Although the so-called „Vienna school“ practised an universalist approach to history of arts, their prominent acters like Alois Riegel and Max Dvořák influenced the nationalist ideas among the Central European art historians in the interwar period. An evident example of such an influence is Croatian art historian Ljubo Karaman (1886‒1971) ‒ a Vienna student who studied the art relations between center and periphery from early 1930s on. His thoughts on this topic were collected in his 1963 book Problemi periferijske umjetnosti. O djelovanju domaće sredine u umjetnosti hrvatskih krajeva (Problems of Peripheral Art. On Influence of Local Surrounding on the Art of the Croatian Areas). Colonial character of the Karaman’s definition of the center/periphery relation is clear in his notion that the dissemination and assimilation of the artistic styles is always one-way: from developed center to the province. His definition of „peripheral art“ appeared as a reaction to the works of famous „Vienna school“ scholars from early 20th century (particularly Polish-Austrian art historian Strzygowski). It is based on the idea of external, political and artistic influences in Dalmatia as external forces of artistic exchange. A prominent writer and encyclopaedist Miroslav Krleža turned upside-down the idea of the artistic transfer from the advanced West toward underdeveloped East/Balkans as a periphery at the edge of civilisation. In his discussion on the Second Congress of writers in Zagreb he promoted the idea of the periphery as a true center. During 1950s, Krleža strongly influenced the formation of a new cultural paradigm, and forging of the new scientific paradigm within art history in Croatia. In her paper, the author explores how texts of the Croatian art-history scholars regarding ancient Dalmatian art were influenced by Karaman’s and Krleža’s ideas and concepts on peripheral, provincial, and border-line art.

The subject of this research is the stylistic peculiarities and means of artistic expression of the architectural majolica by Peter Kuzmich Vaulin. The object of this research is the architectural-artistic ceramics of P. K. Vaulin on the facades of Moscow buildings at the turn of the XIX – XX centuries as cultural heritage site. Detailed analysis is conducted on the Moscow period of P. K. Vaulin. The author determines the circle of artists who worked with the ceramist, analyzes the phenomenon of the Abramtsevo art club and its impact upon the professional becoming of P. K. Vaulin. Special attention is given to the workshop in Abramtsevo as a true center of art and a source for the development of the national romantic trend in decorative and applied art, as well as to the architectural landmarks of Moscow with majolica decor designed by P. K. Vaulin. The theoretical and methodological framework is comprised of the scientific works on the theory and history of art, aesthetics, psychology of art and philosophy. The compositional-artistic analysis, comparative-descriptive method, and imagery-stylistic analysis allowed studying the means of artistic expression of architectural ceramics, the compositional interaction of materials and space, as well as style and formative peculiarities of ceramics. The conclusion is made that direct practical participation of professional artists in the Russian decorative and applied art in the late XIX century considerably impacted the development of applied art, and drew attention of the world community, emphasizing its value within the system of visual art. The analysis of architectural compositions indicates that P. K. Vaulin was a co-author of the ceramic works created by the artists of the Abramtsevo (Mamontov’s) art club. The scientific novelty consists in comprehensive examination of the works of Moscow Period of P. K. Vaulin in the area of facade ceramics, as well as the imagery-stylistic and artistic analysis of the compositions of the master.

Performance in all sports requires good spatial attention. This study investigates the impact of long-term sports training on lateralization of visual spatial attention and also explores if the type of sport (foot orienteering (FootO) vs. judo) could be related to differentiated effects on the pattern of lateralization. Thirty practitioners of FootO (aged 16-58 years, Mean age = 24.96±10.98; 16 males), 30 judo wrestlers (aged 16-60 years, Mean age = 25.96±10.61; 19 males), and 30 subjects who have never practiced any sport (aged 15-53 years, Mean age = 33.2±11.56; 13 males), were studied with a line-bisection task. All participants were right-handed and the athletes had at least 5 years of active sport practicing. Although the mean transection in the three groups was to the left of the true center regardless of the hand used suggesting right pseudoneglect, the accuracy of both hands was highest in the group of practitioners of FootO and lowest in the non-athletes group. Also, there were no between-hands differences in the accuracy among practitioners of FootO (t(30) = 0.062, p = 0.951), slightly better right hand accuracy in judo wrestlers (t(30) = 0.608, p = 0.548), and significantly better right hand accuracy in non-athletes (t(30) = -2.297, p = 0.029). In general, the results suggest that the active long-term training of any sport may affects functional brain organization of visual spatial attention towards its more balanced hemispheric presentation, but the type of sport is of great importance for the magnitude of the induced changes.

Eighty-eight Bulgarian children (range 5 – 7 years old), 40 left handers (18 boys) and 48 right handers (26 boys), completed line-bisection test one time with each hand. In accordance with previous studies the results show that the majority of children demonstrated deviation to the left of the true center with the left hand and to the right with the right hand, suggesting symmetrical neglect. Sex, handedness and their interaction had no main effect on mean percentage deviation scores at the group level, but only sex had a significant impact on the frequency of symmetrical neglect (p < .05), with higher one in girls than in boys.

