Raindrop size distribution (RSD) is a key parameter in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for rainfall estimation, with gamma distribution models commonly used to describe RSD under WRF microphysical parameterizations. The RSD model sets the shape parameter (μ) as a constant of gamma distribution in WRF double-moment bulk microphysics schemes. Here, we propose to improve the gamma RSD model with an adaptive value of μ based on the rainfall intensity and season, designed using a genetic algorithm (GA) and the linear least-squares method. The model can be described as a piecewise post-processing function that is constant when rainfall intensity is <1.5 mm/h and linear otherwise. Our numerical simulation uses the WRF driven by an ERA-interim dataset with three distinct double-moment bulk microphysical parameterizations, namely, the Morrison, WDM6, and Thompson aerosol-aware schemes for the period of 2013–2017 over the United Kingdom at a 5 km resolution. Observations were made using a disdrometer and 241 rain gauges, which were used for calibration and validation. The results show that the adaptive-μ model of the gamma distribution was more accurate than the gamma RSD model with a constant shape parameter, with the root-mean-square error decreasing by averages of 23.62%, 11.33%, and 22.21% for the Morrison, WDM6, and Thompson aerosol-aware schemes, respectively. This model improves the accuracy of WRF rainfall simulation by applying adaptive RSD parameterization and can be integrated into the simulation of WRF double-moment microphysics schemes. The physical mechanism of the RSD model remains to be determined to improve its performance in WRF bulk microphysics schemes.

In this study an attempt has been made to inspect the forecasting of thunderstorms based on two cases (1st case: 17th May, 2019 and 2nd case: 31st March, 2019) over Dhaka using WRF Model. The model is run for 72 hours with 03 nested domain of 09 km, 03 km and 01 km horizontal resolutions using 0.25º X 0.25º six hourly global data assimilation system. For model simulation, Milbrandt-Yau Double-Moment 7-class scheme (9) has been used as microphysics scheme in this study. The model performance is evaluated by calculating hourly instability indices (VTI, TTI, KI, CTI, MCAPE, MCIN, BRN, LI, SI, SWI) value and have been compared with the threshold value of indices. Different meteorological parameters such as MSLP, temperature, winds at upper (300 hPa) and lower (925 hPa) level, relative humidity along with vertical cross section are also studied by the model and compared with the favorable conditions for forming of thunderstorms. Area rage rainfall (hourly) value has been also calculated and compared with indices value to comprehend the nature of thunderstorms. Observing the indices value it is seen that all indices value increase sharply 5-6 hours before of thunderstorm occurring and MCAPE is giving more reliable result.  Moreover, this study shows that inner two domains (3 and 1 km resolution) are giving better results than outer one and which indices are more probable in forecasting of thunderstorm for our country as well as giving less Root Mean square Error. From the simulated and validated results, it can be concluded that the model performance of instability indices can be used as forecasting of thunderstorms over Bangladesh.

AbstractA mesoscale convective system that occurred in southwestern Taiwan on 15 June 2008 is simulated using convection-allowing ensemble forecasts to investigate the forecast uncertainty associated with four microphysics schemes—the Goddard Cumulus Ensemble (GCE), Morrison (MOR), WRF single-moment 6-class (WSM6), and WRF double-moment 6-class (WDM6) schemes. First, the essential features of the convective structure, hydrometeor distribution, and microphysical tendencies for the different microphysics schemes are presented through deterministic forecasts. Second, ensemble forecasts with the same initial conditions are employed to estimate the forecast uncertainty produced by the different ensembles with the fixed microphysics scheme. GCE has the largest spread in most state variables due to its most efficient phase conversion between water species. By contrast, MOR results in the least spread. WSM6 and WDM6 have similar vertical spread structures due to their similar ice-phase formulae. However, WDM6 produces more ensemble spread than WSM6 does below the melting layer, resulting from its double-moment treatment of warm rain processes. The model simulations with the four microphysics schemes demonstrate upscale error growth through spectrum analysis of the root-mean difference total energy (RMDTE). The RMDTE results reveal that the GCE and WDM6 schemes are more sensitive to initial condition uncertainty, whereas the MOR and WSM6 schemes are relatively less sensitive to that for this event. Overall, the diabatic heating–cooling processes connect the convective-scale cloud microphysical processes to the large-scale dynamical and thermodynamical fields, and they significantly affect the forecast error signatures in the multiscale weather system.

Abstract. Motivated by recent discussions concerning differences of convective dynamics in polluted and pristine environments, the so-called convective invigoration in particular, this paper provides an analysis of factors affecting convective updraft buoyancy, such as the in-cloud supersaturation, condensate and precipitation loading, and entrainment. We use the deep convective period from simulations of daytime convection development over land discussed in our previous publications. An entraining parcel framework is used in the theoretical analysis. We show that for the specific case considered here, finite (positive) supersaturation noticeably reduces pseudo-adiabatic parcel buoyancy and cumulative convective available potential energy (cCAPE) in the lower troposphere. This comes from keeping a small fraction of the water vapor in a supersaturated state and thus reducing the latent heating. Such a lower-tropospheric impact is comparable to the effects of condensate loading and entrainment in the idealized parcel framework. For the entire tropospheric depth, loading and entrainment have a much more significant impact on the total CAPE. For the cloud model results, we compare ensemble simulations applying either a bulk microphysics scheme with saturation adjustment or a more comprehensive double-moment scheme with supersaturation prediction. We compare deep convective updraft velocities, buoyancies, and supersaturations from all ensembles. In agreement with the parcel analysis, the saturation-adjustment scheme provides noticeably stronger updrafts in the lower troposphere. For the simulations predicting supersaturation, there are small differences between pristine and polluted conditions below the freezing level that are difficult to explain by standard analysis of the in-cloud buoyancy components. By applying the piggybacking technique, we show that the lower-tropospheric buoyancy differences between pristine and polluted simulations come from a combination of temperature (i.e., latent heating) and condensate loading differences that work together to make polluted buoyancies and updraft velocities slightly larger when compared to their pristine analogues. Overall, the effects are rather small and contradict previous claims of a significant invigoration of deep convection in polluted environments.

