Student orientation programs can enhance new student self-esteem, which is in turn a significant positive predictor of personal, social, and academic achievement (Hickman, Bartholomae, & McKenry, 2000). Furthermore, these programs can help students develop the basic technical skills they will need to be active learners. According to Dixson (2010), research into effective online instruction supports the argument that “online instruction can be as effective as traditional instruction, [and] to do so, online courses need cooperative/collaborative (active) learning, and strong instructor presence.” Likewise, online orientation programs for new students must provide opportunities for active engagement and strong facilitator presence to be effective. This chapter presents a case study that describes the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of the online orientation modules for new students at a Canadian postsecondary institution that offers primarily blended and online programs.

In Summer 2009, a new model for student orientation was proposed and deployed as a pilot program at the Cascade Camus of Portland Community College. Traditional orientation models such as in-person sessions and online presentations had nto be fully effective in meeting the needs of new students coming to Cascade. The Student Training, Advising, Registration, and Troubleshooting (START) Lab sought to reconcile these problems by merging the best aspects of the in-person and online orientation models in order to provide a more comprehensive and flexible orientation experience. This article describes the START Lab pilot program and presents evidence from literature and research to support the model. Current and future assessment protocols are discussed and initial impressions of the pilot program shared. Lastly, suggestions for future development are considered.

Online orientation programs are a growing trend for delivery of information to new students within higher education. Considering the widespread use of Internet and technology and the increased personal and work demands on many students, higher education institutions need to investigate how orientation programs can potentially be delivered in an online format. A new framework should be explored to make this information more accessible to those students who are unable to attend the more traditional programs on campus, and to continue communicating with students throughout their transitional year. This article explores the concept of online orientation programs for students who physically attend at least one course on a postsecondary campus. The article also reviews some current programs and literature and provides recommendations for campuses looking to enhance this delivery option.

Students new to distance education need to be prepared for learning in a fully online environment. While many undergraduate and graduate programs offer face-to-face orientation sessions to welcome new students and introduce them to general requirements, the sessions are often short, optional, and focus mainly on policies and procedures. Students entering a fully online degree program have a unique set of questions and concerns, including hardware/software requirements, building relationships with their professors, and creating a sense of community among their peers.  In order to address the needs of their distance-learning students, the Education Leadership program designed a five-day interactive orientation on Blackboard for new online cohorts. This orientation module not only cultivates creative and reflective learners, but also utilizes technology-enhanced tools and strategies to establish a cohesive learning community. The orientation includes daily components such as community building activities and opportunities to practice using Blackboard features, as well as a summative, guided reflection. The EDLE online orientation was offered in 2015/2016 for two cohorts totaling 44 students. An overwhelming majority reported feeling more prepared to begin the program, comfortable with using the required technology, and engaged with their colleagues and professors. More importantly, evidence shows that students in 2015/2016 who participated in the orientation performed better in group activities and demonstrated high levels of engagement in their courses, compared to students in 2014 who did not have access to the orientation. Faculty attending this session will learn how to design an effective and innovative orientation module for an entire program or how to use the techniques illustrated in a single course setting.

This research was conducted by using a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach was chosen to be tested theories by examining and measuring variables in the form of relationships, differences, influences, contributions, and the others. The research was carried out by describing the students acquisition data on the new student admission (PPDB) using zoning system based on the academic year 2019-2020 and the student acquisition data on the academic year PPDB 2018-2019 as a comparison. Based on the results of the study, the new students of PPDB using zoning system was considered lower in terms of economic and educational background of parents. There were more parents with less education (elementary & junior high school) in the zoning system than in the rayon system, whereas parents with higher education in the zoning system were fewer than the rayon system.  Likewise, in terms of income, there were more people with the low income in the zoning system than in the rayon system, and those having high income were fewer than in the rayon system. The study showed that the intelligence and the result of National Examination Score (NUN) in the zoning system is lower than in the rayon system. The intelligent level of the students in the zoning system is mostly dominated by the scores under 90-109, while in the rayon system were dominated by the scores above 90-109.  The National Examination Scores (NUN) in the zoning system were evenly distributed from a range of scores 0 to 30, while in the rayon system the scores were dominated by a range of scores 28-30, with the lowest score 24.

This research is intended to predict the possibility of new students time to complete studies using data mining analysis to explore the history stack data using K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm (KNN). Applications generated in this study will use a variety of attributes in a data mining classified among other Ujian Nasional scores (UN), the origin of the school / area, gender, occupation and income of parents, number of siblings, and others that by applying the analysis KNN can do a prediction based on historical proximity of existing data with new data, whether the student is likely to complete the study on time or not. From the test results by applying the KNN algorithm and uses sample data alumnus graduation year 2004 s.d 2010 for the case of a long and alumni data graduation year 2011 for new cases obtained accuracy rate of 83.36%.
