The paper considers in vitro and in vivo research of the biological activity of cooper-doped hydroxyapatite samples (CuHAp). Samples were obtained by microwave-assisted liquid-phase synthesis. Kinetic of the calcium ions sedimentation on CuHAp samples from SBF solution does not depend from cooper ions quantity. Implantation of CuHAp samples induces local rejection reaction. The reaction severity incises with increase of cooper ions quantit.

A myriad of resources and efforts have been devoted to assessing the possibilities of using locally sourced biomass to produce energy, reduce CO2 emissions, and, in turn, lower dependance on petroleum. Grape pomace (GP) and walnut shells (WS) are organic waste generated in Chile. Within the last decade, the potential benefits and application of biomass have received significant attention, both in terms of producing functionalized carbon materials, and the various potential applications in the field of energy storage and environmental protection. The proposed research motivation is on the development of carbonous materials through thermal decomposition processes. Few researchers have addressed the idea of developing a multipurpose carbonaceous matrix from hydrochar, and there remains a need for an efficient method to obtain hydrochar specially from grape pomace. Hence, the general objective of this research is to study the potential of grape pomace and walnut shells treated with hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as an alternative low-cost and efficient carbonous matrix. Proximate and elemental analysis was determined to distinguish the nature of the feedstock along with the hydrochar produced. Yield and reaction severity were also studied to study the impacts of temperature and residence time for both feedstocks. Successful results from the proposed work have broad applications for increasing the sustainability biomass applications, contributing to a positive economic impact.

Peanut allergy reaction severity correlates with increased intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) barrier permeability. CC027/GeniUnc mice develop peanut allergy by intragastric administration of peanut proteins without adjuvant. We report that peanut-allergic CC027/GeniUnc mice showed increased IEC barrier permeability and systemic peanut allergen Ara h 2 after challenge. Jejunal epithelial cell transcriptomics showed effects of peanut allergy on IEC proliferation, survival, and metabolism, and revealed IEC-predominant angiopoietin like-4 (Angptl4) as a unique feature of CC027/GeniUnc peanut allergy. CC027/GeniUnc mice and peanut-allergic pediatric patients demonstrated significantly higher serum Angptl4 and ANGPTL4 compared to control C3H/HeJ mice and non-peanut-allergic but atopic patients, respectively, highlighting its potential as a biomarker of peanut allergy.

AbstractMost Canadian food allergy data has focused on Health Canada’s priority food allergens. This study describes which non-priority (emerging) food allergens were most commonly reported by Canadian parents and categorized/confirmed by allergists. A secondary aim was to describe severity of allergic reactions to emerging allergens. Parents reported allergic reactions to emerging food allergens experienced by their child (< 18 years) which occurred in the past 12 months, and allergists categorized/confirmed them according to likelihood of IgE-mediated food allergy. Of 68 eligible patients completing the survey, the most commonly reported emerging allergens were fruits/vegetables (58.8%), seeds (22.1%), legumes (19.1%) and other (11.8%). Median allergist ranking for legumes was ‘probable’ IgE-mediated food allergy, ‘possible’ for seeds and fruits/vegetables, and ‘unlikely’ for other. Median reaction severity was mild for legumes, and moderate for seeds, fruits/vegetables, and other. Our study highlights that non-priority food allergens, namely legumes and seeds, can lead to probable/likely allergic reactions in Canadian children. These food allergens are increasing in popularity in the Canadian diet, which could lead to increasing reports of allergic reactions. More research is needed to confirm reports of reactions to emerging allergens, and to document their inclusion as ingredients in packaged foods.

DRESS/DiHS is a complex and potentially fatal drug reaction. Little is known about risk factors and elements that can help to identify patients with a severe reaction early. The aim of the study was to investigate those factors favoring the disease and its severity by analyzing the clinical conditions and therapies preceding the reaction. We conducted a retrospective analysis on patients admitted to our center between 2010 and 2020 who were discharged with a diagnosis of DRESS. We used the RegiSCAR diagnostic criteria. We defined the severity of DRESS using the criteria of Mizukawa et al. We included 25 patients (15 females) with a median age of 66 years. Skin involvement, eosinophilia, and liver injury were the most important aspects. Allopurinol was found to be the most involved drug. Reaction severity was significantly associated with the number of daily medications (p=0.0067) and an age of at least 68 years (p=0.013). In addition, 75% of severe cases had at least three comorbidities in history, and most of the severe cases were female. In our study the advanced age, the high number of comorbidities and home therapies, and the inflammatory state were found to be predisposing elements to the development of the disease and its severity.

Tropomyosins are a family of allergenic proteins found in large quantities in all invertebrates. Tropomyosins sensitization causes a life-threatening allergic reaction up to anaphylaxis after eating seafood. Identifying the source of primary sensitization is important to predict the allergic reaction severity. This article describes a clinical case of chronic recurrent urticaria in an 8-year-old boy with tropomyosins sensitization. An 8-year-old boy was diagnosed with the following: controlled atopic phenotype bronchial asthma, food allergy (oral allergy syndrome), and chronic recurrent spontaneous urticaria. Component diagnostics revealed IgE-aB to tropomyosins in high concentrations from 38.79 to 43.38 kUA/l and cat and dog uteroglobin and lipocalins in high concentrations from 7.79 to 43.38 kUA/l. It is necessary to specify the primary sensitizer to analyze the clinical significance of allergens that provoke sensitization to various groups of allergens. In this case, sensitization to tropomyosins is most likely described as caused by either a helminthic invasion or midge bites. Therefore, food allergic reactions to tropomyosins caused from crustaceans were not observed.

IntroductionThere remain significant knowledge gaps about the management and outcomes of children with anaphylaxis. These gaps have led to practice variation regarding decisions to hospitalise children and length of observation periods following treatment with epinephrine. The objectives of this multicentre study are to (1) determine the prevalence of and risk factors for severe, persistent, refractory and biphasic anaphylaxis, as well as persistent and biphasic non-anaphylactic reactions; (2) derive and validate prediction models for emergency department (ED) discharge; and (3) determine data-driven lengths of ED and inpatient observation prior to discharge to home based on initial reaction severity.Methods and analysisThe study is being conducted through the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee (PEMCRC). Children 6 months to less than 18 years of age presenting to 30 participating EDs for anaphylaxis from October 2015 to December 2019 will be eligible. The primary outcomes for each objective are (1) severe, persistent, refractory or biphasic anaphylaxis, as well as persistent or biphasic non-anaphylactic reactions; (2) safe ED discharge, defined as no receipt of acute anaphylaxis medications or hypotension beyond 4 hours from first administered dose of epinephrine; and (3) time from first to last administered dose of epinephrine and vasopressor cessation. Analyses for each objective include (1) descriptive statistics to estimate prevalence and generalised estimating equations that will be used to investigate risk factors for anaphylaxis outcomes, (2) least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and binary recursive partitioning to derive and validate prediction models of children who may be candidates for safe ED discharge, and (3) Kaplan-Meier analyses to assess timing from first to last epinephrine doses and vasopressor cessation based on initial reaction severity.Ethics and disseminationAll sites will obtain institutional review board approval; results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated via traditional and social media, blogs and online education platforms.
