Ophthalmic treatments using contact lenses are now used by more and more specialists around the world. Improving contact lens (CL) materials is a condition that is constantly evolving. Contact lens materials are usually composed of polymer hydrogel or silicone hydrogel. The materials used for night contact lenses are gas permeable and they gradual flatten the center of the cornea which decreases the progression of myopia or myopic astigmatism. The aim of this study is to identify, in correlation with the chemical interactions between structural components of contact lenses and their biocompatibility with the surface layer and microtopography of the cornea or sclera, different incidents that occur in patients who have used rigid gas permeable contact lenses. The study was performed on a group of 10 patients who had a follow-up period between 4 and 6 years, who presented regularly for eye examinations. The following clinical parameters were analyzed: ocular refraction before and after wearing night contact lenses, types of contact lens materials, appearance of corneal topography, biomicroscopic examination of the anterior segment of the eye, keratometry, ocular comfort, as well as other incidents regarding this type of lenses. Difficulties caused by wearing contact lenses at night arose due to poor hygiene and maintenance in two cases or due to interruption of lens wear in one case.

This was a cross-sectional study conducted to explore the patterns of refractive errors found in infantile esotropia patients from newborns to the age of 15 years, attending the Pediatric clinic of Al-Ibrahim Eye Hospital, Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. Data was collected on a pre-designed proforma.  A total of 79 patients (total of 158 eyes) including 44 males (55%) and 36 females (45%) were recruited. All these patients had infantile esotropia. The study showed out of 79 patients (158 eyes), 89 eyes had hyperopia, 15 eyes had myopic astigmatism, 44 eyes had hyperopic astigmatism, while 4 eyes had mixed astigmatism, and 6 eyes had myopia. The hypermatropia was found to be the most commonly occurring refractive error in infantile esotropia resulting in inward eye deviation.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the root mean square error (RMS) of corneal higher- order aberrations in Syrian adult population in different refractive status (emmetropia, myopia, hyperopia and simple myopic astigmatism). Methods: This cross- sectional study was conducted at Tishreen University Hospital in Latakia, Syrian Arab Republic. A total of 420 patients (840 eyes), ages 18- 40 years, participated in the study. Refraction was measured with an autorefractor keratometer and expressed as a spherical equivalent. Total corneal higher- order aberrations (Coma, Spherical Aberration, Trefoil) were measured using Sirius Corneal Topography at a pupil diameter of 5 mm. Results: RMS of Coma and Spherical aberrations peaked in the hyperopia group (0.18 ± 0.08, 0.11 ± 0.02) respectively. Whereas, Trefoil was higher in the severe myopia and simple myopic astigmatism groups (0.25 ± 0.05, 0.25 ± 0.08) respectively. Conclusions: Among a Syrian population, some types of refractive status were associated with certain types of higher- order aberrations, with a significant increase in trefoil in severe myopia and simple myopic astigmatism.

The study aimed to evaluate and compare anterior segment parameters between keratoconic eyes and eyes with high myopic astigmatism using Pentacam Scheimpflug tomography. This was a retrospective cross-sectional study that included sixty keratoconic eyes (thirty-two persons) and seventy-three eyes (forty-six persons) with high myopic astigmatism with mean ages 24.72 ± 11.65years and 26.60 ± 10.69years, respectively. Twenty-three parameters from the topographic map and fifteen parameters from the Belin-Ambrosió enhanced ectasia display map of the printouts of a Scheimpflug principle-based Pentacam tomographer were evaluated for their diagnostic accuracy using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. All parameters except cornea volume, anterior chamber volume, and anterior chamber angle indicated a significant difference between high myopic astigmatism and keratoconic eyes. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) of eighteen Pentacam parameters was excellent (0.9–1.0) in discriminating keratoconus from high myopic astigmatism, out of which four {anterior minimum sagittal curvature (ant. Rmin), posterior minimum sagittal curvature (post. Rmin), maximum Ambrosió relational thickness (ART max) and total deviation value (D)} indicated excellent (>90%) sensitivity and specificity in addition to the excellent AUROC values. Topographic and Belin-Ambrosió enhanced ectasia display (BAD) maps of a Scheimpflug principle-based Pentacam tomographer are useful in enhancing the diagnosis of keratoconus and may also provide valuable information in effectively screening for keratoconus cases among refractive surgery candidates with high myopic astigmatism.