The intensity and frequency variability of cyclones in the North Indian Ocean (NIO) have been amplified over the last few decades. The number of very severe cyclonic storms (VSCSs) over the North Indian Ocean has increased over recent decades. “Phailin”, an extreme severe cyclonic storm (ESCS), occurred during 8–13 October 2013 over the Bay of Bengal and made landfall near the Gopalpur coast of Odisha at 12 UTC on 12 October. It caused severe damage here, as well as in the coastal Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and adjoining regions due to strong wind gusts (~115 knot/h), heavy precipitation, and devastating storm surges. The fidelity of the WRF model in simulating the track and intensity of tropical cyclones depends on different cloud microphysical parameterization schemes. Thus, four sensitivity simulations were conducted for Phailin using double-moment and single-moment microphysical (MP) parameterization schemes. The experiments were conducted to quantify and characterize the performance of such MP schemes for Phailin. The simulations were performed by the advanced weather research and forecasting (WRF-ARW) model. The model has two interactive domains covering the entire Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Odisha on 25 km and 8.333 km resolutions. Milbrandt–Yau (MY) double-moment and WRF single-moment microphysical schemes, with 6, 5, and 3 classes of hydrometeors, i.e., WSM6, WSM5, and WSM3, were used for the simulation. Experiments for Phailin were conducted for 126 h, starting from 00 UTC 08 October to 06 UTC 13 October 2013. It was found that the track, intensity, and structure of Phailin are highly sensitive to the different microphysical parameterization schemes. Further, the precipitation and cloud distribution were studied during the ESCS stage of Phailin. The microphysics schemes (MY, WSM3, WSM5, WSM6), along with Grell–Devenyi ensemble convection scheme predicted landfall of Phailin over the Odisha coast with significant track errors. Supply of moisture remains a more crucial component than SST and wind shear for rapid intensification of the Phailin 12 h before landfall over the Bay of Bengal. Finally, the comparison of cyclone formation between two decades 2001–2010 and 2011–2020 over the Bay of Bengal inferred that the increased numbers of VSCS are attributed to the supply of abundant moisture at low levels in the recent decade 2011–2020.

Abstract. By synthesising remote-sensing measurements made in the central Arctic into a model-gridded Cloudnet cloud product, we evaluate how well the Met Office Unified Model (UM) and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) capture Arctic clouds and their associated interactions with the surface energy balance and the thermodynamic structure of the lower troposphere. This evaluation was conducted using a four-week observation period from the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition, where the transition from sea ice melting to freezing conditions was measured. Three different cloud schemes were tested within a nested limited area model (LAM) configuration of the UM – two regionally-operational single-moment schemes (UM_RA2M and UM_RA2T), and one novel double-moment scheme (UM_CASIM-100) – while one global simulation was conducted with the IFS, utilising its default cloud scheme (ECMWF_IFS). Consistent weaknesses were identified across both models, with both the UM and IFS overestimating cloud occurrence below 3 km. This overestimation was also consistent across the three cloud configurations used within the UM framework, with > 90 % mean cloud occurrence simulated between 0.15 and 1 km in all model simulations. However, the cloud microphysical structure, on average, was modelled reasonably well in each simulation, with the cloud liquid water content (LWC) and ice water content (IWC) comparing well with observations over much of the vertical profile. The key microphysical discrepancy between the models and observations was in the LWC between 1 and 3 km, where most simulations (all except UM_RA2T) overestimated the observed LWC. Despite this reasonable performance in cloud physical structure, both models failed to adequately capture cloud-free episodes: this consistency in cloud cover likely contributes to the ever-present near-surface temperature bias simulated in every simulation. Both models also consistently exhibited temperature and moisture biases below 3 km, with particularly strong cold biases coinciding with the overabundant modelled cloud layers. These biases are likely due to too much cloud top radiative cooling from these persistent modelled cloud layers and were interestingly consistent across the three UM configurations tested, despite differences in their parameterisations of cloud on a sub-grid-scale. Alarmingly, our findings suggest that these biases in the regional model were inherited from the driving model, thus triggering too much cloud formation within the lower troposphere. Using representative cloud condensation nuclei concentrations in our double-moment UM configuration, while improving cloud microphysical structure, does little to alleviate these biases; therefore, no matter how comprehensive we make the cloud physics in the nested LAM configuration used here, its cloud and thermodynamic structure will continue to be overwhelmingly biased by the meteorological conditions of its driving model.

Abstract. This study uses the high-resolution GRAPES_Meso (the mesoscale version of the Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System) to simulate a severe squall line hailstorm in Shandong province. The accumulated precipitation, radar reflectivity, and cloud hydrometeor properties simulated using a modified double-moment microphysics scheme are compared with observation. Results show that simulations captured the basic character of this squall line hailstorm. The simulated accumulation precipitation and radar reflectivity are comparable with the observation. The cross-section of the dynamic, microphysical, and radar reflectivity structures of the simulated hailstorm was analyzed. The simulated hailstorm has shown a reasonable result in both macrostructure and micro hail production rates. The development of the simulated hailstorm is consistent with the conceptual model of hailstorm evolution. Results imply the ability of high-resolution GRAPES_Meso on forecasting hailstorm.
