We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the quantum cellular automaton Rule 54 using a time-channel approach. We exhibit a family of (non-equilibrium) product states for which we are able to describe exactly the full relaxation dynamics. We use this to prove that finite subsystems relax to a one-parameter family of Gibbs states. We also consider inhomogeneous quenches. Specifically, we show that when the two halves of the system are prepared in two different solvable states, finite subsystems at finite distance from the centre eventually relax to the non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) predicted by generalised hydrodynamics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first exact description of the relaxation to a NESS in an interacting system and, therefore, the first independent confirmation of generalised hydrodynamics for an inhomogeneous quench.

Aims: This study presents a survival stratification model based on multi-omics integration using bidirectional deep neural networks (BiDNNs) in gastric cancer. Methods: Based on the survival-related representation features yielded by BiDNNs through integrating transcriptomics and epigenomics data, K-means clustering analysis was performed to cluster tumor samples into different survival subgroups. The BiDNNs-based model was validated using tenfold cross-validation and in two independent confirmation cohorts. Results: Using the BiDNNs-based survival stratification model, patients were grouped into two survival subgroups with log-rank p-value = 9.05E-05. The subgroups classification was robustly validated in tenfold cross-validation (C-index = 0.65 ± 0.02) and in two confirmation cohorts (E-GEOD-26253, C-index = 0.609; E-GEOD-62254, C-index = 0.706). Conclusion: We propose and validate a robust and stable BiDNN-based survival stratification model in gastric cancer.

AbstractBehavioural anxiety tests in non-human animals are used for anxiolytic drug discovery, and to investigate the neurobiology of threat avoidance. Over the past decade, several of them were translated to humans with three clinically relevant goals: to assess potential efficacy of candidate treatments in healthy humans; to develop diagnostic tests or biomarkers; and to elucidate the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders. In this review, we scrutinise these promises and compare seven anxiety tests that are validated across species: five approach-avoidance conflict tests, unpredictable shock anticipation, and the social intrusion test in children. Regarding the first goal, three tests appear suitable for anxiolytic drug screening in humans. However, they have not become part of the drug development pipeline and achieving this may require independent confirmation of predictive validity and cost-effectiveness. Secondly, two tests have shown potential to measure clinically relevant individual differences, but their psychometric properties, predictive value, and clinical applicability need to be clarified. Finally, cross-species research has not yet revealed new evidence that the physiology of healthy human behaviour in anxiety tests relates to the physiology of anxiety symptoms in patients. To summarise, cross-species anxiety tests could be rendered useful for drug screening and for development of diagnostic instruments. Using these tests for aetiology research in healthy humans or animals needs to be queried and may turn out to be unrealistic.

Abstract Partial rbcL sequences were obtained from the type specimens of Lithophyllum coarctatum and L. gardineri. Both species were variably assigned to either Hydrolithon or Porolithon during the last two centuries, with L. coarctatum, from the tropical eastern Indian Ocean currently considered a synonym of L. gardineri from the tropical western Indian Ocean. Phylogenetic analyses show that both belong in Porolithon and that they are distinct species despite their morpho-anatomical similarities, including a columnar morphology. Porolithon epiphyticum sp. nov., from the same locality as P. coarctatum, Cocos-Keeling Islands, is the first reported epiphytic species in the genus. Eight of the currently recognized 15 species of Porolithon have had their type specimens sequenced to correctly apply names, including the generitype specimen. DNA sequencing provides independent confirmation that the morpho-anatomical character of the presence of horizontal fields of trichocytes without intervening vegetative cells is diagnostic for Porolithon. The generitypes of the four genera classified in the subfamily Metagoniolithoideae, Dawsoniolithon, Floiophycus, Harveylithon, and Metagoniolithon as well as Hydrolithon in the subfamily Hydrolithoideae, have not been sequenced. The taxonomic and nomenclatural uncertainties in each of these genera are discussed.

Uterine leiomyomas are tumors, which are hormone driven and originate from the smooth muscle layer of the uterine wall. In addition to known genes in leiomyoma pathogenesis, recent approaches also highlight epigenetic malfunctions as an important mechanism of gene dysregulation. RNA sequencing raw data from pair-matched normal myometrium and fibroid tumors from two independent studies were used as discovery and validation sets and reanalyzed. RNA extracted from normal myometrium and fibroid tumors from 58 Slovenian patients was used as independent confirmation of most significant differentially expressed genes. Subsequently, GWA data from leiomyoma patients were used in order to identify genetic variants at epigenetic marks. Gene Ontology analysis of the overlap of two independent RNA-seq analyses showed that NPTX1, NPTX2, CHRM2, DRD2 and CACNA1A were listed as significant for several enriched GO terms. All five genes were subsequently confirmed in the independent Slovenian cohort. Additional integration and functional analysis showed that genetic variants in these five gene regions are listed at a chromatin structure and state, predicting promoters, enhancers, DNase hypersensitivity and altered transcription factor binding sites. We identified a unique subgroup of dysregulated synaptic signaling genes involved in the biology and pathogenesis of leiomyomas, adding to the complexity of tumor biology.

