mechanical properties using multiscale manufacturing simulation and micromechanical models is the focus of this study. Particular problem of coupled dual-scale deformation-flow process such as the one arising in RTM, Vacuum-Assisted Resin Infusion (VARI) and Vacuum Bag Only (VBO) prepregs is considered. A finite element formulation of porous media theory framework is employed to predict the element-wise local volume fractions and the deformation of a preform in a press forming process. This formulation considers coupling effects between macro-scale preform processes and mesoscale ply processes as well as coupling effects between the solid and fluid phases. A number of different micromechanical models are assessed and the most suitable one is used to calculate mechanical properties from volume fractions. Structural performance of the “deformed” geometry is then evaluated in mechanical analysis. An integrated platform is designed to cover the whole chain of analysis and perform the properties’ calculation and transfer them between the modules in a smooth mapping procedure. The paper is concluded with a numerical example, where a compression-relaxation test of a planar fluid filled prepreg at globally un-drained condition is considered followed by a mechanical loading analysis. The development is user friendly and interactive and is established to enable design and optimization of composites.

Friction models are proposed for anisotropic and heterogeneous dry friction on boundaries of polymer solids. Unit vectors and oriented angles of sliding velocities, radii of curvature and unit normal vectors of sliding trajectories are taken as independent variables in constitutive equations of anisotropic and heterogeneous friction. Heterogeneous dry friction of a polymer pin in pin-on-disc tests is illustrated in the case of Archimedean spiral trajectory. Individual molecular chains composing polymer materials can move inside the material with a high degree of friction anisotropy. The resistance of macromolecule motion is considered with respect to micromechanical models of macromolecules, their kinematics, and friction laws. Two approaches are applied for modeling of anisotropic friction inside polymer materials: continuum-based models (anisotropic viscous friction) and micromechanical models (anisotropic dry friction). Examples of macromolecule dry friction are considered under conditions of spinning and sliding of a disc-like macromolecule and snake-like sliding of a long macromolecule.

Woven laminated composite has gained researchers’ and industry’s interest over time due to its impressive mechanical performance compared to unidirectional composites. Nevertheless, the mechanical properties of the woven laminated composite are hard to predict. There are many micromechanical models based on unidirectional composite but limited to the woven laminated composite. The current research work was conducted to evaluate elastic moduli of hybrid jute–ramie woven reinforced unsaturated polyester composites using micromechanical effectiveness unidirectional models, such as ROM, IROM, Halpin–Tsai, and Hirsch, which are based on stiffness. The hybrid jute–ramie laminated composite was fabricated with different layering sizes, and the stacking sequence was completed via hand lay-up with the compression machine. Tensile modulus values for hybrid composites are between those for single jute and single ramie. Obtained p-values less than 0.05 prove the relationship between layering size and tensile modulus. This study showed that several micromechanical models, such as Halpin–Tsai’s predicted value of homogenized mechanical properties, were in good agreement with the experimental result. In the case of the hybrid composite, the micromechanical model deviates from the experimental result. Several modifications are required to improve the current existing model. A correlation function was calculated based on the differences between the elastic modulus values determined experimentally and those derived from each micromechanical model calculation.
