The prototype of UTHM C-Drone use a coaxial hexacopter concept for its propulsion system. A coaxial rotor consists of two motor and two propellers mounted above each other and aligned in relation to their axis of rotation. The propellers are based on the T-Motor U15XXL KV29 model used in UTHM C-Drone. The distance between the two propellers is usually relative to the radius of the propeller or can be lesser. The objectives for this study are to investigate the effect of distance between upper and lower propeller in a coaxial rotors system and the effect of rotational speed. This study is important to ensure the C-Drone power efficient and capable to lift 180 kg payload. The CAD model of the propeller and coaxial rotors system were designed based on the specification from T-Motor company by Solidworks software and the flow simulations were conducted using Solidworks Flow Simulation module. The total of six CAD models; one for a single propeller and five for coaxial rotors with five difference of distance cases were constructed. For each model, the total thrust was tested from 50% throttle power up to the 90% throttle power. It was found that the coaxial rotors system can generate more thrust than a single propeller but less than double. It was also found that if the lower propeller rotates faster than the upper propeller, the increment of total thrust is very small. However, if the upper propeller rotates faster than the lower propeller, the total thrust increase significantly. For the case of faster upper propeller, as the higher the throttle applied, the thrust increment ratio will decrease, and the efficiency of the thrust produced will be affected. In addition, for same rotation speed, the thrust generated was lesser when both propellers rotate in a same direction compared to when each propeller rotates in the opposite directions of each other.

The present work uses the method of Blade Element Momentum Theory as suggested by Hansen. The method applied to three blade models adopted from Rahgozar S. with the airfoil data used the data provided by Wood D. The wind turbine performance described in term of the thrust coefficient C_T, torque coefficient C_Q and the power coefficient C_p . These three coefficient can be deduced from the Momentum theory or from the Blade element Theory(BET). The present work found the performance coefficient derived from the Momentum theory tent to over estimate. It is suggested to used the BET formulation in presenting these three coefficients. In overall the Blade Element Momentum Theory follows the step by step as described by Hansen work well for these three blade models. However a little adjustment on the blade data is needed. This research focuses on developing an automatic flight control system for a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) using a software-in-the-loop method in which the PID controller is implemented in National Instruments LabVIEW software and the flight dynamics of the fixed-wing UAV are simulated using the X-Plane flight simulator. The fixed-wing UAV model is created using the Plane Maker software and is based on existing geometry and propulsion data from the literature. Gain tuning for the PID controller is accomplished using the pole placement technique. In this approach, the controller gain can be calculated using the dynamic parameters in the transfer function model and the desired characteristic equation. The proposed controller designs' performance is validated using attitude, altitude, and velocity hold simulations. The results demonstrate that the technique can be an effective tool for researchers to validate their UAV control algorithms by utilising the realistic UAV or manned aircraft models available in the X-Plane flight simulator.

Achieving a reliable obstacle detection and avoidance system that can provide an effective safe avoidance path for small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is very challenging due to its physical size and weight constraints. Prior works tend to employ the vision based-sensor as the main detection sensor but resulting to high dependency on texture appearance while not having a distance sensing capabilities. The previous system only focused on the detection of the static frontal obstacle without observing the environment which may have moving obstacles. On the other hand, most of the wide spectrum range sensors are heavy and expensive hence not suitable for small UAV. In this work, integration of different based sensors was proposed for a small UAV in detecting unpredictable obstacle appearance situation. The detection of the obstacle is accomplished by analysing the flow field vectors in the image frames sequence. The proposed system was evaluated by conducting the experiments in a real environment which consisted of different configuration of the obstacles. The results from the experiment show that the success rate for detecting unpredictable obstacle appearance is high which is 70% and above. Even though some of the introduced obstacles are considered to have poor texture appearances on their surface, the proposed obstacle detection system was still able to detect the correct appearance movement of the obstacles by detecting the edges.

The existence of the new bell-shaped span-load wing is said to has the best lift distribution especially comparing to the elliptical wing. Bell-shaped span-load wing is designed by configuring the twist of the wing. However, the information on the aerodynamic and stability characteristics of the bell-shaped span-load wing is limited. Thus, the main purpose of the research is to evaluate the aerodynamic and stability characteristic to strengthen the claim of the capability of bell-shaped span-load wing in producing minimum induced drag. As the research is expected to be beneficial to the aviation design team, detailed information regarding the lift distribution as well as the induced drag produced is analysed at the optimum angle of attack and the results is further explained in this research. The numerical method for the analysis is done by using Lifting Line Theory (LLT) in the XFLR5 software which can analyse the wings of aircraft in terms of its aerodynamic and stability characteristic. Then, the comparison of the aerodynamic characteristics for bell-shaped span-load, elliptical span-load and tapered wing done in this research is to strengthen the appeal made stating that the bell-shaped span-load wing is the best type of wing ever existed and may replace the elliptical wing as the best wing shape with aerodynamically most efficient. The research has proven that along the wingspan, the bell-shaped span-load wing produced the lowest and minimum induced drag when being compared. At the optimum angle of attack of bell-shaped span-load wing, though the lift produced is slightly lower than the elliptical and tapered wing, the difference in the induced drag is obvious as bell-shaped span-load wing produces induced drag that is lower than 0. In other words, starting from the semi span of the wing to the wingtip, the bell-shaped span-load wing managed to be the most aerodynamically efficient wing.

It can be challenging to develop a controller using conventional techniques for a plant with a linear or nonlinear dynamical system or model uncertainty. Model adaptive control is a new alternative to classical control techniques and a simple way to update controller parameters. Because model reference adaptive control is unable to anticipate the state in real time if the state observer is not designed with, we will review some of the most major disadvantages of the most commonly used design techniques without state observer in this work.

The rapid growth of aviation industry resulted in a growing pilot demand globally from year to year. The increasing rate of pilot employed triggers all airliners to meet the needs of the organization that affect job satisfaction. Now, much attention has been given to the issue regarding quality of work life as flight crew by the management in the aviation sector as it is pertains to employee behaviour. Job satisfaction of flight crew describe on how well the job provides fulfilment and it serves as a source or means of enjoyment to every flight crew. Job satisfaction is important as it represent the degree to which flight crew feel positively or negatively about their job. There are many studies conducted to show the level of working satisfaction. However, not many studies have clearly demonstrated and discussed the quality of work life as a flight crew working in aviation industry. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the quality of work life as a flight crew working in aviation industry. All data from books, journal and articles were analysed. The result revealed that the job meaningfulness factor has the greatest impact on job satisfaction among flight crew working with commercial airlines in aviation industry. On the other hand, the lowest satisfied aspect among flight crew is related to reward and fairness aspect.