ABSTRACT A dinosaur-bearing bonebed (Rose Quarry) from the uppermost Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Lance Formation has yielded abundant, yet fragmentary, disarticulated, and disassociated bones and teeth of dinosaurs, turtles, crocodilians, and fish contained within a channelized sandstone unit along with large mud clasts. The vertebrate fossils of Rose Quarry possess varying abrasion states, tooth traces, and trampling marks, suggesting a complicated taphonomic history. To independently test hypotheses about the genesis of the assemblage, Rose Quarry bone samples were sent to members of our team who conducted “blind” analyses of their trace element signatures without knowledge of the physical taphonomic attributes of each specimen. The independent analyses of the chemical and physical taphonomic signatures both support a mixed, attritional bone concentration. Based on our cumulative data, we present a depositional model for the Rose Quarry bonebed in which a flooding event mixed bones already present in the channel or from an older bonebed with bones from the floodplain that had been scavenged, trampled, and broken. Our study demonstrates that striking variability is possible among fluvial bonebeds, and that such variability is influenced by pre-burial and post-burial factors, as well as depositional subenvironments and burial mechanisms. Additionally, we demonstrate that physical and chemical taphonomic analyses can independently confirm the taphonomic history of a bonebed.

This article begins with a new look at earlier work on this topic and continues with the presentation of a graphical technique for the determination of the months of a year for which the 13th is a Friday.It might be thought that the likelihood of the 13 th day of a month being a Friday is the same as that of the 13th being any other day, but this is not so. The full day/date repeat cycle is 400 years, this being the interval between century years which are leap years. The outcome of an extraordinary counting exercise some 50 years ago by a 13-year-old Eton schoolboy, S. R. Baxter [1, 2], was to show that, over this period, the 13th of a month will be a Friday at least once more than any other day. Of necessity, Baxter’s calculation was intricate and an independent confirmation was undertaken as a matter of interest. The 400-year period beginning 1 March 2014 was considered. The work is described in four stages.

Abstract We previously reported a putative detection of a radio galaxy at $z=10.15$ , selected from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. The redshift of this source, GLEAM J0917–0012, was based on three weakly detected molecular emission lines observed with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA). In order to confirm this result, we conducted deep spectroscopic follow-up observations with ALMA and the Karl Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). The ALMA observations targeted the same CO lines previously reported in Band 3 (84–115 GHz) and the VLA targeted the CO(4-3) and [CI(1-0)] lines for an independent confirmation in Q-band (41 and 44 GHz). Neither observation detected any emission lines, removing support for our original interpretation. Adding publicly available optical data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam survey, Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), and Herschel Space Observatory in the infrared, as well as $<$ 10 GHz polarisation and 162 MHz inter-planetary scintillation observations, we model the physical and observational characteristics of GLEAM J0917–0012 as a function of redshift. Comparing these predictions and observational relations to the data, we are able to constrain its nature and distance. We argue that if GLEAM J0917–0012 is at $z<3,$ then it has an extremely unusual nature, and that the more likely solution is that the source lies above $z=7$ .

AbstractRecently, the ATOMKI experiment has reported new evidence for the excess of $$e^+e^-$$ e + e - events with a mass $$\sim $$ ∼ 17 MeV in the nuclear transitions of $$^4$$ 4 He, that they previously observed in measurements with $$^8$$ 8 Be. These observations could be explained by the existence of a new vector $$X17$$ X 17 boson. So far, the search for the decay $$X17 \rightarrow e^+ e^-$$ X 17 → e + e - with the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS gave negative results. Here, we present a new technique that could be implemented in NA64 aiming to improve the sensitivity and to cover the remaining $$X17$$ X 17 parameter space. If a signal-like event is detected, an unambiguous observation is achieved by reconstructing the invariant mass of the $$X17$$ X 17 decay with the proposed method. To reach this goal an optimization of the $$X17$$ X 17 production target, as well as an efficient and accurate reconstruction of two close decay tracks, is required. A dedicated analysis of the available experimental data making use of the trackers information is presented. This method provides independent confirmation of the NA64 published results [1], validating the tracking procedure. The detailed Monte Carlo study of the proposed setup and the background estimate show that the goal of the proposed search is feasible.
