Crustacean female sex hormone (CFSH) plays a pivotal role in the development of secondary sex characteristics in dioecious crustaceans. However, until now the knowledge concerning its functions in hermaphroditic species is scanty. Herein, we explored the function of CFSH (Lvit-CFSH1a) in the peppermint shrimp Lysmata vittata, a species characterized by a rare reproductive system of protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism (PSH). Lvit-CFSH1a cDNA was 1,220-bp in length with a 720-bp ORF encoded a polypeptide of 239-aa. RT-PCR showed that Lvit-CFSH1a was exclusively expressed in the eyestalk ganglion. For female physiology, it was found that Lvit-CFSH1a was indispensable for the development of female gonopores, but it might not involve vitellogenesis of the species. For male physiology, Lvit-CFSH1a suppressed Lvit-IAG2 expression in short-term silencing experiment and recombinant protein injection experiment, but did not affect male sexual differentiation in long-term silencing experiment. In addition, silencing the Lvit-CFSH1a gene impeded individual growth in L. vittata.

The precocious puberty is an urgent problem of pediatric endocrinology characterized by clinical and pathogenetic heterogeneity. The appearance of secondary sex characteristics before the age of 8 years in girls and 9 years in boys requires timely diagnosis and the appointment of pathogenetically justified treatment in order to achieve the target indicators of final growth and prevent social deprivation. The developed clinical guidelines are the main working tool of the practitioner. They briefly and structurally present the main information about the epidemiology and modern classification of рrecocious puberty, methods of its diagnosis and treatment based on the principles of evidence-based medicine.

The hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) axis regulates many critical features in vertebrates. Utilizing TALENs and CRISPR/Cas9 techniques, thyroid-stimulating hormone subunit beta a (tshba), thyroglobulin (tg), and solute carrier family 16 member 2 (slc16a2) mutant zebrafish lines were generated. Among the three mutants, the earliest time point for the significantly altered T3 contents was observed in tshba mutants, which resulted in the most severe defects, including typical defects such as the retardation of inflated anterior swimming bladder (aSB), proper formation of fin ray and posterior squamation (SP), the larval-to-juvenile transition (LTJT) process, juvenile growth retardation, and mating failure. In tg mutants, which are actually compensated with an alternative splicing form, growth retardation was observed in the juvenile stage without LTJT and reproductive defects. The evident goiter phenotype was only observed in tg- and slc16a2 mutants, but not in tshba mutants. Other than goiters being observed, no other significant developmental defects were found in the slc16a2 mutants. Regarding the reproductive defects observed in tshba mutants, the defective formation of the secondary sex characteristics (SSCs) was observed, while no obvious alterations during gonad development were found. Based on our analyses, zebrafish at the 6–12 mm standard length or 16–35 days post-fertilization (dpf) should be considered to be in their LTJT phase. Using a series of zebrafish dyshormonogenesis models, this study demonstrated that the TSH function is critical for the proper promotion of zebrafish LTJT and SSC formation. In addition, the elevation of TSH levels appears to be essential for goiter appearance in zebrafish.

Ecological conditions provide information about available resources for one’s environment. In humans, this has been shown to influence reproductive behavior, as individuals may engage in trade-offs between partner quality and investment. For instance, many women may trade-off preferences for men with physical features indicative of social dominance and health over physical features indicative of commitment and investment. The current study explored women’s preferences for formidable men under safe vs. harsh ecological conditions. Across three studies, U.S. university women ( N = 1,098) were randomly assigned to a perceived harsh or safe ecological condition. They were asked to rate the attractiveness of men’s body types (i.e., muscular vs. less muscular). Findings revealed that in general, women rated stronger men as more attractive than weaker men irrespective of the ecological condition. Evidence for preference as a function of ecology appeared only when a two-alternative forced-choice task was used (Study 3), but not in rating tasks (Studies 1 and 2). Study 3 showed that women had a relatively stronger preference for stronger men for short-term relationships in a resource scarce ecological condition. This research provides some evidence that perceived ecological conditions can drive women’s preferences for men with enhanced secondary sex characteristics as a function of mating context. These findings are consistent with previous research indicating the importance of physical characteristics in men’s attractiveness, and it adds to the existing literature on ecological factors and mating preferences.

