Abstract BP returned to Caspian deepwater exploratory drilling in 2019. The exploration well was drilled on the Shafag-Asiman structure in water depths greater than 2,000 ft. Well challenges included high shallow water flow (SWF) risk with multiple re-spuds on the nearest offset, lost circulation due to complex wellbore geometry combined with a narrow pore and fracture gradient window, and uncertainty in pore pressure prediction in abnormally pressured formations with a new depositional model. In addition, a well total depth more than 23,000 ft, eight string casing design and bottom-hole pressures greater than 20,000 psi presented a truly modern-day challenge to well integrity. A six-month planning phase for the cementing basis of design concluded by delivering slurry designs capable of combating SWF, qualified by variable-speed rotational gel strength measurement. Engineered lost circulation with selective placement of wellbore strengthening materials in combination with cement and mechanical barriers to provide isolation and integrity for the life of the well. Exhaustive pilot testing to account for changes required a cement design based on pore pressure variation and comprehensive modeling for hydraulics, centralizer placement, and mud displacement. This was complemented by a custom centralizer testing process specifically designed to simulate forces exerted in wells with similar complexity. Long-term effects on cement were evaluated, not only for placement but also for future operations including pressure and temperature cycles during wellbore construction or abandonment.

<p>Ecologists have increasingly favoured the use of camera traps in studies of animal populations and their behaviour. Because camera trap study design commonly implements non-random selective placement, we must consider how this placement strategy affects the integrity of our data collection. Selective placement of camera traps have the benefits of 1) maximizing the probability of encounter events by sampling habitats or microhabitats of known significance to a focus or closely-related species and 2) reducing data collection and maintenance effort in the field by situating cameras along more easily-accessible landscape features. Introducing a non-random survey method, such as selective placement, into a project studying a species or community that also expresses non-random habitat use may lead to unintentionally biased data and inaccurate results. By using a paired on-trail/off-trail camera-trap study design, my aim is to investigate potential differences in popular ecological indices, species detection probability (p) using multi-method occupancy models, and intraspecific temporal activity for a terrestrial community in Gunung Palung National Park in Indonesian Borneo. Differences in detection probability between on and off-trail cameras were compared against species characteristics (including body size, diet, and taxonomic group) to find potential correlations. While several species exhibited a significant difference in detection probability between cameras placed on foot trails and those placed randomly off-trail, there was no measured community trend. This stresses my conclusion further that a non-random study design leaves results open to bias from unknown patterns in detection due to underlying variation in behaviour and microhabitat use. Selective placement may be effective for increasing detection probability for some species but can also lead to substantial bias if the features selected for are not explicitly taken into account within the analysis or balanced with a control in the study design. In addition, a positive interactive effect was found between on trail species detection and body size for the terrestrial omnivore guild, and three species presented significant variation in temporal activity between camera placement types. This provides evidence that camera placement not only affects species state parameters and indices but has a noticeable impact on behavioural observations that require accountability as well.</p>

Helium ion beam induced deposition using the gaseous precursor pentamethylcyclopentasiloxane is employed to fabricate high aspect ratio insulator nanostructures (nanopillars and nanocylinders) that exhibit charge induced branching. The branched nanostructures are analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the side branches form above a certain threshold height and that by increasing the flow rate of the precursor, the vertical growth rate and branching phenomenon can be significantly enhanced, with fractalesque branching patterns observed. The direct-write ion beam nanofabrication technique described herein offers a fast single-step method for the growth of high aspect ratio branched nanostructures with site-selective placement on the nanometer scale.

The article summarizes the views on the current socio-political, cultural and economic situation in the context of sociological research in journalism. The study is aimed at analyzing the views of young people on what traditional religions they follow, the level of their religious knowledge and what they should do against the activities of non-traditional religious movements and religious extremist organizations and their destructive activities. The article, written using research methods such as pilot studies, rapid surveys, focus group interviews, uses the method of multistage random sampling of sociology in journalism. Quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection have been implemented. The methods were used to organize and use focus groups, store, process, compare statistics, use the results in media research, select new methods and queries. The effectiveness of sociological research, the choice of respondents, open and closed types, survey methods (questionnaires, content analysis, expert interviews, in-depth interviews, telephone interviews, etc.) are considered. The goals and objectives of content analysis in the media are also clearly formulated. Methods used were social media polls, selective placement by industry, and random polls. The problems of sociological research (organization, planning, recognition of social reality) in the work of the editorial board were not left aside.

