This research aims to find out whether texts in the English National Examination at Junior High School. Conform with students' readability level or not. This research is research that uses quantitative methods. It aims to investigate the readability of the texts used in the English national examination texts for junior high school students. Subjects are 8 texts used in the English national examination texts. The instrument used to collect data is the Flesch Reading Ease readability formula. The results of the study it was found that the reading text on the National Examination test was not suitable for junior high school students. Based on the readability formula for the eight reading texts, there are 4 texts in the very easy category, in the easy category there is 1 text, in the quite difficult category there is 1 and there are only 2 reading texts that are suitable for students who are included in the standard category and are fairly easy. For those interested in studying readability, besides Flesch reading ease formula. The writer hopes this research can give more information for further research. The author expected to pay attention to producing better texts which suitable with the level of the students’ readability as the good text can help students to get a high score.

Effective multilingual communication of authoritative health information plays an important role in helping to reduce health disparities and inequalities in developed and developing countries. Health information communication from the World Health Organization is governed by key principles including health information relevance, credibility, understandability, actionability, accessibility. Multilingual health information developed under these principles provide valuable benchmarks to assess the quality of health resources developed by local health authorities. In this paper, we developed machine learning classifiers for health professionals with or without Chinese proficiency to assess public-oriented health information in Chinese based on the definition of effective health communication by the WHO. We compared our optimized classifier (SVM_F5) with the state-of-art Chinese readability classifier (Chinese Readability Index Explorer CRIE 3.0), and classifiers adapted from established English readability formula, Gunning Fog Index, Automated Readability Index. Our optimized classifier achieved statistically significant higher area under the receiver operator curve (AUC of ROC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity than those of SVM using CRIE 3.0 features and SVM using linguistic features of Gunning Fog Index and Automated Readability Index (ARI). The statistically improved performance of our optimized classifier compared to that of SVM classifiers adapted from popular readability formula suggests that evaluation of health communication effectiveness as defined by the principles of the WHO is more complex than information readability assessment. Our SVM classifier validated on health information covering diverse topics (environmental health, infectious diseases, pregnancy, maternity care, non-communicable diseases, tobacco control) can aid effectively in the automatic assessment of original, translated Chinese public health information of whether they satisfy or not the current international standard of effective health communication as set by the WHO.

This study investigates text readability level investigation about biology subjects-related units in 'Science 7 Textbook'. A document analysis method was used in this study based on a qualitative research approach. The textbook, which has been used since the 2019-2020 academic year, has been selected as the study material. In the textbook, a total of 15 texts were randomly determined from two units related to biology subjects, one for each of the learning outcomes specified in the 2018 Science Course Curriculum. In calculating the readability levels of the texts, the 'Ateşman Readability Formula' was used. The findings obtained as a result of the analysis showed that the overall readability levels of the texts in both units were in the 'medium difficulty' category. Furthermore, when the findings of each unit were examined on a subject basis, it was determined that the texts belonging to all of the topics included in both units (Cell and Divisions, Reproduction, Growth and Development in Living Beings) were found in the 'medium' category. These findings were interpreted as the science textbook prepared for the seventh grade for the student level in terms of readability.

The aim of this study is to examine the readability levels of the texts on the biology units in the science textbook prepared for the sixth grade. This study, which is based on a qualitative approach, was carried out with the method of document analysis. The textbook examined in the study is Middle School and Imam Hatip Middle School Science Textbook 6, which has been used since the 2018-2019 academic year. Regarding biology topics, the textbook includes in two units (Unit-1: Our Body Systems, Unit 2: Our Body Systems and Health). In the study, the learning outcomes of the units were taken as a basis in the selection of the texts to be analyzed in the textbook. In the study, a total of 22 texts were randomly selected by taking into account the learning outcomes in the curriculum. In addition, it has been paid attention that each text contains at least 100 words. Ateşman readability formula was used to determine the readability levels of the selected texts. According to the findings obtained as a result of the analysis, it was determined that the readability level of the texts for unit-2 was medium, while the readability level of the texts for unit-6 was found to be difficult. In the light of the findings, suggestions were made that the textbooks should be prepared in accordance with the student level in terms of readability and that texts consisting of simpler and shorter sentences should be used more.

