The work evaluates the effect of firing temperature on the mechanical properties of ceramic tiles. This was with the view to determine the optimum processing condition for Osun State ceramic tiles. Ceramic raw materials collected from Osun State were batched using clay-feldspar-silica sand blending ratio of 5:4:1, 5:3:2, 5:2:3, 5:1:4, 6:3:1, 6:2:2, 6:1:3, 7:2:1, 7:1:2 and 8:1:1 by weight; and homogeneously mixed. Three replica samples were moulded by the method of dry forming, fired at 1200, 1300 and 1400 oC and subjected to breaking and flexural strength tests using the Universal Testing Machine while the hardness test was carried out on a Moh’s scale. The results showed that breaking strength, flexural strength and Moh’s hardness fell within the range 199.43 to 325 N, 11.97 to 19.50 N/mm2 and 2.5 to 4 MH respectively, while Figures revealed that samples with 60% clay, 10% feldspar and 30% silica sand fired at 1320 oC will process the best mechanical properties. In conclusion, ceramic raw materials collected from Osun State are viable for ceramic tile production.

Magnetic properties of Co, Ni and Zn substituted barium hexaferrite (BaM) samples prepared by solid state ceramic method were studied. Saturation magnetisation were found higher for Zn-substituted BaM, whereas, coercivity is higher for Co2+ and Ni2+ ion substituted samples. Anisotropy field for all substituted samples was calculated by the law of approaching saturation. Remanence, squareness and thermomagnetic plot suggest Zn2+ ions restricts the magnetic interaction of various sites in BaM.

In this work, (1-x)Li2TiO3-xLi4NbO4F ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state ceramic route. With the increase of Li4NbO4F content, the phase structure transformed from ordered monoclinic to disordered cubic. By increasing Li3NbO4F content, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf) was successfully adjusted closer to zero, while the dielectric constant (εr) and microwave quality factor (Qf) decreased to some degree. Outstanding microwave dielectric properties with a εr = 18.7, Qf = 61,388 GHz (6.264 GHz), and τf = 0.9 ppm/°C were obtained for 0.9Li2TiO3-0.1Li4NbO4F ceramics sintered at 1050 °C for 2 h, which indicated that these ceramics are suitable for practical applications in the field of microwave substrates and components.

BaZr0.2[Ti(1-x)Mgx/3Ta2x/3]0.8O3 (x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) (BZTMT) ceramics were prepared through conventional solid state ceramic route. The crystal structure and microstructure of the compounds were investigated respectively using XRD and SEM. The dielectric properties were measured in the frequency range of 100 Hz–1 MHz. The ferroelectric Curie temperature of BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (x = 0) shifted from 21°C to -10°C with the addition of minute amount of dopant (x = 0.025) and the paraelectric transition temperature is diffusive in nature. The relative permittivity and dielectric loss of BZTMT at 1 MHz varies from 5205 to 24 and 1.8 × 10–2 to 2.0 × 10–5 respectively, as the value of x increases from 0 to 1.

BiScO3-xPbTiO3 (BS-PT) of perovskite type structure (with x~0.64) were prepared by solid state ceramic process with addition of calcium fluoride (CaF2) in different molar ratios (0.5, 1.0 and 4.0 mol%). The doped compositions were found to have different symmetry compared with parent material. The 0.5 mol% doped sample was found to possess enhanced rhombohedral phase as compared to other compositions while he Curie temperature (Tc) was not affected appreciably. Small dielectric peaks were observed, indicating phase transition, at temperature lower than Tc in all the samples except 4.0% doped composition. At room temperature doping reduced the loss factor. d33 and Pr reduced rapidly with doping. The characteristics of BS-PT ferroelectric ceramics became harder with the addition of CaF2.
