<p>Site U1512 was drilled during Expedition 369 of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), which is located in the Great Australian Bight, southern Indian Ocean. It provides exceptional insights into the benthic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and paleoecology of a high southern latitude restricted marginal marine basin during the Late Cretaceous hot greenhouse climate and the rifting between Australia and Antarctica. The sedimentary sequence recovered at Site U1512 presents a rare record of a deep water agglutinated foraminifera (DWAF) community from the Southern High Latitudes. The Cretaceous record at Site U1512 covers the lower Turonian through Santonian (nannofossil zones UC8b to UC12/CC10b to CC16, <em>H. helvetica</em> to <em>Marginotruncana</em> spp. - <em>Planoheterohelix papula</em> - <em>Globotruncana linneana</em> planktonic foraminifera zones). Diverse benthic foraminiferal assemblages yield many new taxa that are yet to be described.</p><p>Agglutinated forms dominate the assemblage in most intervals. In lower to mid Turonian and Santonian strata, calcareous benthic as well as planktonic foraminifera are frequent. Abundant radiolaria are recovered from the mid Turonian, and they increase up-section and exceed 50% of the microfossil assemblage. We documented a diverse benthic foraminiferal assemblage consisting of 162 taxa (110 agglutinated and 52 calcareous). The most common taxa of the DWAF assemblage are tubular (i.e., <em>Kalamopsis grzybowskii,</em> <em>Bathysiphon</em> spp.) and planispiral forms (i.e., <em>Ammodiscus</em> spp., <em>Haplophragmoides</em> spp., <em>Buzasina</em> sp., <em>Labrospira</em> spp.).</p><p>The Turonian strata yield highly abundant <em>Bulbobaculites problematicus</em> and <em>Spiroplectammina navarroana</em>. The presence of the agglutinated foraminiferal marker taxa <em>Uvigerinammina jankoi</em> and <em>Bulbobaculites problematicus</em> provides a tie-point to the Tethyan DWAF biozonation of Geroch and Nowak (1984). The composition of foraminiferal assemblages and the increase in radiolaria abundance suggest unstable environmental conditions at Site U1512 during the early Turonian through Santonian. These characteristics refer to changes in bathymetry associated with changing ocean chemistry. Results of quantitative analyses of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages indicate a restricted paleoenvironmental regime, dictated by changes in paleobathymetry, unstable patterns in ocean circulation, and the discharge of a nearby river delta system.</p><p>References: Geroch, S., Nowak, K., 1984. AbstractWe have analysed a 6100-year record of benthic and planktonic foraminifera from inner neritic sediments from Core SK291/GC13, off the Goa coast, eastern Arabian Sea, to understand the response of benthic foraminifera to shallow-marine processes. The benthic foraminiferal assemblage is dominated by Nonion cf. asterizans, Ammonia beccarii, A. gaimardii and Virgulinella fragilis, which have been selected on the basis of a population of 10% or more in any three samples analysed. The planktonic foraminiferal population is sporadic and rare, with Globigerinoides ruber as the predominant species showing a variable trend. The foraminiferal proxies combined with total organic carbon (wt%) and δ13C and δ18O values of Ammonia gaimardii suggest distinct variations, indicating changes in productivity and salinity in the shallow eastern Arabian Sea. The coastal waters off Goa were relatively warmer and less saline between 6100 and 4600, or perhaps to 4200, calibrated years before the present (cal yr BP), corresponding to a stronger monsoon in South and East Asia. The shallow sea was cooler from ~4200 to 2600 cal yr BP in the study area, coinciding with a lower sea surface temperature in the northeastern Arabian Sea and an arid phase in the Indian subcontinent. From 2900 to 2600 cal yr BP the study core exhibits the impacts of short-term cold events, which have earlier been observed in the northeastern Arabian Sea, off Pakistan. During the Little Ice Age, the shallow sea off Goa was less productive.