AbstractObjectives: There is increasing evidence of non-motor, sensory symptoms, mainly involving the spatial domain, in cervical dystonia (CD). These manifestations are likely driven by dysfunctional overactivity of the parietal cortex during the execution of a sensory task. Few studies also suggest the possibility that visuospatial attention might be specifically affected in patients with CD. Therefore, we asked whether non-motor manifestations in CD might also comprise impairment of higher level visuospatial processing. Methods: To this end, we investigated visuospatial attention in 23 CD patients and 12 matched healthy controls (for age, gender, education, and ocular dominance). The patients were identified according to the dystonia pattern type (laterocollis vs. torticollis). Overall, participants were right-handers, and the majority of them was right-eye dominant. Visuospatial attention was assessed using a line bisection task. Participants were asked to bisect horizontal lines, using their right or left hand. Results: Participants bisected more to the left of true center when using their left hand to perform the task than when using their right hand. However, overall, torticollis patients produced a significantly greater leftward deviation than controls. Conclusions: These data are consistent with preliminary findings suggesting the presence of biased spatial attention in patients with idiopathic cervical dystonia. The presence of an attentional bias in patients with torticollis seem to indicate that alterations of attentional circuits might be implicated in the pathophysiology of this type of CD. The paper argues that Kant’s teleology in Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Purpose can be salvaged only if the mechanism of social unsociability, considered as the true center of the essay, is a) detached from the ? by contemporary standards ? hardly defensible notion of ‘natural dispositions’ and b) understood in conjunction with general premises that Kant does not make explicit, but rather takes as self-evidently true. In this perspective, Kant’s teleology is reduced to the affirmationthat, given certain constant features of human beings (mainly, limited benevolence and ability to see their best interest through experience) as well as relatively constant objective circumstances of the world we live in (mainly, availability of finite yet sufficient resources and sustainable growth in a competitive yet peaceful system), an approximation of human affairs towards the ‘cosmopolitan constitution’ is the most likely outcome. The paper moves the first steps towards a defense of this thesis by reformulating Kant’s argument in a way to make it compatible with contemporary science.

Total hip arthoplasty or hip replacement is today a common and highly successful a surgical procedure. However, in the revision artoplasty the procedure is more complicated, as standard devices have to be adapted to different shapes of acetabular defects, which are patient specific especially when they are bigger and wider spread. This kind of big defects, sever acetabular defects, pelvic discontinuity, defects resulted from tumor problems, protrusion, can usually be addressed with a standard Burch-Schneider Antiprotrusio Cage or a Mueller Ring in order to restore the mechanics and the true center of the hip. This paper proposes a design process and manufacturing preparation for a patient specific acetabular cage. The design is intended to fix problems that standard cages sometimes do not resolve, for example insufficient fixation due to the fact that the inferior flange did not engage the ischium, problems of bone graft resorption and in the same time tries to remain an affordable solution. The design process uses as input information the 3D reconstruction of the patient hip from CT scan. Important parameters like the position of the true center of rotation, acetabular anteversion and inclination are determined and calculated. Other parameters, such as number of fixing screws and their designated holes or the amount of bone to be covered with the custom acetabular cage (fixation surface), are proposed by orthopaedic specialist. The design methodology relays on commercial software, such as Solid Works for CAD, 3D Doctor for 3D bone reconstruction from the CT scans or other software for different file transformations. The model was optimized to be produced through direct metal laser-sintering (DMLS). Regarding the results, the particular implant was designed and optimized for fabrication and it is available to be produced. During the design process, although a systematized process was undertaken and implemented, some activities could not be done in systematic, repeatable way. Nevertheless, a design process strategy was established, so that the design would match the requirements of such implant and also a requirements list for the type and form of information needed for this kind of design. Also, we concluded that using software to automate some of the operations that were done manually by the operator would help decrees the design time and improve the repeatability of the process.

Crossover refers to a pattern of performance on the line bisection test in which short lines are bisected on the side opposite the true center of long lines. Although most patients with spatial neglect demonstrate crossover, contemporary theories of neglect cannot explain it. In contrast, we show that blending the psychophysical construct of magnitude estimation with neglect theory not only explains crossover, but also addresses a quantitative feature of neglect that is independent of spatial deficits. We report a prospective validation study of the orientation/estimation hypothesis of crossover. Forty subjects (17 patients with and without neglect following unilateral brain injury and 23 normal controls) completed four experiments that examined crossover using line bisection, line bisection with cueing, and reproducing line lengths from both memory and a standard. Replicating earlier findings, all except one subject group exhibited crossover on the standard line bisection test, all groups showed a spontaneous preference to orient attention to one end of the lines, and all groups overestimated the length of short lines and underestimated long lines. Biases in attentional orientation and magnitude estimation are exaggerated in patients with neglect. The truly novel finding of this study occurred when, after removing the line from the bisection task, the direction of crossover was completely reversed in all subject groups depending on where attention was oriented. These findings are consistent with our hypothesis of crossover: (1) crossover is a normal component of performance on line bisection; (2) crossover results from the interplay of biases in attentional orientation and magnitude estimation; and (3) attentional orientation predicts the direction of crossover, whereas a disorder of magnitude estimation, not previously emphasized in neglect, accounts for the quantitative changes in length estimation that make crossover more obvious in neglect subjects. Paradoxically, we observed that the traditional line bisection test is suboptimal for exploring crossover because lines elicit spontaneous orientation responses from subjects that confound experimental manipulations of attention. We conclude that attentional orientation and magnitude estimation are necessary and sufficient to explain crossover and that bias in magnitude estimation is a core component of neglect.
