Abstract Trust between actors is vital to delivering positive health outcomes, while relationships of power determine health agendas, whose voices are heard and who benefits from global health initiatives. However, the relationship between trust and power has been neglected in the literatures on both international politics and global health. We examine this relationship through a study of relations between faith based organisations (FBO) and donors in Malawi and Zambia, drawing on 66 key informant interviews with actors central to delivering health care. From these two cases we develop an understanding of ‘trust as belonging’, which we define as the exercise of discretion accompanied by the expression of shared identities. Trust as belonging interacts with power in what we term the ‘power-trust cycle’, in which various forms of power undergird trust, and trust augments these forms of power. The power-trust cycle has a critical bearing on global health outcomes, affecting the space within which both local and international actors jockey to influence the ideologies that underpin global health, and the distribution of crucial resources. We illustrate how the power-trust cycle can work in both positive and negative ways to affect possible cooperation, with significant implications for collective responses to global health challenges.

Tax literature indicates perception of corruption and perception of tax complexity as tax compliance factors. Nevertheless, although the initial SSF theory suggests several tax compliance factors to have associations with trust in and power of tax authorities, none of the SSF studies pay their attention on these two factors. Therefore, based on survey questionnaires on 500 individual taxpayers in Jakarta, Indonesia, as well as interviews on several taxpayers and tax officers in the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT), this study is dedicated to elaborating the associations between these factors and trust and power and how the change in financial information access affects them. Mixed methods research was used through conducting a survey of individual taxpayers, and interviewing both individual taxpayers and tax officers. The results show that the factors are proven to have significant influence on trust in and power of the tax authorities, even though there is no significant association between perception of tax complexity and power. The results also confirm main SSF assumptions that trust leads to voluntary compliance while voluntary compliance positively affects overall tax compliance. Yet, the study fails to evidence the relationship of power to enforced compliance, while enforced compliance is found to negatively affects overall tax compliance.

PurposeTo explore how and why the social structures of strategic partnerships are shaped by actors and how these interrelate with a team's interpersonal relationships over time. Grasping the complexity of this interplay is essential if we want to comprehend what actually goes on in these partnerships and understand why actors often disengage from them.Design/methodology/approachIn three cases, 14 in-depth interviews were held with knowledgeable actors about important events and activities that influenced the relationships between partners. Interview data were triangulated with journals kept by the lead author, who participated as an engaged scholar in the three cases. Because this study took an interdisciplinary approach, new insights could evolve from the multi-level analysis.FindingsTrust has a moderating effect on the relation between open-book accounting and the degree of control a dominant party wants to exercise. When the level of control is raised, this can signal distrust to the other partners, which can harm the relationship. When partners feel more dependent on each other's capabilities to reach their long-term goals, the parties seem to be less likely to put the blame on one of the partners in the case of undesirable events.Practical implicationsManagers should be aware of their power position and acknowledge the effects of power on their relationships. If long-term and close collaboration does not emerge in their partnership, it may be due to how they use their power position.Originality/valueThanks to the interdisciplinary approach, this is the first study that shows the significance of trust and power in maintaining strategic partnerships in the construction industry, and how trust can affect the financial rules of actors.

Despite the legalisation of cannabis based medicinal products (CBMPs) in the UK in November 2018, today there remains a scarcity of NHS prescriptions, and many patients continue to face unsustainable financial costs to acquire their medicines. Following on from our previous quantitative study highlighting the effectiveness of CBMPs to treat severe intractable childhood-onset epilepsy, for the present study, we used a narrative, open-ended approach to interview parents/carers of these patients. 11 families were interviewed to understand their current situation in more depth, and to contextualise the previous findings. Although these families have found CBMPs to be the most effective treatment for their child’s condition, access to these medicines remains severely restricted, causing serious challenges in their day-to-day life. Participants discussed a broad range of issues associated with medical cannabis. These included the regulation and policy surrounding medical cannabis, the anger and desperation related to these policies, and the benefits and harms of it. Evidently, the benefits of medical cannabis for these patients far outweigh any associated risks. Many of the issues raised in our study go beyond the science of medical cannabis per se. Rather, they are political issues, related to the wider issue of trust and power in society, and associated challenges of the doctor and patient relationship. The findings highlight the importance of including patients in decision-making about their medical plans and the value that should be given to their reported outcomes and wishes. We conclude by offering implications for further research and for policy making so that these families, and others like them, can finally receive the medications they so urgently require without crippling financial costs.
