Food habits of belida fish (Notopterus notopterus, Pallas 1769) in Sei Gesek Reservoir, Bintan Regency, Riau Island, Indonesia

Sei Gesek Reservoir is located in Bintan Regency, Riau Island Province. The reservoir is one source of water for the community in Tanjungpinang City. One of the freshwater fish that inhabit the Sei Gesek Reservoir is the belida fish (Notopterus notopterus). The objective of this study was to the Relative Length of the Gut (RLG), type and food composition of belida fish (N. notopterus), and food comparative in the digestive tract of the belida fish (N. notopterus) with food resources in the substrate Sei Gesek reservoir, Bintan Regency, Riau Island. The method used in this research was the survey method. A sampling of belida fish (N. notopterus) was carried out in three months according to the fishing grounds. The data analysis used is Relative Length of the Gut (RLG), Index of Preponderance (IP), and Index of Electivity (E). The result showed that the total fish caught was 30, there were 16 males and 14 females. The relative length of the gut female and male belida fish (N. notopterus) were 0.21 and 0.25 respectively. Based on the relative length of the gut value, belida fish (N. notopterus) was classified as a carnivore. The food types of belida fish (N. notopterus) were fish, crustaceans, microalgae, macrophytes, annelids, nematodes, and detritus. Index of preponderance showed that the main food of belida fish (N. notopterus) in Sei Gesek Reservoir was small fish based on sex, the month of capture, and body length measurement. Index of electivity showed that the food type from the microalgae is Asterionella sp. and Closterium sp. not selected by belida fish (N. notopterus) as food.

Physicochemical quality assessment of salt-free fermented fish products of Sylhet region, Bangladesh

Shidals are popular salt-free fermented fish products of Sylhet region of Bangladesh due to their distinctive flavor and taste. In this study, the proximate composition, physicochemical and antioxidative potential had been studied of three kinds of shidals prepared from punti (Puntius sophore), kangla (Notopterus notopterus) and bashpata (Setipinna phasa) available in the local markets. The results of the investigation suggested that shidals are a good source of protein content ranging from 30.49% to 38.27%. The pH, moisture, crude fat, ash and carbohydrate content ranged from 6.09%-6.74%, 34.46%-35.33%, 17.48%-21.43%, 06.31%-13.05% and 1.20%-1.73% correspondingly. DPPH radical scavenging activity of punti, kangla and bashpata shidals was found 68.13±2.45, 53.95±1.52, 73.88±1.21 respectively. Total Volatile Base Nitrogen (TVB-N) content ranged from 37.57-57.92 mg.100 g-1. These findings suggested that fermented fish products are a good source of nutrients for the local peoples.

MORPHOMETRIC AND MERISTIC ANALYSIS OF ASIAN KNIFEFISH (Notopterus notopterus) IN SAIL RIVER, PEKANBARU RIAU PROVINCE

This study was conducted from January-April 2017 located in Sail River, Pekanbaru City, Riau Province. The aim of this study was to investigate morphometric and meristic characters of Asian knifefish (Notopterus notopterus) besides as the most accurate initial identification of certain species. Fish samples were collected using sero (traditional setnet) to be further observed for their morphometric and meristic characters using ruler of 50 cm. Morphometric analysis applied to the Asian knifefish resulted in 23 characteristics. The highest value was found in the total length (TL) of female fish which reached 135-270 mm, while the lowest was in the characteristic of snout length (SNL) in male fish of 1,3-1,8 mm. A total of 8 meristic characteristics were observed, included: Dorsal fin rays (D), Pectoral fin rays (P), Ventral fin rays (V), Anal fin rays (A), Scales before dorsal fins, Circumference scales, Scales at caudal peduncle, and Scales along lateral line. According to its morphological characters, Asian knifefish has a flat body with sideways-elongated oval shaped and a humpback appearance. The shape of head near the back is relatively straight and scaly. The mouth of this species has protractile structure (able to protrude) with a terminal position and no tentacles. Asian knifefish has a large size of mouth opening as they are carnivorous fish. Adult fish has an evenly brown color, slightly concave dorsal shape, dark bands all over the body; and white-silver head color with enormous small gray spots. The fish body is covered with cycloid scales.

Aspek Biologi Ikan Belida (Notopterus notopterus) Pada Perairan Rawa Sungai Barumun Sebagai Upaya Monitoring Perlindunga

Ikan Belida adalah salah satu ikan endemik di Sumatera yang sudah dilindungi. Kawasan perairan rawa Sungai Barumun diketahui sebagai habitat hidupnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aspek biologi ikan belida di daerah rawa Sungai Barumun. Penelitian ini sebagai upaya observasi untuk mengetahui aspek biologi terkait pola pertumbuhan dan nisbah kelamin. Pola pertumbuhan dan nisbah kelamin dijadikan sebagai sebagai indikator untuk kondisi populasinya di alam. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksploratif, stasiun pengamatan ditentukan dengan metode Purposive sampling. pola pertumbuhan ikan belida menunjukan allometrik negative. Nisbah kelamin jantan dan betina ikan belida diketahui dengan perbandian 1,2:0,8. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan kondisi populasi ikan belida di kawasan perairan rawa Sungai Barumun dalam Kondisi terancam. Perlu dilakukan upaya konservasi habitat, sehingga populasinya di alam bisa terjaga.
