Abstract We systematically study the perturbative anomaly inflow by the bulk Chern-Simons (CS) theory in a slice of five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS5). The introduction of UV and IR 3-branes makes the anomaly story remarkably rich and many interesting aspects can be obtained, including weakly gauging and spontaneous symmetry breaking of the global symmetries of the dual 4D CFT. Our main contribution is to provide a unified and comprehensive discussion of the subject, together with a detailed description of the dual CFT picture for each case. To this end, we employ a gauge-fixed effective action suitable for a holographic study, which allows us to incorporate general UV and IR boundary conditions (BCs). As part of the process, we reproduce many known results in the literature, such as ’t Hooft anomaly matching for unbroken symmetry (Neumann IR-BC) and (gauged) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) action for broken symmetry (IR-BC breaks the bulk group G → H). In addition, we show that anomaly matching occurs for ABJ anomalies as well as ’t Hooft anomalies, which suggests anomalies inflowed from the bulk CS theory are necessarily free of mixed anomalies with the confining gauge force of the 4D dual CFT. In the case of broken symmetry, we prove that the “would-be” Goldstone bosons associated with the weakly gauged symmetry are completely removed by a proper field redefinition, provided the anomaly from the bulk is exactly cancelled by the boundary contribution, hence confirming the standard expectation. Moreover, we present a holographic formulation of Witten’s argument for the quantization condition for the WZW action, and argue in favor of an alternative way to obtain the same condition using a “deformed” theory (different BCs). We work out several examples, including a product group with mixed anomaly, and identify the corresponding dual CFT picture. We consider a fully general case typically arising in the context of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking.

Abstract Recently, a direct signature of chaos in many body system has been realized from the energy density retarded Green’s function using the phenomenon of ‘pole skipping’. Moreover, special locations in the complex frequency and momentum plane are found, known as the pole skipping points such that the retarded Green’s function can not be defined uniquely there. In this paper, we compute the correction/shift to the pole skipping points due to a spatial anisotropy in a holographic system by performing near horizon analysis of EOMs involving different bulk field perturbations, namely the scalar, the axion and the metric field. For vector and scalar modes of metric perturbations we construct the gauge invariant variable in order to obtain the master equation. Two separate cases for every bulk field EOMs is considered with the fluctuation propagating parallel and perpendicular to the direction of anisotropy. We compute the dispersion relation for momentum diffusion along the transverse direction in the shear channel and show that it passes through the first three successive pole skipping points. The pole skipping phenomenon in the sound channel is found to occur in the upper half plane such that the parameters Lyapunov exponent λL and the butterfly velocity vB are explicitly obtained thus establishing the connection with many body chaos.

The anodic dissolution of copper in chloride electrolytes with different pH has been investigated by using polarization measurements and digital holography. In acidic and neutral NaCl solutions, the oxidation processes of copper are almost the same: copper firstly dissolves as cuprous ions, which then produces the CuCl salt layer. The dissolution rate in the acidic solution is a little higher than that in the neutral. However, the mechanism is quite different in the alkaline NaCl solution: copper turns passive easily due to the formation of a relatively stable Cu2O film which results in pitting, and the dissolution rate of copper decreases before pit initiation.

Abstract We use the holographic language to show the existence of the a-theorem for even dimensional CFTs, dual to the AdS space in general quadratic curvature gravity. We find the Wess-Zumino action which is originated from the spontaneous breaking of the conformal symmetry in $$d\le 8$$d≤8, by using a radial cut-off near the AdS boundary. We also study the RG flow and (average) null energy condition in the space of the couplings of theory. In a simple toy model, we find the regions where this holographic RG flow has a monotonic decreasing behavior.
