This paper focusses on the design of optimal control strategies for a variable-speed wind energy system based on Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). The fractional order PI controller, denoted PIλ, is an extension of the classical PI controller, which provides greater flexibility, better performance and robustness, however the tuning of the controller parameters is challenging. In this work, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) provide approximate solutions to various problems and form a good optimization. In our system, they are used to have the PI regulator parameters and tune the parameters of the proposed controllers. The proposed controllers have been applied as maximum power point (MPPT) controllers for the wind turbine and to regulate the PMGS currents under variable weather conditions and. The results show that, among all these controllers, the fractional order PI controller optimized by the PSO leads to better performance in terms of the transient response characteristics such overshoot, rise time and settling time.

In a grid-connected power generation system, the grid-connected current of the inverter is sensitive to nonlinear factors such as periodic disturbance of grid voltage, which results in grid-connected current waveform distortion. By establishing a single-phase photovoltaic grid-connected inverter control system model, designing an inverse current fractional-order PI (PIλ or FO-PI) controller and the dynamic and steady-state performance, antidisturbance and grid connection inversion characteristics of the system are simulated and compared under the action of the integer-order PI controller and fractional-order PI controller. The quality of the inverter grid-connected current is analyzed by using the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The simulation results show that the fractional-order control system can reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid-connected current and dynamic performance and antidisturbance ability of the improving system while satisfying the steady-state performance indexes.

The robotic neck mechanism considered in this paper has as main element a soft link that emulates a human neck with two DOF (flexion, extension and lateral bending). The mechanism is based on a Cable-Driven Parallel Mechanism (CDPM) with components easy to manufacture in a 3D printer.Due to the soft link properties and the platform mechanics, it is important to provide a robust control system. Two designs, a robust PID controller and a Fractional Order PI controller (FOPI) are proposed and compared, the fractional order control showing an enhanced performance. Both control approaches are tested in the real prototype, validating the soft neck feasibility and showing the robustness of the platform to mass changes at the neck tip.

Abstract In this paper, a systematic design and high accuracy implementation of fractional order proportional integral (FOPI) controller is proposed for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) speed system, and the numerical implementation performance of the fractional order operator is evaluated with comprehensive investigation using different implementation methods. Three commonly used numerical implementation methods of fractional operators are investigated and compared in this paper. Futhermore, for the impulse response invariant method, the effects of different discretization orders on the system control performance are compared. The simulation results show that the high accuracy numerical implementation method of the designed high-order FOPI controller has improved performance over normal accuracy fractional order operation implementation.
