The limited allocation of time, which is only 2 hours per week, the curricula that often change, the stereotypes about the History of Islamic Civilization (Sejarah Kebudayaan Islam or SKI) as a merely complementary and a boring subject, are among significant obstacles for SKI teachers to deliver the learning of the subject with demands for changes in the students’ cognitive, affective, and psycho-motoric aspects,. This paper aims at studying the strategies employed by the SKI teacher at the Islamic Junior High School (Madrasah Tsanawiyah or MTs) “Bahrul Ulum” Gadingmangu – Perak – Jombang in learning the subject to the students. The study is qualitative field research and the data was analyzed using the descriptive method. The findings show that the teacher’s good preparation and mastery of the subject, the Small Group Work (SGW) technique, and self-habituation activities have helped much in overcoming obstacles in the SKI learning as well as helping students to obtain good achievement both academically and non-academically.

This paper studies the relationship between religious liberty and economic freedom. First, three new facts emerge: (a) religious liberty has increased since 1960, but has slipped substantially over the past decade; (b) the countries that experienced the largest declines in religious liberty tend to have greater economic freedom, especially property rights; (c) changes in religious liberty are associated with changes in the allocation of time to religious activities. Second, using a combination of vector autoregressions and dynamic panel methods, improvements in religious liberty tend to precede economic freedom. Finally, increases in religious liberty have a wide array of spillovers that are important determinants of economic freedom and explain the direction of causality. Countries cannot have long-run economic prosperity and freedom without actively allowing for and promoting religious liberty.

AbstractIn this study, we investigate the effect of time allocation on children’s non-cognitive development, using data from the Millennium Cohort Study (UK) and focusing on children aged 7 and 11 years. We classify the time spent outside of school into seven groups of activities and evaluate their impact on five socio-emotional skills drawn from the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire, leveraging the data’s panel structure. We subsequently test the robustness of our estimates against endogeneity issues. Time spent on sports, studying, reading, tidying up and active time with parents have beneficial effects, while video-screen time and extra hours at school have harmful effects.

Abstract Machine learning tools and techniques were utilised to create a Novel Change Detection Algorithm (NCDA) as a supplementary quality assurance tool to alert users to potential significant changes in linear accelerator output using daily measurements. A prototype model was developed and validated that provides a forecast for the daily dose and indicated when there is the potential for the output to change beyond what is considered normal daily drift. The model provided a good fit with the validation dataset used, meaning that trends in daily output were easy to identify. The NCDA can be used either daily whereby output data is manually entered from the QA3 user interface, or on a weekly basis allowing input of the other data which is not traditionally presented on the interface. The NCDA should serve as a tool to alert users when data is trending out of tolerance and inform of possible output adjustments, therefore enabling effective allocation of time and resources.

Abstract This paper contributes to the migration literature studying the time devoted to educational activities. It uses US time-diary surveys to study the allocation of time to informal as well as formal learning and educational activities by immigrants and natives. We develop a simple theoretical framework, which highlights the different constraints/opportunity costs faced by immigrants as compared with natives. Consistently with our theoretical model, the estimates show that immigrants are more likely to engage in informal and formal education and conditional on participation, they allocate more time to these activities. We find that the main drivers are economic incentives, mostly in the early phase of working life, and that the differences between natives and immigrants persist across generations. We also find that differences between immigrants and natives are generally larger in informal education than in formal education. The investment in informal and formal learning and educational activities is likely to boost immigrants' human and social capital and contribute to their socio-economic integration.

Daily activities are all activities carried out by animals daily starting from the morning out of the nest until late in the evening and back again to the nest. This study aims to determine the activity pattern of sambar deer (Rusa unicolor). This observation was carried out at the Ragunan zoo which was carried out in 3 stages, namely morning, afternoon and evening. This study observed the patterns of time use and space use observed in sambar deer with 5 age class categories, namely adult males, adult females, young males and young females. The results of the research obtained from the activity of the sambar deer in the morning, namely the allocation of time for daily activities in the morning for each different age class, the allocation of time for feeding, moving, and resting activities during the daytime period for each individual age class of the deer is different and the time allocation for daily activities in the afternoon for each age class is different. Most of the sambar deer in Ragunan prefer to be in the grass below the stands for their activities. Time allocation (time budget) for sambar deer in age class and sex is influenced by the time of activity (morning-afternoon-evening).

The economic shutdown and national lockdown following the outbreak of COVID-19 have increased demand for unpaid work at home, particularly among families with children, and reduced demand for paid work. Concurrently, the share of the workforce that has relocated its workplace to home has also increased. In this article, we examine the consequences of these processes for the allocation of time among paid work, housework, and care work for men and women in Israel. Using data on 2,027 Israeli adults whom we followed since the first week of March (before the spread of COVID-19), we focus on the effect of the second lockdown in Israel (in September) on the gender division of both paid and unpaid work. We find that as demand for housework caused by the lockdown increases, women—especially with children—increase their housework much more than men do, particularly when they work from home. The consequences of work from home and other flexible work arrangements for gender inequality within the family are discussed.

The use of CT scans in palaeontology has a long history. Most X-ray CT scans of fossils are carried out on previously prepared specimens and seldom on unprepared blocks of fossils. Here we report the use of a standard medical X-ray CT scanner to detect vertebrate and invertebrate fossils inside limestone blocks as an aid to subsequent preparation. The results were largely successful, with low-resolution images and radiodensity thresholds which nevertheless created sufficient contrast for identification of objects and their location inside blocks of limestone, thus optimizing the allocation of time and resources for palaeontological preparation. We conclude that the use of medical X-ray CT scanners for an initial visual inspection of limestone blocks for the presence of below the surface fossils is possible, cost effective and reliable. In addition, it allows the original raw data to be preserved as a digital object. The advantages of making use of standard medical X-ray CT scanners to facilitate palaeontological preparation under logistic or budgetary limitations is becoming more and more apparent.
