Abstract Partial rbcL sequences were obtained from the type specimens of Lithophyllum coarctatum and L. gardineri. Both species were variably assigned to either Hydrolithon or Porolithon during the last two centuries, with L. coarctatum, from the tropical eastern Indian Ocean currently considered a synonym of L. gardineri from the tropical western Indian Ocean. Phylogenetic analyses show that both belong in Porolithon and that they are distinct species despite their morpho-anatomical similarities, including a columnar morphology. Porolithon epiphyticum sp. nov., from the same locality as P. coarctatum, Cocos-Keeling Islands, is the first reported epiphytic species in the genus. Eight of the currently recognized 15 species of Porolithon have had their type specimens sequenced to correctly apply names, including the generitype specimen. DNA sequencing provides independent confirmation that the morpho-anatomical character of the presence of horizontal fields of trichocytes without intervening vegetative cells is diagnostic for Porolithon. The generitypes of the four genera classified in the subfamily Metagoniolithoideae, Dawsoniolithon, Floiophycus, Harveylithon, and Metagoniolithon as well as Hydrolithon in the subfamily Hydrolithoideae, have not been sequenced. The taxonomic and nomenclatural uncertainties in each of these genera are discussed.

A taxonomic revision of the genus Podagrostis (Griseb.) Scribn. & Merr. is presented, including two new combinations: P. meridensis (Luces) A. M. Molina & Rúgolo and P. novogaliciana (McVaugh) A. M. Molina & Rúgolo. Podagrostis bacillata (Hack.) Sylvester & Soreng constitutes a new report for Colombia. Information regarding synonymy, geographical distribution, habitat, iconography, and vernacular names is provided along with complete illustrations and a list of additional specimens examined. A key for the identification of the species is included as well as a comparative table based on macro- and micromorphological data. The anatomical character of Trichodium net on lemma epidermis, as well as its diagnostic value, is discussed in species of Podagrostis and most related genera (e.g., Agrostis L., Chaetotropis Kunth, and Polypogon Desf., among others).

Abstract Carpological anatomical characters are important in the taxonomy of Apiaceae. At present, it is necessary to include them in any critical revision of taxa of every rank, to characterize species and genera and to identify groups of related taxa. To create standardized descriptions of these taxa, we have compiled a list of taxonomically important fruit anatomical characters. This list includes 15 characters and 79 character states. Fruit anatomical characters are often constant in genera and can characterize genera or groups of closely related genera. However, the same anatomical character can occur in distant taxa. All anatomical characters are illustrated on schematic transverse sections of mericarps or in photographs.

A clinical survey was carried out to assess the etiopathology of preputial prolapse in Gir bulls at 41 Gaushalas of the Saurashtra region in Gujarat. A total of 202 Gir bulls under the breeding program were surveyed. The mean age of Gir bulls was recorded as 5.71 years, which ranged from 2.5 to 12 years. Preputial prolapse was diagnosed in all the surveyed Gir bulls. The first degree preputial prolapse was common in all the bulls because of the breed anatomical character. Out of the 202 breeding bulls, 30 (14.85%) bulls had pathological preputial prolapse, which varied between 2nd and 4th degrees. Among the 30 affected bulls, 12 (40 %) bulls had preputial prolapse of 2nd degree, 6 (20 %) bulls had 3rd degree of preputial prolapse and 12 (40 %) bulls had 4th degree of preputial prolapse. Traumatic injury to prepuce, followed by its contamination, was the main etiology for the preputial prolapse and its aggravations in all the animals. All Gir bulls had common anatomical / structural deformities of the preputial sheath.

The research was purposed  (1) to know the effects of drought stress on changes in leaf anatomical character of oil palm seedlings (2) to know the contribution of calcium in cell compactness and increase the structural strength of leaf tissue so that oil palm seedlings were more tolerant to drought stress. This experiment was laid out following a split plot design with three blocks as replication. Main plot consists of drought stress levels, that are field capacity (FTSW 1.00), moderate drought stress (FTSW 0.35) and severe drought stress (FTSW 0.15). The fraction of transpirable soil water (FTSW) is a method for evaluating gradually increasing drought stress based on the amount of water loss due to transpiration. Meanwhile, subplot consists of four doses of calcium (Ca), that are of 0.0 g/seedlings, 0.04 g/seedlings, 0.08 g/seedlings, and 0.12 g/seedlings. Calcium fertilizer used is calcium sulfate (CaSO4) pure analysis. Leaf anatomical character was observed including the epidermal length and epidermal width; hypodermal length and hypodermal width; palisade cell length and palisade cell width; sponge cell length and sponge cell width; mesophyll tissue thickness; xylem and phloem diameter. The results showed that moderate and severe drought stress reduced epidermal cell length, upper hypodermal cell width, mesophyll thickness, palisade width and phloem diameter of leaf vessels. The applications of calcium to the leaf of oil palm seedlings under drought stresses were able to increased in the sponge cell length at a Ca dosage of 0.04 g/seedlings; increased lower hypodermal width and diameter phloem at a Ca dosage of 0.04 g/seedlings; and increased diameter xylem of leaves vessel at a Ca dosage of 0.12 g/seedlings.