This study discusses the general description of the textbook and then the description of the level of readability based on the readability formula and the reader's response. The method used is the descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The general description of the textbook based on the results of studies of the profile and anatomical structure is very good. Even though there is some lack in its anatomical structure, this is very reasonable considering the textbooks are presented as needed. The level of readability based on the Fog Index theory shows that textbooks are classified as very easy, while based on the reader's response through the Cloze Test the textbook is at the instructional level. This the researcher can judge that the book is suitable for use in learning. In practice the teacher's role is still needed in modifying the presentation of the material also requires the guidance of the teacher in the learning process.

AbstractThe readability of scientific texts is critical for the successful distribution of research findings. I replicate a recent study which found that the abstracts of scientific articles in the life sciences became less readable over time. Specifically, I sample 28,345 abstracts from 17 of the leading journals in the field of management and organization over 3 decades, and study two established indicators of readability over time, namely the Flesch Reading Ease and the New Dale–Chall Readability Formula. I find a modest trend towards less readable abstracts, which leads to an increase in articles that are extremely hard to read from 12% in the first decade of the sample to 16% in the final decade of the sample. I further find that an increasing number of authors partially explains this trend, as do the use of scientific jargon and corresponding author affiliations with institutions in English-speaking countries. I discuss implications for authors, reviewers, and editors in the field of management.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the readability and suitability of Spanish-language hearing aid user guides. Method Hearing aid user guides in English and Spanish were downloaded for analysis. Readability for the English guides was calculated using the Flesch Reading Ease Scale and the Flesch–Kincaid Readability Formula, and readability for the Spanish guides was calculated using the Fernandez–Huerta and Spaulding Formula and Fry Graph. The Suitability Assessment of Materials was used to rate the suitability of each Spanish and English pair of hearing aid user guides. Results Of the nine manufacturers that had materials available in English, only five had guides available in Spanish. Although readability for the Spanish and English user guides was similar, both guides were written, on average, at the eighth grade level. Suitability for the analyzed Spanish and English user guides was 78% and 80%, respectively. Conclusions Spanish-language hearing aid user guides were lacking in readability and suitability. Given that patients with limited proficiency in English, including the Hispanic population, are at risk for low health literacy, providers and manufacturers are encouraged to create more Spanish-language materials. User guides in both languages would benefit from revisions to improve readability and suitability. Supplemental Material https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.14569497

Simple measures often couldn’t count a deep complexity. In the case of semantic complexity of the text, conventional readability formulas share a common style, a common sort of achievements and a common borders of limitation: These formulas lack a semantics-aware approach and as a result, a precise measurement of semantic complexity couldn’t be done by them. In this paper, we introduce DASTEX, a novel semantics-aware complexity measure for semantic complexity of text. By DASTEX, a new layer of complexity analysis are opened for NLP, cognitive and computational tasks. This measure benefits from an intuitionistic underlying formal model which consider semantic as a lattice of intuitions. This yields to a well-defined definition for semantic of a text and its complexity. DASTEX is a practical analysis method upon this formal model. So a complete suite of idea, model and method are prepared to result in a simple but yet deep measure for semantic complexity of text. The evaluation of the proposed approach is done by a detailed example, a case study, a set of eighteen human-judgment experiments and a corpus-based evaluation. The results show that DASTEX is capable of measuring the semantic complexity of text. The Experiment-results demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms the random baseline in terms of better precision and accuracy.

O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar os determinantes da legibilidade das notas explicativas das companhias brasileiras abertas. Para isso realizou-se um estudo exploratório com abordagem quantitativa, obtido a partir das demonstrações financeiras padronizadas divulgadas anualmente pelas companhias integrantes do IBrX 50, no período compreendido entre 2010 e 2016. Para mensuração da legibilidade, recorreu-se à Flesch Readability Formula. Utilizou-se da regressão linear múltipla para análise dos dados. Os resultados destacam que as notas explicativas das empresas possuem baixa legibilidade e que as variáveis tamanho, complexidade operacional, tempo de listagem, governança corporativa, auditoria por uma big four e extensão do reporting são estatisticamente significativos para determinar a legibilidade das notas explicativas. A pesquisa contribui por destacar que mesmo empresas de grande porte, auditadas por empresas de renome em auditoria e com elevados níveis de governança carecem de maior zelo com a preparação e evidenciação da informação contábil, considerando a baixa legibilidade identificada na pesquisa. A verificação da baixa legibilidade das notas explicativas desperta para a importância de ações dos agentes reguladores e operadores da contabilidade que visem melhorias das informações entregues aos usuários.
