Using Communicative Approach in Teaching Speaking Competence of Young Learners through Home-based Learning

This study aims to probe into the use of communicative approach in teaching speaking competence of young learners through a Home-based Learning approach. To master a language, the learner should sharpen their speaking skills/competences. In Indonesia, English is taught as a foreign/second language to young learners. Developing speaking competence will teach young learners English beyond grammar and word function, so that they could freely express their opinions. Being able to express themselves, young learners will have good self-esteem which would, in turn, help them in learning new things and other languages. However, the COVID-19 pandemic urged teachers to alter their method of teaching speaking to young learners as they learn from home and meet their teachers online through a virtual meeting platform. This study found that the materials designed by the teacher do impact in stimulating young language learners to improve their communication skills in English. Trudna przestrzeń. O filmie Roberta Stando Strach ma wielkie oczy

The article analyses and interprets Robert Stando’s little-known educational film Strach ma wielkie oczy [Fear has large eyes]. The film was made in 1965 and produced by the Documentary Film Studio in Warsaw. The author explores the original character of the film, reconstructing the stylistic and compositional techniques used by filmmakers, among others, in the field of cinematography (underwater photography), editing, word function, music, sound effects etc.

TATA RIAS PENGANTIN AGUNG JEMBRANA

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan tata rias pengantin Agung Jembrana, fungsi dan makna tata rias pengantin Agung Jembrana. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Lokasi penelitian di LKP W & W Asri. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode observasi dan wawancara. Instrument penelitian berupa lembar observasi dan pedoman wawancara. Hasil penelitian tata rias pengantin agung Jembrana yang berbeda pada umumnya terdiri dari (a) tata rias wajah meliputi: serinata dan alis-alis (b) tatanan rambut pengantin wanita meliputi: bunga menori putih, bunga menori kuncup putih dan sanggul gelung tanduk. Pada pengantin pria meliputi: udeng. (c) busana pengantin wanita meliputi: tapih wali, kamen songket, selendang bersulam benang emas, selendang cerari dan baju bludru hitam. Pengantin pria meliputi: kamen mastuli penuh, saput songket, umpal cerari dan baju bludru hitam. (d) aksesoris pengantin wanita meliputi: subeng, sabuk pending, gelang nagasatru dan kalung binar. Pengantin pria meliputi: rumbing, gelang nagasatru dan gelang kaki, keris dan pucuk emas. This study employed descriptive qualitative research. The research location of this study was at LKP W & W Asri. This study used observation and interview method for collecting the data. The research instruments were observation sheet and interview guidelines. The results indicated that, the bridal makeup of Agung Jembrana consisted of (a) makeup, included: serinata, eyebrows. (b) the bride’s hairdo, included: white menori flower, bud-white menori flower, and sanggul gelung tanduk. Meanwhile, the groom, included: udeng. (c) bridal gowns, included: tapih wali, kamen songket, scarves embroidered by gold thread, cerari scraves, black velvet shirt. The groom, included: full of kamen mastuli, saput songket, umpal cerari, and black velvet shirt. (d) bridal accessories, included: subeng, pending belt, naga satru bracelets, and binar necklace. The Paradox of Theory and Practice: The Case of Auxiliaries in Arabic

Reviewing most traditional linguistics and grammar books about Arabic shows clear controversy over auxiliaries. There are indications of the use of verbs and particles which fulfill the function of auxiliaries, but they are not recognized as being such. They are classified under different word classes other than auxiliaries. Hence, there have been many recent attempts to validate the argument of the availability of auxiliaries in Arabic by researchers who signify their uses in rich corpora. Yet, many curriculum development committees prescribe textbooks which show no interest in investing the rational results of these attempts. These textbooks do not give word function the required consideration when discussing rules and generalizations. Modern linguists and textbooks designers should find a new perspective of word classification to facilitate the study and the practice in certain fields like translation, contrastive linguistics and error analysis. The nonalignment of linguistic theory and what is actually done in practice is one of the major causes of the errors in composition and translation between Arabic and English. The problem becomes more complicated when instructors have incomplete information or false beliefs via which they deepen the gap between theory and practice rather than bridging it. There is a need to assist learners and translation trainees with reliable training to master linguistic analysis and to select the best equivalents accurately and promptly which they need for successful career.

The meanings of 'function' in biology and the problematic case of de novo gene emergence

The word function has many different meanings in molecular biology. Here we explore the use of this word (and derivatives like functional) in research papers about de novo gene birth. Based on an analysis of 20 abstracts we propose a simple lexicon that, we believe, will help scientists and philosophers discuss the meaning of function more clearly.