Block copolymers (BCPs), through their self-assembly, provide an excellent guiding platform for precise controlled localization of maghemite nanoparticles (MNPs). Diblock copolymers (di/BCP) represent the most applied matrix to host filler components due to their morphological simplicity. A series of nanocomposites based on diblock copolymer or triblock terpolymer matrices and magnetic nanoparticles were prepared to study and compare the influence of an additional block into the BCP matrix. MNPs were grafted with low molecular weight polystyrene (PS) chains in order to be segregated in a specific phase of the matrix to induce selective localization. After the mixing of the BCPs with 10% w/v PS-g-MNPs, nanocomposite thin films were formed by spin coating. Solvent vapor annealing (SVA) enabled the PS-g-MNPs selective placement within the PS domains of the BCPs, as revealed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The recorded images have proven that high amounts of functionalized MNPs can be controllably localized within the same block (PS), despite the architecture of the BCPs (AB vs. ABC). The adopted lamellar structure of the “neat” BCP thin films was maintained for MNPs loading approximately up to 10% w/v, while, for higher content, the BCP adopted lamellar morphology is partially disrupted, or even disappears for both AB and ABC architectures.

Although 3D printing has been extensively used to create passive machines and mechanisms, 3D printing of actuators is a relatively new concept. 3D printing of actuators allows greater customization, accelerates the design and development, and consequently saves time and money. We present the design and fabrication of a 3D printed, miniature size, double-acting, On-Off type, linear pneumatic actuator. The actuator has an overall length of 8 cm, a bore size of 1.5 cm, and a stroke length of 2.0 cm. The overall weight is 12 gm and it generates a peak output power of 2 W when operating at an input air pressure of 40 psi ( 275 . 79 kPa). This paper demonstrates novel methods to solve the challenges that arise during fabrication that include: (1) chemical post-processing to achieve airtight sealing and a smooth surface finish, (2) strategic placement of a metallic part within 3D printed plastic for higher strength, (3) design of an airtight seal between the cylinder and piston head, (4) chemical bonding of printed parts using adhesive, and (5) use of a lubricant to reduce friction and improve force generation. The power-to-weight ratio of our actuator is comparable to that of high-end commercial actuators of similar size. The utility of the actuator is demonstrated in a series of jumping experiments with the actuator and by incorporating the actuator into a hopping robot inspired by Disney/Pixar Luxo lamp. We conclude that 3D printed pneumatic actuators combine the high power of pneumatics with the low weight of plastics, and structural strength through the selective placement of metal parts, thus offering a promising actuator for robotic applications.

Introduction: With improved life expectancy and quality of life, elderly patients constitute a progressively larger fraction of consumers utilising renal replacement therapy (RRT). Although substantial data exist for younger cohorts, minimal evidence exists for outcomes of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) and central catheters (CVC) placed in those patients over 80 years. We examined outcomes of primary AVF placement in this cohort to ascertain durability and benefits of AVF in the over 80-year-old population. Methods: Retrospective analysis was undertaken of all autogenous AVFs and CVCs placed in patients aged over 80 years at Gold Coast University Hospital between March 2010 and February 2016. Prospectively collected demographic data, co-morbidities and operative factors were analysed. Results: Sixty-five AVF and 12 CVC patients were identified. Mean age at intervention was 83.9 years and 76% of the patients were male. The majority of procedures were autogenous radio-cephalic AVF; median post-operative length of stay was 2 days. Cumulative AVF patient survival at 12 and 24 months was 82% and 72%, respectively. This was significantly better than survival rates of CVC patients, with 12-month survival of 45%. Primary patency at 6, 12 and 24 months was 58%, 39% and 31%. There were 113 follow-up procedures in 41 patients required to maintain patency. Conclusions: Although patency rates are inferior and re-intervention rates higher than in younger patients, AVF can be a durable option for RRT in selected elderly patients with improved mortality rates compared with CVC. Age alone should not preclude primary AVF placement.
