The cycad genus Dioon comprises 17 species from Mexico and Honduras, all of them delimited based on their morphological variation and geographic distribution. A recent evaluation of the biological variation among Dioon populations from Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico, demonstrated that the concept of the species Dioon merolae actually consists of three lineages that should be recognized as different taxa. One lineage was already described as Dioon oaxacensis, leaving the concept of Dioon merolae comprising two lineages distributed on both sides of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. However, there are conspicuous morphological differences between these two lineages. Here, we tested whether such a differentiation within the concept of Dioon merolae merits the differentiation of two different taxa. We evaluated the qualitative and morphometric variation among populations belonging to the Dioon merolae lineages, and compared it with the closely related species Dioon oaxacensis. Morphological observations and statistical tests demonstrated that the populations of southeastern Oaxaca, traditionally considered as part of Dioon merolae, represent a distinct species that we described as Dioon salas-moralesae. Identifying the diagnostic characters of this new species helps enable an understanding of the criteria that should be considered to delineate the boundaries between other cycad species.

Abstract Background The tackle is the in-game activity carrying the greatest risk for concussion in rugby. A recent evaluation of tackle characteristics in rugby union precipitated a rule modification to reduce head impact risk during tackles. This study aims to replicate the work conducted in rugby union by examining the association between tackle characteristics and head injury events in professional rugby league. Methods There were 446 tackles resulting in a head injury assessment (HIA) and 5,694 tackles that did not result in a head injury from two National Rugby League (NRL) seasons that were reviewed and coded. Tackle height, body position of players, and contact area on an opponent’s body were evaluated, with the propensity of each situation to cause an HIA calculated as HIAs per 1000 events. Results The propensity for tacklers to sustain a head injury was 0.99 HIAs per 1000 tackles, 1.74-fold greater than for the ball carrier (0.57 HIAs per 1000 tackles). There was a 3.2-fold higher risk for an HIA when the tackler was upright compared to bent-at-the-waist. The greatest risk of a tackler HIA occurred when head contact was very low (knee, boot) or high (head and elbow). HIAs were most common following head-to-head impacts. The lowest propensity for tackler HIA was found when the tackler’s head was in proximity with the ball carrier’s torso. Conclusions The result of this study replicated the findings in professional rugby union. This has implications for the injury prevention initiatives implemented to reduce HIA risk because the majority of injuries are sustained by the tackler.

New systems are often based on optimistic assumptions of how they will improve human performance. In the cognitive engineering tradition, these assumed benefits are regarded as hypotheses that need to be tested. An important element of a system user evaluation is to determine whether the hypothesized benefits are realized. Evaluation may also uncover unsupported aspects of performance or unanticipated side-effects of introducing the new technology that need to be addressed. We present a work-centered approach to user evaluation intended to meet these objectives, focusing specifically on design of tailored user-feedback questionnaires ( work-centered questionnaires) that are intended to be diagnostic of how specific system elements do, or do not, support work. We summarize two recent evaluation studies we have conducted that illustrate our approach and the diagnostic power of work-centered questionnaires. We discuss how the goals and approach of a work-centered evaluation differ from more traditional approaches to usability evaluation that emphasize the use of standardized questionnaires and broad assessments of usability.

This method note presents Q methodology as a useful tool for evaluators to add to their practice toolbox. Q methodology, which involves both quantitative and qualitative techniques, can help researchers and evaluators systematically understand subjectivity and the communicability of opinions and perspectives. We first provide an overview of Q methodology, followed by a brief summary of how evaluators are using Q, and an explanation of the steps for implementing Q methodology. Either by itself or with other methods, the potential uses of Q methodology in evaluation are diverse. For practical demonstration, we describe how Q methodology was used in a recent evaluation in the UK to understand stakeholder subjectivity within the program. We then reflect upon the pros and cons of using Q in program evaluation, concluding that it constitutes a worthwhile tool for evaluating complex programs.

In this Practice Note, two international students (one from Latin America and the other from West Africa), reflect on their first evaluation experience gained through an evaluation practicum course. The paper includes a reflection on four main cultural challenges faced by these international students related to immersion in the culture and program context, interpersonal and communication skills, learning the language of evaluation and telling the story. The course professor, responsible for selecting projects and providing guidance to students throughout the semester, provides further reflections about the students’ perspectives and the challenges of teaching evaluation to international students.

This chapter presents an assessment of the IMF’s role in countries in fragile and conflict-affected situations, drawing primarily on the findings of a recent evaluation report by the Independent Evaluation Office. The IMF is widely acknowledged to have made significant contributions to helping build core economic policy institutions, achieve macroeconomic stability, and promote macro-critical reforms in these countries. Quantitative analyses based on a “dynamic” list of fragile states suggest that the IMF’s program engagement has been positively associated with increased tax revenue, higher GDP growth, and greater official aid inflows. Even so, the IMF’s business model, focused on short-term macroeconomic stabilization, has a tendency to treat fragile states like any other country and does not always fit well with their long-term sustained development needs. The chapter argues that the IMF’s support for fragile states has yet to achieve its full potential and identifies areas where effectiveness can be strengthened.

Recent years have seen an increase in the number of publicly available datasets that are released to foster research in question answering systems. In this work, we survey the available datasets and also provide a simple, multi-faceted classification of those datasets. We further survey the most recent evaluation results that form the current state of the art in question answering research by exploring related research challenges and associated online leaderboards. Finally, we provide a discussion around the existing online challenges and provide a wishlist of datasets whose release could benefit question answering research in the future.