ANALISIS KATA MAKIAN DALAM DRAMA KOMEDI SASAK OMJ (OOO MENU JARIN) SUATU KAJIAN SOSIOLINGUISTIK

Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini, yaitu 1) untuk mengetahui bentuk kata makian 2) untuk mengetahui fungsi kata makian 3) untuk mengetahui makna referensi kata makian. Metode penelitian ini, dengan teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif diantaranya teknik simak dan catat, yaitu penelitian menonton film komedi Sasak OMJ ( Ooo Menu Jarin). Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan 1) bentuk kata makian yang terdapat pada film drama komedi Sasak OMJ (Ooo Menu Jarin) sebanyak 12 kata makian dan terdiri atas dua bentuk bahasa yaitu bentuk kata dasar dan bentuk frase. 2) fungsi kata makian yang terdapat pada film tersebut menurut pandangan Andersson dan Trudgiil ada empat fungsi yaitu a) fungsi “explerive” yang berarti penggunaan makian untuk menyatakan emosi dan tidak ditunjukkan langsung pada orang lain b) fungsi”abusive” yang berarti penggunaan makian yang langsung ditunjukkan pada orang lain c) fungsi “humorous” yang berarti penggunaan makian yang merujuk langsung pada orang lain, tetapi bukan dalam maksud menghina dan yang d) fungsi”auxiliary” yangberarti menggunakan makian yang tidak langsung merujuk pada orang lain, melainkan sekedar cara bicara (lezy speaking), yang sering kali tidak sungguh-sungguh. 3) Makna referensial kata makian yaitu, keadaan, binatang, benda-benda, bagian tubuh dan profesi. Abstract: The purpose of this study, namely 1) to know the form of the word 2) to know the function of the word cuss 3) to know the meaning of the word reference. This method of research, with the technique of data collection using qualitative descriptive method including the reading and note-taking technique, which is the research to watch the comedy movies Sasak OMJ (Ooo Menu Jarin). The results of the study showed 1) the word form found in the comedy-drama Sasak OMJ (Ooo Menu Jarin) as many as 12 words and consists of two forms of basic word and phrase form. 2) The word function that exists in the film according to the views of Andersson and Trudgiil there are four functions of a) function "explerive" which means the use of cuss to declare emotions and not shown directly in others b) function "abusive" Which means the use of the stock is directly shown in others c) function "humorous" which means the use of the laboratory referring directly to others, but not in the intent of insults and the D) function "auxiliary" means using the Cuss That does not directly refer to other people, but rather just a lezy speaking, which is often not earnest. 3) referential meaning of the word cuss i.e., circumstances, animals, objects, body parts and professions.

Smart I’rab: Smart Aplicasion for Arabic Grammar Learning

Arabic grammar, known as nahwu, is necessary to comprehend the Holy Qur’an that is completely written in Arabic. However, many people get trouble to study this skill because there are various kinds of word formation and sentences that may be created from a single verb, noun, adjective, subject, predicate, object, adverb or another formation. This research proposes a new approach to identify the position and word function in Arabic sentence. The approach creates smart process that employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) and expert system with modeling based on knowledge and inference engine in determining the word position. The knowledge base determines the part of speech while the inference engine shows the word function in the sentence. On processing, the system uses 82 templates consisting of 34 verb templates, 34 subject pronouns, 14 pronouns for object or possessive word. All the templates are in the form of char array for harakat (vowel) and letters which become the comparators for determining the part of speech from input word sentence. Output from the system is an i’rab (the explanation of word function in sentence) written in Arabic. The system has been tested for 159 times to examine word and sentence. The examination for word that is done 117 times has not made any error except for the word that is really like another word. While the detection for word function in sentence that is done 42 times experiment, there is no error too. An error happens when the part of speech from the word being examined is not included in the system yet, influencing the following word function detection.Keywords: I’rab, Arabic grammar, NLP, expert system, knowledge base, inference engine

THE COMPLEXITY OF WORD CIRCUITS

A word circuit [1] is a directed acyclic graph in which each edge holds a w-bit word (i.e., some x ∈ {0, 1}w) and each node is a gate computing some binary function g : {0, 1}w × {0, 1}w → {0, 1}w. The following problem was studied in [1]: How many binary gates are needed to compute a ternary function f : ({0, 1}w)3 → {0, 1}w. They proved that (2 + o(1))2w binary gates are enough for any ternary function, and there exists a ternary function which requires word circuits of size (1 - o(1))2w. One of the open problems in [1] is to get these bounds tight within a low order term. In this paper we solved this problem by constructing new word circuits for ternary functions of size (1 + o(1))2w. We investigate the problem in a general setting: How many k-input word gates are needed for computing an n-input word function f : ({0, 1}w)n → {0, 1}w (here n ≥ k). We show that for any fixed n, (1 - o(1))2(n - k)w basic gates are necessary and (1 + o(1))2(n - k)w gates are sufficient (assume w is sufficiently large). Since word circuit is a natural generalization of boolean circuit, we also consider the case when w is a constant and the number of inputs n is sufficiently large.
