The concept of tafsiri şuhudi (transempirical exegesis) was coined for the first time by Said Nursi (d. 1960) and was reflected throughout his works. In his tafsiri şuhudi (pronounced shuhudi) methodology, Nursi views the Qur’an as an interpretation of the universe, that is Kitab al-Kabir (a big book). According to Nursi, such an exegesis is needed to reach the degree of iman tahkiki (investigative belief), also known as authentic faith. As part of his methodology, Nursi uses spiritual experience (kashf) and secular sciences as evidence for gaining true faith. Tafsiri şuhudi is an offshoot of ishari (inner meaning) tafsir but one that is injected with rationalism. This tafsir type also injects witnessing (şuhudi) into the dry body of scientific and modern tafsir that emerged in the Muslim world after European enlightenment. This article first examines the original hermeneutical concept of tafsir şuhudi in Nursi’s works and then analyses the sound heart, an essential part of iman tahkiki, in light of Nursi’s transempirical experience. The article argues that Nursi injects rationalism into the ishari tafsir methodology and infuses şuhudi experience by making it not only an epistemic but also an existential understanding of modern tafsir methodology.

This paper aims to describe the da’wa strategy of the Nurcu movement in the dynamics of ideologies in Turkey during Erdogan's reign, as well as its correlation with Al-Madkhal Ila Ilmi Dakwah's book by Al Bayanuni. The existence of the three ideologies that developed in Turkey, namely Islamism, western ideology, and nationalism, is still developing today. Various reforms and branches of each movement have colored the socio-political life in Turkey. One example of being part of a reformer is the Nurcu Movement, which is part of the Islamism group. This movement was led by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi with his monumental work entitled Risale-i Nur (Faiz, 2017). Said Nursi was one of the figures who initiated resistance to government policies during the Ataturk era. The resistance carried out by Nursi did not use weapons, but with a different da'wah strategy This paper is a literature study, with a historical analysis approach to the Nurcu Movement in Turkey through the work of other relevant researchers. The study results show that the da’wa strategy used by the Nurcu movement is persuasive, logic, and dialogue. In addition, the Nurcu movement also used three da’wa strategies according to Al-Bayanunni namely al-athifi, al-aqly, and al-hissi. This movement spread its da'wa by entering into five fields, namely social, journalist, media, education and economics. The preaching strategy of the Nurcu movement can be said to be successful because it is able to survive and continue to exist today

Abstract There is a tendency in the literature to emphasise how contemporary Islamic movements promote ways of living a pious Muslim life alternative to those proposed by secular liberal modernity. For this reason, the domains of religious and civic engagement have often been thought of as opposed to each other. In counterpoint to this tendency, the paper explores the intertwining of national views about mass education and modern citizenship with a renewed Islamic emphasis on the need for moral and ethical reform of society within the Nur movement in modern Turkey. Methodologically, the paper draws upon ethnographic material from research conducted in 2010 on the Suffa community in Istanbul, as well as on an account of the life and projects of the leader of the movement, Said Nursi, mainly drawn from secondary sources. This case is explored in light of the theories of successive modernities that inspired the analytical framework for the Modern Muslim Subjectivities Project applied in this special issue. In so doing, it illustrates the complex nexus that Nursi established between long-standing views of Islamic ethics and modern perspectives on education and civic engagement in response to the emergence of the modern nation-state in the first half of the 20th century.

AbstractTo understand divine providence, we need to understand the natural order and our place in it. Such inquiry leads to a rethinking of what we usually construe as explanation, especially the causal explanations we employ in everyday life and in modern science. Nursi and Altaie offer examples of how to do that rethinking. In light of cues from the Quran, they pay attention to empirical data and offer interpretations that are both intellectually and existentially compelling.

The study of hatred that emerges as human nature can provide an analytical picture of how hatred arises, develops, and turns into humanitarian incidents. With an in-depth, systematic, and genealogical study, it can come up with a panacea for this hatred. The elixir can turn hatred into compassion, violence into nonviolence, and find creative ways to turn conflict into peace; thus, creating a new, better reality. This qualitative research uses a literature study from Risale-i Nur by Bediüzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960). In this study, Nursi's religious and psychological explanations are compared with religious theories and studies of peace and conflict that are already popular in the Western world. The data in Risale-i Nur were analysed using the Mimesis theoretical framework of the philosophical approach. With this analysis there is the prefiguration stage (Mimesis I) about the background of Said Nursi's life, the configuration stage (Mimesis II) about the story of Said Nursi's traumatic experience, and the transfiguration stage about the emergence of the capacity to handle conflict independently with others using nonviolent ideas creatively, thus creating a new reality (Mimesis III). This new reality is "nonviolent Islam," which transforms conflict nonviolently, overcoming hatred with compassion and forgiveness. This statement is based on the argument that hatred is the root of violence, and Said Nursi can escape the trap of hatred through compassion and forgiveness. This study can contribute ideas to the study of moral philosophy and can also be used as a reference for training modules and sharing experiences to reduce conflict in society or between communities.
