This study presents a novel switching scheme for three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters. The proposed switching method independently drives the upper- and lower-arm elements of the inverter based on the polarity information of the reference current. The proposed switching scheme does not require the inclusion of dead-time for each switching, except when the current polarity changes. Therefore, unlike the conventional inverter switching method, dead-time compensation is not needed, and the possibility of an arm-short accident is prevented. In this study, a switching procedure is detailed, and the operation mode analysis of the proposed switching scheme is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed switching method is verified experimentally by application to a grid-connected inverter that requires inverter current control.

AbstractThe east–west component of magnetic field variation (∆D-component) at Davao station (Philippines, geomagnetic latitude: – 2.22˚N) are used to investigate the characteristics of the long-term Inter-Hemispheric Field-Aligned Currents (IHFACs) based on the time-series analysis from August 1998 to July 2020. Recent in situ satellite and ground-based observations have reported that dusk-side current polarity of IHFAC is often opposite to that of the noon IHFAC, being inconsistent with Fukushima's IHFACs model. We investigated the consistency of the dusk-side IHFAC polarity derived from the observations with the polarity expected from Fukushima’s IHFACs model and examined the solar cycle dependence of IHFACs. It was confirmed that the dusk-side IHFACs during June and December solstices flow in the same direction of the noontime IHFACs, which was consistent with the IHFAC polarities suggested by the Fukushima model. The dusk-side IHFACs around March and September–November months disagreed with the Fukushima model. The ∆D variations clearly showed seasonal asymmetry in the dawn and noon sectors, whereas the ∆D variations in the dusk sector demonstrated seasonal symmetry. Solar cycle dependence of IHFACs was exhibited in the dusk sector. For the dawn and noon sectors, the yearly peak-to-peak ∆D amplitude in the later solar cycle SC24 decreased by about 35% in comparison with the earlier solar cycle SC23. In contrast, the dusk-side yearly peak-to-peak ∆D amplitude increased by about 200%. The dusk-side IHFAC yearly amplitude tended to be in inverse proportion to solar activity.

AbstractWe demonstrate thermo-electrochemical (TEC) conversion using a biocompatible redox couple of lactic acid and pyruvic acid on earth-abundant TiO2. The TEC cell exhibited a positive Seebeck coefficient of 1.40 mV K−1. DFT calculations figured out that the adsorption of intermediate species and protons on TiO2 controls both the redox reaction and current polarity.

Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia (CIAS) is the most critical predictor of functional outcome. Limited understanding of the cellular mechanisms of CIAS hampers development of more effective treatments. We found that in subchronic phencyclidine (scPCP)–treated mice, an animal model that mimics CIAS, the reversal potential of GABAA currents in pyramidal neurons of the infralimbic prefrontal cortex (ILC) shifts from hyperpolarizing to depolarizing, the result of increased expression of the chloride transporter NKCC1. Further, we found that in scPCP mice, the NKCC1 antagonist bumetanide normalizes GABAA current polarity ex vivo and improves performance in multiple cognitive tasks in vivo. This behavioral effect was mimicked by selective, bilateral, NKCC1 knockdown in the ILC. Thus, we show that depolarizing GABAA currents in the ILC contributes to cognitive impairments in scPCP mice and suggest that bumetanide, an FDA-approved drug, has potential to treat or prevent CIAS and other components of the schizophrenia syndrome.

Due to the nonlinearities of the voltage-source inverter (VSI) in a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive system, there is always an error between the reference voltage and the actual output voltage. To compensate the voltage error, many schemes have been proposed based on the phase current polarity. However, due to factors such as current clamping, measurement noises, and control system delay, the accuracy of the detected current polarity is relatively low, especially when the current is around zero, which would therefore affect the compensation performance. To solve this issue, a deadbeat prediction-based current zero-crossing detection method (DP-CZD) is proposed in this paper. With the proposed method, the measured three-phase currents are replaced by the predicted three-phase currents in terms of the polarity determination, when the absolute value of the phase current is within the threshold range. Compared with the conventional phase current polarity detecting methods, the proposed method can greatly improve the accuracy of detected current polarity due to its smooth transient waveform, and consequently, contributes to the much higher accuracy and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) in the compensation of VSI nonlinearity, which is verified through a prototype surface-mounted PMSM.

Although an imbalance of buying and selling profoundly affects the formation of market trends, a fine-granularity investigation of this perplexity of trading behavior is still missing. Instead of using existing entropy measures, this paper proposed a new indicator based on transaction dataset that enables us to inspect both the direction and the magnitude of this imbalance at high frequency, which we call “polarity”. The polarity aims to measure the unevenness of the very essence trading desire based on the most micro decision making units. We investigate the relationship between the polarity and the return at both market-level and stock-level and find that the autocorrelated polarities cause a positive relation between lagged polarities and returns, while the current polarity is the opposite. It is also revealed that these associations shift according to the market conditions. In fact, when aggregating the one-minute polarities into daily signals, we find not only significant correlations disclosed by the market polarity and market emotion, but also the reliability of these signals in terms of reflecting the transitions of market-level behavior. These results imply that our presented polarity can reflect the market sentiment and condition in real time. Indeed, the trading polarity provides a new indicator from a high-frequency perspective to understand and foresee the market’s behavior in a data-driven manner.