Puberty is a normal physiological process of during which children develop secondary sex characteristics, experience growth acceleration, and achieve bone maturation and reproductive competence. The onset of puberty is initiated by the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Precocious puberty is defined as the appearance of secondary sex characteristic at an age younger than 8 years in girls and 9 years in boys, or the beginning of menstruation before 9 years in girls. The most common etiology of central precocious puberty (CPP) is idiopathic (>90.0% in girls and 25.0-60.0% in boys), in which at present the etiologies of idiopathic CPP in some patients can be identified to be from a mutation of KISS1 or MKRN3 genes. The standard treatment for CPP is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa). The aims of treatment are to halt and regress the pubertal status of the patient to the prepubertal state that is appropriate for their age, prevent early onset of menses and attenuate the loss of height potential consequence upon advanced skeletal maturation. A study of long-term follow-ups of former CPP women at the age of mid-20s to 50 years found that most of the participants had regular menstrual cycles. The marital status and the pregnancy rate were the same as in controlled group and were not different between the GnRHa-treated and untreated CPP women.

Adolescence is a transitional period between children and adults, where there is rapid growth, secondary sex characteristics arise, fertilization is achieved and psychological and cognitive changes occur. However, the level of adolescent knowledge about reproductive health is still low. As a result of the lack of knowledge of adolescents about reproductive health, among others, the increase in the number of unwanted pregnancy. Unwanted pregnancy in adolescents also occurs in one area in Yogyakarta city, so that community-based preventive interventions are needed. The intervention provided was in the form of psychoeducational activities for adolescents and parents. Parents are given intervention because they have a role in preventing unwanted pregnancies in adolescents, for example by maintaining effective communication with adolescents and getting used to being open mind. The results of this activity have proven to be effective because they can increase knowledge significantly.

Evolutionary psychologists propose that men’s conspicuous consumption facilitates mate attraction because it predicts resource investment in offspring. This article elaborates on the ultimate functions of men’s luxury displays based on Life History Theory. Three studies provide evidence for phenotypic mimicry, in which consumer product features mimicking male secondary sex characteristics indicate investment in mating competition, at the expense of paternal investment. Men owning shirts with larger luxury brand logos were rated higher on mating effort, lower on parental investment, higher on interest in brief sexual affairs, lower on interest in long-term committed romantic relationships, higher in attractiveness to women for brief sexual affairs, lower in attractiveness to women for long-term committed relationships, and higher in developmental environment unpredictability compared with men owning shirts displaying a smaller logo. Participants recognized the strategic use of luxury display properties across social contexts but did not consistently associate product properties with owners’ physiological characteristics.

The European lobster, Homarus gammarus, was sampled from September 2016 to August 2017, using pots and gillnets in the Eastern Adriatic Sea. Official landings were also analyzed (2008–2020). The majority of landings were from the Northern Adriatic and showed an increase of 18.5% over the study period. Results revealed an extremely low catch rate that fluctuated significantly by season. Dominance by specimens in the size classes of 90–110 mm carapace length (CL) was observed. Experimental design revealed spatial heterogeneity, with larger individuals caught further from the coast (>3 nm) and undersized specimens caught near the coast (<3 nm). With increasing CL and total length (TL), an increase in weight was higher in males than females. TL and abdomen width (AW) increased linearly with CL and were more pronounced in females. At 80 mm CL, females started to develop secondary sex characteristics with wider AW than males. The results suggest that the modern legal framework is appropriate for lobster fisheries and a longer fishing season is not advisable, despite a positive catch trend in the northern part of the sea. Additional efforts are desirable to reduce fishing pressure in the coastal part. The morphometric relationships could reveal population characteristics required as inputs in stock assessment analysis for effective management.

The Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a spectrum of anomalies arising from incomplete development of the Müllerian ducts, is characterised by congenital aplasia of the uterus and upper part of the vagina, often in the absence of other phenotypical abnormalities. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl referred to our endocrinology unit after an incidental finding of uterine agenesis during laparoscopy to correct suspected ovarian torsion. Initial transabdominal ultrasonography found no uterus. Given her normal secondary sex characteristics, karyotype and hormone profile, MRKH syndrome was initially diagnosed. However, after vaginal bleeding compatible with menstruation, repeat transabdominal ultrasonography and MRI revealed a left-deviated unicornuate uterus.

AbstractKnowledge of the impacts of sex on plant mortality and biomass production has scientific and practical importance. In the case of willows, we know relatively little about such effects. The main objective of this study was to evaluate whether the sex of individuals of different willow species determines their biomass and mortality. An additional goal was to determine whether the secondary sex characteristics, such as leaf traits, depend on sex. The experiment was conducted from 2011 to 2014 with 8100 plants comprising 150 willow genotypes, including 8 species, 16 interspecies hybrids, cultivars, and specimens differentiated by sex. Statistical analysis of the leaf traits revealed their relationship to sex. On average, male specimens have longer and wider leaves. They also have longer petioles. Males of the studied Salix genotypes were characterized by higher biomass and showed a greater survival rate than females but only under better site conditions; when the site conditions were poorer, males had higher mortality than females.