Abstract Purpose To report the visual and refractive outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction ReLEX (SMILE) technique using VisuMax femtosecond laser in myopia and myopic astigmatism patients. Material and methods A non-randomized clinical study has been conducted on patients with myopia and myopic astigmatism who underwent ReLEX SMILE technique, using the Zeiss VisuMax Laser system (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) at Oculens Clinic, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Patients older than 18 years, with ocular astigmatism up to -5 diopters (D), spherical equivalent up to -10.00 D, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of 0.3 or better before the surgery, stable refraction for one year, and with a minimum calculated post operator residual stromal bed of 250μ were included in the study. Results The study involved a total of 25 myopic eyes (median of sphere diopters equal with -4D) and 67 myopic astigmatic eyes (median of cylinder diopters equal with -1.5 D). The mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) on patients with myopic eyes reduced from -4.25D (median) to -0.5D at one month follow-up, -0.25 D at 6 and 12 months. The mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) on patients with astigmatic myopic eyes reduced from-6.25 D to -0.67 D at one month, -0.62 D at six and twelve months. The value of sphere decreased postoperatively on myopic eyes with a median of -0.25D at one, six and twelve months. The value of cylinder decreased postoperatively on myopic astigmatic eyes with a median of -0.50 D at one month, -0.25 D at six months and -0.50 D at 12 months. At 6 and 12 months, 20 (80.0%) of myopic eyes were maintained within ±0.5 D and 22 (88.0%) with ±1D. On both groups (myopic eyes and myopic astigmatic eyes), statistically significant differences were observed when the keratometric baseline values were compared to each follow-up (P-values < 0.0001), without any significant differences between follow-ups (P-values>0.15). At 1-month follow-up, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was better than or equal to 0.5 in 88.0% of myopic eyes and 82.1% of myopic astigmatic eyes. UDVA remained stable in all cases of myopic eyes at six months and the percentage increased at 92.0% in myopic eyes. UDVA slightly increased at 6-months (85.1%) and remained at the same value at 12-months in myopic astigmatism eyes. Conclusions SMILE proved an effective and safe refractive corneal procedure and provided a predictable and stable correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. SMILE technique demonstrated very good outcomes in terms of keratometric, cylinder, spherical measurements.

Abstract Objective: Analysis of visual acuity parameters in patients with moderate to high myopia and myopic astigmatism 1 year after treatment with phakic intraocular lenses. Material and methods: This was a retrospective study on 35 patients (52 eyes) with moderate to high myopia who were implanted with the Visian V4c phakic implantable Collamer lens (Staar Surgical, Nidau, Switzerland). Examined parameters were: uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and best corrected visual acuity (CDVA), manifest and cycloplegic refraction, intraocular pressure, and endothelial cell count. The investigated parameters were measured preoperatively, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Results: In 17 patients, phakic lenses were implanted binocularly and in 18 patients monocularly. Preoperatively 34.62% of patients had CDVA from 0.9 to 1.0. One year after the surgery 48.08% of patients had UDVA from 0.9 to 1.0. Preoperatively 80.77% of patients had diopter range from -6.00 Dsph to -10.00 Dsph. At 1 year postoperatively 78.85% of patients were within 0.00 Dsph to -1.00 Dsph. Preoperatively, in patients with astigmatism -4 Dcyl to -2 Dcyl dominated, as opposed to significant improvement postoperatively when 94.23% had astigmatism ranging from -1.0 Dcyl to 0 Dcyl. Conclusion: The implantation of phakic lenses demonstrated a successful postoperative outcome in the treatment of myopia and myopic astigmatism. Visual acuity and refraction show a gradual and significant improvement in visual function parameters within 1 year of lens implantation.
