In comforting or distressing circumstances, individuals tend to have various perceptions of themselves. It seems that religious comfort and religious distress correlate differently with people’s self-esteem. Since the relationship between religiosity and self-esteem is not only direct but can be mediated by other factors that are recognized as buffers against adverse situations, our main goal was to verify whether dispositional gratitude may have an indirect effect on the association between both variables. The research involved data from 254 participants aged 18 to 25 (M = 21.24; SD = 2.09) and included 192 women (76%) and 62 men (24%). To measure the title variables, we used: the Religious Comfort and Strain Scale (RCSS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6). The results showed that people who consider religion as a source of comfort express positive attitudes toward the self and recognize others’ kindness, as well. In contrast, people who consider religiosity as a cause of fear, stress, and internal strain tend to display a lower subjective sense of personal worth and lower appreciation of the positivity around them. Moreover, gratitude had a mediatory effect on the relationships between religious comfort/negative emotions toward God and self-esteem.

This work was focused on revealing the relation between the microstructure and corrosion dynamics in dilute Mg97.94Zn0.56Y1.5 (at.%) alloys prepared by the consolidation of rapidly solidified (RS) ribbons. The dynamics of the corrosion were followed by common electrochemical methods and the acoustic emission (AE) technique. AE monitoring offers instantaneous feedback on changes in the dynamics and mode of the corrosion. In contrast, the electrochemical measurements were performed on the specimens, which had already been immersed in the solution for a pre-defined time. Thus, some short-term corrosion processes could remain undiscovered. Obtained results were completed by scanning electron microscopy, including analysis of a cross-section of the corrosion layer. It was shown that the internal strain distribution, the grain morphology, and the distribution of the secondary phases play a significant role in the corrosion. The alloys are characterized by a complex microstructure with elongated worked and dynamically recrystallized α-Mg grains with an average grain size of 900 nm. Moreover, the Zn- and Y-rich stacking faults (SFs) were dispersed in the grain interior. In the alloy consolidated at a lower extrusion speed, the homogeneous internal strain distribution led to uniform corrosion with a rate of 2 mm/year and a low hydrogen release. The consolidation at a higher extrusion speed resulted in the formation of uneven distribution of internal strains with remaining high strain levels in non-recrystallized grains, leading to inhomogeneous growth and breakdown of the corrosion layers. Therefore, homogeneity of the internal strain distribution is of key importance for the uniform formation of a protective layer.

Abstract. Dating syntectonic sedimentary sequences is often seen as the unique way to constrain the initiation, duration, and rate of folding as well as the sequence of deformation in the shallow crust. Beyond fold growth, however, deformation mesostructures accommodate the internal strain of pre-folding strata before, during, and after strata tilting. Absolute dating of syn-folding mesostructures may help constrain the duration of fold growth in the absence of preserved growth strata. Absolute dating of mesostructures related to early-folding layer-parallel shortening and late fold tightening provides an access to the timing and duration of the entire folding event. We compile available ages from the literature and provide new U–Pb ages of calcite cements from veins and faults from four folds (Apennines, Pyrenees, Rocky Mountains). Our results not only better constrain the timing of fold growth but also reveal a contraction preceding and following folding, the duration of which might be a function of the tectonic style and regional sequence of deformation. This study paves the way for a better appraisal of folding lifetime and processes and stress evolution in folded domains.

The bee wax has great historical importance and has been present since the evolution of civilizations. Currently, besides several uses of the wax, its recovery is indispensable for the rational management of swarms by beekeepers. The wax can be recovered from the combs using different techniques, however the conditions of the pre-extraction combs, such as their size, can influence the wax yield. Thus, studies must still be carried out to standardize the techniques and processes for extracting the wax from the combs, in order to improve the wax yield. This study aimed to evaluate the recovery of Apis mellifera wax according to the size of the comb using an alternative extraction technique. First, the influence of the comb size on wax recovery was evaluated. We used brown color combs, which were broken down into four sizes, each size representing a treatment, namely: Treatment I - 25 cm2; Treatment II - 16 cm2; Treatment III - 9 cm2 and Treatment IV - 4 cm2. Combs were submitted to the "internal strain" technique for 30 minutes of extraction, after boiling the water. The wax recovery was superior in treatment III (P <0.05). Wax recovery from treatment IV was similar to treatment II, which, in turn, showed similar recovery to treatment I (P <0.05). Besides, the wax recovery using 9 cm2 combs was evaluated by the commercial technique of "steam extraction" and the alternative technique of "internal strain", for a period of 30 minutes. The “internal strain” technique showed greater wax recovery than the “steam extraction” technique (P <0.01). The use of alternative wax recovery together with 9 cm2 combs size may optimize the wax extraction process, in terms that it decreases the time of exposure of the wax to heat, and thus positively affect the quality of the final product.