Larger foraminifera and associated fauna from the Maastrichtian of the southern valencian Prebaetic sector (E Iberian Peninsula) The benthic foraminiferal assemblage and the associated fauna found in the Upper Cretaceous deposits of the Serra de la Solana, Valencia (Spain) have been revised. The study has allowed us to confirm the presence of the foraminiferal species Hellenocyclina beotica Reichel, Siderolites aff. calcitrapoides Lamarck, Orbitoides apiculata Schlumberger, Orbitoides gensacicus (Leymerie) and Omphalocyclus macroporus (Lamarck), as stated by previous authors. In addition, the revision has permitted to identify some other species, never cited before in Serra de la Solana and neighbour regions in Iberian Peninsula, such as Fissoelphidium operculiferum Smout and Selimina cf. spinalis Inan and two different morphotypes of rotaliids that we have left in open nomenclature, namely, Rotaliidae indet. sp. 1 and Rotaliidae indet. sp. 2. The rudists and echinoid found associated to these benthic foraminifera have been also revised. The rudist species found are Hippurites radiosus Des Moulins, Hippurites cornucopiae Defrance, Hippurites cf. lamarcki Douvillé, and Apricardia sp., the two latter cited in Serra de la Solana for the first time. The echinoid assemblage is composed of the species Pygopyrina darderi (Lambert), Linthia payeni (Coquand) and Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske). The whole assemblage, typical of shallow-water platform environments, is Upper Maastrichtian in age and shows some differences in respect other contemporaneous asseblages from other paleogeographical areas.

Attached epilithic foraminifera constitute an important but overlooked component of the benthic foraminiferal assemblage in the Pleistocene sediment of the central Arctic Ocean. We report 12 types of epilithic foraminifera that have colonised lithic and biogenic grains found in glacial sediments, including representatives of the genera Rhizammina, Hemisphaerammina, Ammopemphix, Diffusilina, Subreophax, Placopsilina, Placopsilinella, Hormosinelloides and Tholosina, accompanied by mat-like and ribbon-like forms of uncertain taxonomic affinity. The attached agglutinated forms appear to be colonisers, adapted to extremely oligotrophic conditions.

The main aim of this study is to characterize the different stages in the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Almenara marsh, Spain, from the early Holocene to the present day. This marsh is one of the most important in Castellón province. Five cores extracted from the marsh underwent sedimentological analysis, micropalaeontological study (foraminifera, ostracods and gastropods) and 14C dating. The results show that before the maximum transgression of the Mediterranean during the Marine Isotope Stage 1 (5500 cal yr. BP dating in the Almenara marsh), the area was occupied by a brackish marsh (prior to the 8.2 ka event). During the middle Holocene, the regional sea level rise and later stability caused an oligohaline/freshwater marsh with fluctuating water levels to form. This marsh occupied the entire area of today’s Almenara marsh at least between 7570 and 2780 cal yr BP. The results may indicate a phase of greater contribution of groundwater inputs (and rainfall/riverine discharge) during the middle Holocene as a response to a climatic phase characterized by higher humidity. Today, the marsh is filled with sediments from natural and anthropic processes related to the agricultural activity carried out throughout the area (except for the central part, which has been reclaimed as wetland). The water of the present-day marsh (like that prior to 8.2 ka event) is brackish, as is indicated by the benthic foraminiferal assemblage; this contrasts with the earlier oligohaline/freshwater marsh determined in the survey cores during the middle Holocene until the time of the Iberian culture.

Modern benthic foraminiferal assemblages are instrumental in providing information regarding changes in relative sea level as well as prevailing environmental conditions in marine environments. Marginal marine environments are coastal environments that are in most cases characterized by high influx of terrestrially originated nutrients. Inventorizing of modern benthic foraminiferal assemblages from such habitats can act as biotic indicators of water quality variations along with any changes in relative sea level. The present study documents the modern benthic foraminiferal assemblage from three major marginal marine habitats located along the North West coast of Bay of Bengal, in the Indian Ocean. Sediment samples for the purpose were thus collected from the Indian Sundarbans Delta, Chilika lagoon and the Gautami Godavari estuarine zone which encompasses the Kakinada bay. A total of 32 species of benthic foraminifera were documented during the study. The present observations were compared with previous reports of benthic foraminiferal diversity from these habitats and exhibited variability.

The Manassi section in Levkas Island belongs to the Pre-Apulian (Paxos) zone, the most external domain of the Hellenic realm. Its Early Tortonian sediments contain a rich foraminiferal fauna dominated, in numbers of individuals, by planktic species. Its benthic foraminiferal assemblage is characterized by a high number of taxa, with low numbers of individuals. Their study provides a basis for interpreting the paleobathymetry of the basin.The Manassi section represents deposition in upper to lower bathyal depths, during a period of intense tectonic activity. Downslope transport of fauna by turbidity currents partly overprints the signal of paleobathymetrically-diagnostic foraminifera distribution. The recognition of allochthonous taxa is used, together with %P, to identify turbidite beds intercalated with in-situ marly sediments. The micropaleontological and paleobathymetrical analyses of the studied sediments indicate that these correspond to distal atypical flysch deposited in the foredeep depozone of the most external domain (Pre-Apulian zone) of the Hellenide foreland basin.
