Objective: Diabetes Mellitus is a leading illness to the society and despite of a lot of researches, not a single cure has been discovered. Most of the time, people focused on fighting diabetes and medicinal plants were utilized. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of Scarlet Spiral Flag (Costus woodsonii) and to be reviewed for preclinical trials.

Methods: 20 male Swiss mice were made diabetic by inducing Alloxan monohydrate. Then separated randomly into 4 groups with different treatments administered daily for 7 days; Control, Positive Control (600 µg/kg Glibenclamide), T1 (250mg/kg Scarlet Spiral Flag ethanolic extract) and T2 (500mg/kg Scarlet Spiral Flag ethanolic extract). Their blood sugar was monitored onset after 1st treatment (6th, 12th and 24th hours) and during the week within the 1st, 4th and 8th day.

Results: Both the onset and fasting blood sugar monitoring showed a significant decrease in the mean average blood glucose level of the mice.

Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of Scarlet Spiral Flag (Costus woodsonii) has a potent antidiabetic effect in Alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Since it is under the same Genus of the Insulin plant, it has a common effect in terms of lowering the blood glucose level.

Keywords: Acclimatization, Alloxan, Costus woodsonii, Ethanolic Extract, Oral Gavage

Objective: ST elevation myocardial infarction is the most common myocardial infarction cases. The main intervention of this case is primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). After PPCI, quality of life in STEMI patients depend on their ability to control the risk factors of reinfarction. In this condition, patients need family support. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the relationship between family support and quality of patients’ life after PPCI.

Methods: This was a descriptive study with cross sectional design. We recruited a purposive sample of 34 STEMI post- Primary PCI patients. We employed the modified family support questionnaire (Hensarling Diabetes Family Support Scale) and the quality of life questionnaire to collect data. Data, then, were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses.

Results: The mean score of the family support was 64.44, with the minimum score of 21 and maximum score of 75. More patients received good family support than those who received poor family support. On the other hand, the mean score of patients’ life quality was 68.36, ranging from 25.1-98.43. There was a weak and positive correlation between family support and quality of patients’ life. However, the relationship was insignificant.

Conclusion: Family support was not significantly related to quality of STEMI patients’ life. Further studies to identify factors contributing to the quality of STEI patients’ life are needed.

Key words: family support, percutaneous coronary intervention, quality of life, ST elevation myocardial infarction

The purpose of this study was to identify the association between caring nurses’ behaviors and respondent characteristics with adherence to hemodialysis therapy management in end- stage renal disease patients.

Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design with a cross sectional approach. A purposive sample of 97 ESRD patients on hemodialysis were involved in this study. data were collected using questionnaire to identify patients’ characteristics, perception on nurses caring behaviors, and compliance on hemodialysis therapy management. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses.

Results: Over half of the patients were adherent to hemodialysis therapy management (50.5%) and perceived that nurses have caring behaviors (54.6%).
