This paper presents the results of voluminous experimental investigations conducted to analyze the influence of the welding procedure on the performance of regenerated gears. Cylindrical spur gears were tested, both newly manufactured and regenerated, in two fundamentally different ways: by hard facing (surfacing) with the “hard” filler metal (DUR 600-IG) and with the “soft” filler metal (EVB2CrMo) with subsequent cementation and quenching. The regeneration procedures were defined and executed, while, subsequently, the microstructure and microhardness of the hard-faced layers were established and measured, followed by checking the durability of the hard-faced teeth flanks. Finally, techno-economic analysis was performed to establish the rationality of the conducted regenerations, i.e., the costs of regenerated and newly manufactured teeth were compared. Based on the results of the conducted investigations, it was possible to establish the influence of the welding type on the performance characteristics (primarily the service life) of the regenerated gears. For individual reparatory hard facing, the procedure with the “hard” filler metal exhibited better characteristics, while for batch reparation of numerous damaged gears, the reparation with the “soft” filler metal, followed by cementation and heat treatment, might be more convenient.

The viability for dry coupling of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer components was investigated, using a thin foil of annealed silver as a filler material/coupling agent at each component interface. Criteria used for room temperature evaluation were centered on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and echo bandwidth, for a Li-Nb based transducer operating in pulse-echo mode. A normal clamping stress of only 25 MPa, applied repeatedly over three loading cycles on a precisely-aligned transducer stack, was sufficient to yield backwall echoes with a SNR greater than 25 dB, and a 3 dB bandwidth of approximately 65%. This compares to a SNR of 32 dB and a 3 dB bandwidth of 65%, achievable when all transducer interfaces were coupled with ultrasonic gel. The respective roles of a soft filler material, alignment of transducer components, cyclic clamping, component roughness, and component flatness were evaluated in achieving this high efficiency dry coupling, with transducer clamping forces far lower than previously reported. Preliminary high temperature tests indicate that this coupling method is suitable for high temperature and achieves signal quality comparable to that at room temperature with ultrasonic gel.

Purpose Babbitt bush is easy to cause severe adhesive wear due to unexpected journal fall. This paper aims to improve wear resistance of Babbitt bush. Design/methodology/approach A soft/hard hybrid surface mircoprofile of Babbitt alloy/steel was fabricated by a technology of laser texture combined with hot-pressing. The friction and wear performances of bare steel (steel-h), Babbitt bush on steel (steel-s) and Babbitt filled in dimples of steel (steel-hs) were conducted on a ball-on-disc tester under dry and lubricated conditions. Findings The results showed that wettability of steel-hs was enhanced by forming soft/hard hybrid surface. Compared with steel-s, the stability of friction coefficient curve of steel-hs was improved without increasing coefficient friction. The wear resistance of steel-hs was remarkably enhanced under dry and lubricated conditions. Originality/value The originality of this paper is as following: to improve the tribological properties and to prolong service life of steel-s, soft/hard hybrid surface of Babbitt filled in dimples of steel substrate was successfully fabricated by laser texturing combined with hot-pressing. This paper showed that the lipophilicity of steel-hs was best among those of steel-s and steel-h. Babbitt alloy as a soft filler on dimples of steel substrate improved anti-wear of steel-s remarkably. It provides a new way to fabricate Babbitt as bushing on steel substrate.
